Have seen heaps of reference to this particularly relating to old busses - I have also seen the old PMG access covers on the street, so i assume its water or elec related, but i would like to know what the acronym stands for

Cheers

I think it stands for Postmaster General...

ahhh makes sense!!
That would be the reason theres so many of them - would probably account for the oxide red colour too!?

But why would the little concrete covers (approx. 350 x 200) on the footpath have PMG on them?

cheers!!

because Post Master General was initially responsible for communications, which of course was mail, then telegrams & mail, & then telephones, so the PMG plates you see on footpath were for phone lines

Bizarre ·

pre Telecom days when the post office also handled the telephones.

The old switch was run from there. You know where people rand and you pulled the wire and plugged it into the person you wanted.
My old man use to run a few.

We use to own/run the one at Hoxton Park and East Gosford.

Mate.... it was in my lifetime that you had to book a phone call if you wanted to call overseas at Christmas.

my how times have changed :jesus

There was a typical Australianism to refer to the PMG as "Public Money Grabbers". Just thought you'd all like to know that. Ok so you didn't. I'm sorry all right?

and we used to have the SEC over here, which stood for State Energy Commission, but was commonly refered to as Slack, Easy Comfortable, coz once you started working for them, life got real easy...👍
