....the final high fill...might look boring, but the amount of new metal and body work to get it this far.....scary...

looking good whats the exterier colour going to be

HGFS ·

Na its not boring, I reckon its kinda exciting seeing a shell at this stage, the anticipation of how damn good its gonna look in that top coat. I cant wait till my Oval is at this point, I've got all the scary metal replacement still ahead of me.

Looks nice, interesting colour suits the year well I think. Love those retro sorts of colours, what is it? Should look the goods when the outside is done.

looking good crewcab i love looking at progress pics,is that turkis green?

rob

crewcabconnection ·

nope it is pretty close to Pampas Green, but a bit more candy...Wals bus is Turkis...the whole thing is gonna be the same colour. 65Busser is doing most of the trim in light grey...trying to avoid black, apart from the BRMs....it's an anti-bling thing...starting a new trend...ein Bus, eine Farbe.

crewcabconnection ·

well the outside got painted....the rest of the pics are on the DSK thread for the bus. Looking good, should be finished by the end of the week...the colour is very candy-sweet....all I gotta do know if figure out how the hell all the mechanicals and electrical crap works...I got all the bits, just gotta get a clue. LOL.

pete wood ·

did you end up buying that turbo motor for it or are you gonna stick with the stocker for now?

BTW, who's doing your paint? looks sweet 🙂

crewcabconnection ·

stocker for now ... heres a few more pics today. I'm yet to see it in the daylight ...Thanks to Kimm at Indian for the pics. Gotta modify the spring plate adjusters to accommodate the BRMS and rubber, which is why its still got those shite rims on it ... still at least it's got doors now...

No to the turbo, spoke to Dave B and KG, the work that had gone into it would have been wasted to a large extent, as it would need major mods to get in the splitter...better for a bug - and it was a great price ay....so sticking with the 1600TP and the Lbug box for now, should be okay for now....he said, sulking over not having a Sube motor like Pete.

Dasdubber ·

Superb - I think the drop sills blend in effortlessly. Nice work - what wheels will you be running (or is that secret?)?

crewcabconnection ·

Dasdubber wrote:Superb - I think the drop sills blend in effortlessly. Nice work - what wheels will you be running (or is that secret?)?
Got some black BRMs ... but need to modify the adjustable spring plates to get enough travel to to get them into the back end...hense the old rims. I had to go with 205/65R15s to get the load rating I need on the back. Long story, but basically more mods needed on the suspension.

The back is Indian bolt in IRS with their adjustable front beam etc., so there's a bit of work still to do to get it right.

Hanging out for that photo....

ColumBUS ·

panelvans are the sex... who needs 23 windows anyway???

GoLfMan ·

that looks awesome

nbturbo ·

Panel Vans do it for me as well-and that is a very NICE one.

crewcabconnection ·

thanks. Will update more pics when further progress is made, right now it's back at Indian for more work ... hopefully in the vrrrroooooooooommmm department, I knew that VR6 motor would fit.

BenettonVW ·

Crew.. Thanks for the pics. I have a 67 Panel, and needless to say, pics like this inspire me.

But I have noticed something on yours, that isn't on mine. You have an extra set of vents to me. I only have upper vents, where as on the opposite side to your petrol filler,(LHS), has extra vents, being the lower set.

Any reason? Or do you not know why this is the case either?

65busser ·

Aren't the vents a 67 thing?

crewcabconnection ·

Muller thinks that this might in fact be as late as 68...Australian Panels in 67 Had two sets of venys as 65Busser sez. Above and below. The ones above are plated off, but force air down. They are also inverted as compaired with a windowed van...Steve sez it's rare as, I've been trolling 'the samba' and can find out squat. They are the same both sides...look cool...but they we're rough as guts...took weeks to straighten...and they are damn sharp, so work stopped a lot due to loss of blood....

Australian one ...

Yankee one - and I liked this bus! it's earlier though and I think Mango Green

and a Yankee 67 - but someone modded the rear vent...but you can see what most of them look like...

BenettonVW ·

Hmm.. Well, without taking over the thread, I just took a pic of the panel, and I am leaning towards it being a 66 then..
What do you think?

_dmb_ ·

it's a 67 , 66s had the vents above the waistline but without the solid part in the middle. all "double vents" buses are 67
it is an australian and south african only thing.
but.....
a small number of 67s had double and a half vents like ccc's

crewcabconnection ·

thanks Mr Dog. Why have windows when you can have vents.

