I'm wanting to replace the generator in my '70 Auto Beetle with an alternator, preferably a 75 amp one. I'll need the whole kit, so who/where is the best place to get a new one for a good price? I'm in Melb, but don't mind paying postage if it's from interstate as I'm happy to shop around for the best $$. I had a reply from Mick Motors, and am waiting on Classic VeeDub. Anyone else?
Also, would anyone have a suggestion as to why my Bug wants to stall sometimes when stopped at lights but in gear? It's fine when idling in neutral.
Thanx! :P

I'm after one too if that helps? Might be able to get a discount for a group buy or something?

Have had a few replies from places...
Custom Vee Dub only have 55 amp.... same with Mick Motors. Am still waiting to hear from KdF Werks.
Are 75 amp kits really that hard to come by? 🥲

I bought mine from overseas (CIP1) as a kit. Can't remember how much I paid though but it would be on their website.

Umm... yes? 😉
I think the more amps the merrier. I'd love to be able to sit at lights in the rain, with my headlights on, stereo blaring, wipers on full, and nothing slows down or dies on me!
And I was under the impression that Stickshift Autos use more current than normal beetles as the gears are like a switch or something..... drawing current. I'm not 100% on how the Auto's work, but this was the gist I got... I'd love to see one pulled apart and get the lowdown, as long as it's not mine that's pulled apart! :P
So yeah, would love a 75 amp alternator as opposed to 50 amp.
jakjones ·
50 amps is plenty 4 most things . ie not a compressor 4 air bags but other than that its more than nough
barls ·
i use to run my lights, stereo, gauges and twin bilge blowers for my heater and had no problems on a generator. ive gone to a 50 amp alternator mainly cause one came up for the right $$$$
barls ·
also bear in mind that the 75 amp version requires a couple of heavy duty cables to be run so you dont fry the original wires. these cables some times come separate so it can make a difference in price

You're a wealth of info Barls, thanx!
Am checking out for 75 amp ones.... but so far no luck. Maybe it'll have to be 50 afterall.... 🥲
