counterweighted cranks...where from and how much?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/45539/counterweighted-crankswhere-from-and-how-much

pete wood ·

I know y'all gonna tell me to ring a shop but I don't like wasting people's time when you guys might know anyway.

Where can I get a counterweighted 69mm (stock VW) crank from?

I was imagining people do them exchange. Stan Pobjoy does doesn't he?

And of course, what's the damage? I mean the cost?

I'd like to rebuild a motor of mine to be highly balanced but I wonder if it will be worth he cost.

Bizarre ·

$150 - $200 US from Demello or ACnet or CB or.................
Craig Torrens wrote:Pobjoy sells his for $770.........these are crack tested standard cranks, counterweighted, ground, and nitrited.

I bought a 10thou one with flywheel with heads and 90.5P&C for $400 a little while back

There are some answers for you.

vw54 ·

I bought a Demello 69mm +10 cut for USD 160 but carried it back in my luggage last June

Try some of the shops they may have some good deals but dont buy anything other than CB, Demello or Bergs

Or Pobjoy.

VDubya ·

Get a forged full circle. Welded would be your second choice.

what does "+ 10 cut" mean?

Craig, love to buy a pobjoy, but I like to avoid selling my first born. Know what I mean? I know what you're gonna say...you get what you pay for.

Is there anyone else in Aust who does them besides Stan? Because to be honest, he makes the Berg stuff look affordable.

Bizarre ·

"+ 10 cut"

Pete this means first grind on the mains by 10 thou "

When even a crispy new crank is welded it will distort a bit and is ground to true it up again.

Cranks usually go 0, 10 thou and 20 thou.

You can go to 30 thou on a stocker but after that you will have difficulty getting bearings for it.

pete wood ·

so I have to have it ground after I buy it?

or do I use +10 thou bearing on it straight out of the box?

BTW, I take back what I said about Stan, he's exy, but the Berg stuff makes him look affordable...I just looked at the Berg price list. ❗😢

Bizarre ·

No - it comes useable fron the shop

When they sell it to you they tell you what it was ground to

http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=ECR0001&cartid=1028200573415620

"the least amount of crank journal cut will be provided, dependant on core availability"

That is why it is good to give your own core.
Bugger shipping it over and then shipping it back.

IF you can find a trustworthy person in the states get then to find a good std crank and use that as the core??

Here is the Demello site

http://www.demellocranks.com/

They have 6 circle cranks

Vdubya - have you ever used a full circle crank??

Bizarre ·

DPR is also another brand that gets :thumb fron the Shop talk boys

66deluxe ·

Hi all, I just got a 78.4mm counterweighted type 4 crank from the states, was $480US. It is a DPR Crank, I wasn't scared to pay that much, but exchange rate and shipping kills you though. But i have it now so here comes a big type 4 engine build.

Did you look at a forged Berg or a welded one? There is more to consider than price.

Make sure you don't compare apples to lemons.

Hey, it's your money - it makes no difference to me if you want to send it overseas.

But if I was Stan, I'd be very pissed off that some jerk has labelled his cranks 'lemons' without stating why

You over sensitive over reading little blouse. That is a common phrase. Put two forged cranks together and compare apples not compare a forged and a welded crank.

Are you trying to tell people that a welded crank is as good as a forged one? Wake up mornon and pull your wedgie out.

VWCOOL ·

WTF?

Louis - is that Vdubya by another name?? These posts seem to have the same 'Sad Old Man' tone...

I take offence to being called a 'blouse' and a 'moron' for simply pointing out that a post could be considered defamatory or whatever

I'd love to buy a crank off any of the afore mentioned companies. I am realiably lead to believe they all offer quality products, especially those of Stan Pobjoy and and Gene Berg Enterprises. Sadly I cannot afford the cost of the latter so I will have to make do with a cheaper product.

There,

Enough said, discussion over. 👍

VDUBXTC ·

edited this post, cause i don't want any trouble. 😀

wasn't happy with this brand