BenettonVW ·

Thought so, but thanks for the clarification. Don't spose it matter as long as it is in the driveway.. 😉

Anyway, nice bus CCC, wicked man.

Southern Van ·

Thats one nice panel crewcab. As you can see I like panels

Southern Van ·

kroozzn63 ·

crewcab man that is so sexy "i need a paint job "
got any paint left, it will match mine perfect , r u putting signage on it if so got anything done yet?

[ Edited on 11-12-2005 by kroozzn62 ]

crewcabconnection ·

there will be some signs ... maybe ... the problem is that I liked this bus so much that I'm not sure if signs would spoil it. I didn't dare go as dark a paint job as this one mind ... yeah paint left over ... which is good as there will be things to touch up as it goes back together.

lobus ·

Dean, I reckon you are on the right track not worrying about the bling, this baby is so straight you don't need the distraction.
The ride height looks perfect and the sills are likewise. You are gunna have a driveway that is the envy of many I promise. The hardest thing to do will be make up your mind which one to to drive.Maybe you will have to use a roster.
Hard work but someone has to do it eh?

[ Edited on 12-12-2005 by lobus ]

Skywalker ·

Dean

Who are you getting to do the paint for you?

Cheers

Anirok ·

ooooo i love the safari windows
nice touch

crewcabconnection ·

I used this place in Mt, Druitt, same as T2 to paint it. Not a 'flash' joint, but value for money. I had no real facilities for 2pac at home.

No safaris for me. I think they look great etc., but gotta leave something to do later...maybe...got more important toys to work on before that.

This week has seen the brake system replaced from rubber bits, to hoses, to cylinders, to master cylinders to machining the drums up - think the backing plate is original ...lol...modified the adjuatable spring plates and drop plates to accommodate the rims. Nothing much to see, but given this old bus aint been on the road in a good 15 years, everything needs doing pretty much ... still great progress being made. Might see the motor in and CVs by Xmas, but unlikelyt to be finished for a while yet.....due to the added work needed to get the mechanicals upto sctratch for the various engineers.

Will post pics as and when something is worth looking at.....

DubCrazy ·

hey fella, you still planing the airbrush work??? shes starting to look the dogs now..... well done on a bloody nice job so far

steff...................

crewcabconnection ·

Year Stef, just figured 2Pac is the go, and getting it done in a booth was gonna be less hassle.

Definately going to airbrush it....too big a canvas not too.

DubCrazy ·

bloody fantastic!!!! cant wait to see the final art to go on the old girl...

:P:P:P:P

steff.......................

tinman ·

Mate that's a seriously nice bus. Love that colour! It's very similar to the colour I'd do in a bus, if I had one that is. 🙂

58SPLIT ·

Wal, looking good.!
Cant wait till mine is at that stage. Will come up for visist soon to check it out.May have to hit Hopkins up for quote to paint mine before they go touring around the country side...

Cheers Derek...

crewcabconnection ·

No, not Wa,l Derek, but you're welcome to visit anyway.

+++Christmas Update+++

Well it's not home for Xmas ... had to get the spring plates modified to accommodate what I'm doing, so it all had to get pulled apart again. The brakes are all now done, I think that the only original bit in there is the backing plate now. New wheel cylinders, recond drums, new linings, cables etc., new rubber bits ... I said yes to having fries ... the master cylinder is now Bay. So kinda took longer than planned, but then the system has not be used in over 15 years, so was seriously crap.

The motor and internal goodies need to go in the back end before the height can be set up properly, so right now it's up in the air. It should come down a couple of inches all round.

I've gone with higher rated rubber for a bunch of reasons that is too dull to go into.

The new year will see the new rubbers and bling go on, then back home for the interior fit out.

+++my new year resolution - never to attempt to guess a finish date or cost for any future project++

Ho, Ho, Ho, thanks for looking.

SORRY DUDE I THOUGHT YOU WERE FROM UP THIS WAY...

nbturbo ·

SO nice-and so straight.Perfection on wheels.

pete wood ·

looking great Deano. The BRMs rock 👍

lobus ·

Those fantastic pics have got me all sentimental, it seems like yesterday that I had my bus parked in exactly the smae spot. Except it was August 2002. Time flies when you are having fun, so you have plenty to look forward to.
That yard must have seen so many of these restos by now eh?
It is close to VW sacred ground by my reckoning
In this pic, all the lowering gear is in there but I had 215/65/14 tyres so I couldn't drop her down till I cannibalised my Caravelle for it's wheels and tyres..DOH!

me I think Kimm is a legend, never had cause to doubt in over 10 years ... this one's no exception ... his ideas and 'reality' checks have been fantastic all along. But if sing people's praises then in come the knockers, so let leave it at - being ded happy.

It's hard to imagine just how bad this panel was when it got started ... but shows just about anything is do-able....

I second all of that. In the words of Bill and Ted, Kimm is a "most righteous dude".

lobus ·

you'r right..."ded" happy

crewcabconnection ·

Look like I'm about a couple of weeks away for getting the Panel home...

The rubbers (buy from Andy!) are all in now. The locks and mechanisms are in, the parcel tray is back in black. The guages are in. The mirrors are on - despite the passenger hinge being a total pain.

The best bit - though I guess people won't notice - is the fit of the doors and the overall line. Came up way better than expected, really happy with the fit. Now the black bits are going on, its looking better all the time. Apart from the secondhand motor, don't reckon there's much on the bus that hasn't been replaced with new ... amazing how money dissapears on things no one sees ... anyway....took a few more shots on the hoist for 'the historical record' ... tommorrow gonna fit the new steering wheel, finish the indicators and test fit the first of the LCD screens in the dash ...

kombibob ·

look'n good
man i love that colour:thumb

crewcabconnection ·

slightly better colour than my microbus for sure ... the front winda rubbers used to be on your bus...lol...

pete wood ·

very very nice 👍

but what's that scabby old matt black crew cab doing in the back ground? 😁

pete wood ·

When's Euro day?

No Forester. Ordered the Pug 307 HDi yesterday. 3K cheaper and 130litres more boot. Let's not even talk about the fule bill. 👍

tinman ·

Mate the bus is looking awesome. There's probably no limit to how much you can't wait to see the bus complete, I know I'm hanging to see the finished product.
Hope to see it in the flesh (metal) one day.

crewcabconnection ·

Peugeot? Mon Dieu! - Euroday is next Sunday, Newcastle. Did you get ordained last week Pete at the big doo?

kroozzn63 ·

man look at all that beautiful solid paint im drooooling :cry im being drawn away from the rat look

crewcabconnection ·

Blame Darren, I was happy just to have a panel finally ... then I saw Darrens ... look on the bright side, you can actually drive yours, all I do is throw money at mine.

crewcabconnection ·

h ·

lookin sweet not long to you be ride n around in that.. nice one

crewcabconnection ·

aiming for to get it done for the June LWE in Narooma. Still a looong way to go. Those pics are a few weeks old now, ended up replacing 90% of the running gear, the motor was a drop in, but checked over ... feels like everything else has been swapped. The auto electrican rewired it last week, so it's pretty much registerable.

Massive amounts still to be done for the interior fit out still ...

crewcabconnection ·

23/06 Update

Look! It stands up on it's own ... seems like it's been on the hoist forever...so big smiles today to see it on the floor. The suspension height is pretty 'stock', can go down a bit, but not doing that until got all the test of the gear in it. Hoping to get down there tonight to underseal the chassis ... but looks like some joker's parked in front of my HOIST.

....turned it over for the first time tonight, turned the lights on ... it works!!! when I get the gear stick in and an accel pedal might go for a drive....

Not so much to do now....

The dash shelf has been painted matt black as a homage to it's creator.

Indicators and dropped front bar - no seam! - worked out well. Rossi style headlights.

Chrome hot rod style indicators which are very bright. US spec lens' which are repro - but now got some noice Hella German ones with VW chrome not repro...

The other side.

bugboymatt ·

Mate thats lookin very nice indeed.

wezley ·

Looking beautiful mate; gives me inspiration when months go by and my wallet gets lighter... looking at that makes it worth it. great job. 🙂

pod ·

thats nice and as others say cant wait to see in the metal 🙂

crewcabconnection ·

Didn't always look this good ---- this time last year ----

Still got a long way to go, not started the interior yet, that is a massive job for what I want. Will be ready for Narooma I hope in June. And yes, wallet is low....and that's without the Deluxe Trim, Disc brakes, Safaris, Roof Racks etc.

The window frames are ordinary...but will do for now...couldn't afford to do everything I wanted. But guess I'm not alone in that.

Did start it tonight ... that was cool ... and turned on the lights ... with the addition of a gear stick and acel pedal it might even drive I dunno.
