D.B History: Part Two:Tube Chassis Car. SOLD.

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/47146/db-history-part-twotube-chassis-car-sold

dangerous ·

This car is now for sale, see latest posts beginning page 2.

Around the end of 1998 I contracted Simon Holgerson
(V8 Bourbon Bug) to build me a chassis to the rolling stage
to my own design specs.
I wanted a beam front and De-deon rear axle, and originally
wanted to use an Oval body that I had...but it ended up
being too rusty.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

Used my Bus box but withe shorter 28 spline axles.

dangerous ·

Here is my Brother John and Snuff the dog.
My Bro has always been a Go-Getter and massive help
in my projects, from finding materials, to painting my cars.
And he always makes himself available when I need a favour....especially in the dollars department.
How else do you think an award wages fitter and turner
can afford to do this?!

dangerous ·

While my Brother was away prepping and painting the
early '60s body (scrapped the oval idea due to rust),
I was painting and assembling the chassis.
All the aluminium was powder coated silver.
All hardware was gold/zinc plated.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

Over the two weeks of Christmas 2001 I did the final assembly.
It came out weighing 1750lbs with me aboard(I was over 100kg but am now around 75).
Pan car was 1870lbs....but I was slimmer then.
I would guess with the N/A engine, and me being about
60lbs lighter, that it would weigh about 1600lbs with me.
(about 750kg).

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

Over a one year period I struggled with all sorts of
handling and engine woes.
Eventually I added 60lbs of ballast up front and increased the tyre size to 11.5" x 28' tall M&H's.
Eventually I got a couple of high Nines @ 147, and a
great 6.19@117 on the 1/8 mile at Warwick.
But sadly at the next Willowbank meeting I crashed on the top end.
See some of the carnage in the "Damage" post that Pete started.

dangerous ·

This is the old '56 Oval body and the start of the TIG welded, mild steel chassis work.

The oval body was way too rusty, and so I ended up scrapping it.
I found a clean early sixties shell to use instead.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

pete wood ·

So guess that's a whole new car then.

Just out of interest, any reason why you've chosen a KL beam over BJ?

pete wood ·

I had a look at dedion suspension on the net. I'm surprised it didn't work. What were the issues do you think? Was the beam bending? was there some sort of odd rear steering effect going on under load?

[ Edited on 21-12-2005 by pete wood ]

dangerous ·

The K&L front suspension was much lighter.

Ladder bars in conjunction with the De-deon
wouldn't allow the car to "roll", and it felt like an
over-laden ute.
Parrallel four link would have been better.

Reaction to engine torque would unload
one tyre....that symptom reduced as the car
progressed down the track, and picked
up speed.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

pete wood ·

so I guess the 56 body is the new car you are building?

What rear end setup will you use this time?

BTW, can I just say, even though I can see it's cost you lots of time and effort, people like you give the rest of us the guts to have a go with our own cars. keep up the good work.

dangerous ·

Thanks for the kind words pete.
The oval body has been scrapped and was the original
body that I planned on using.
I ended up finding a mid sixtys shell that was in much
better shape, and that is what was on the car when I crashed.
The car is quite reparable.
I am still undecided regarding the rear suspension.
I did narrow a type 3 IRS to use but it is heavy.
I also split the De-deon axle in the middle and
anchor it under the tranny with big Heim joints.
The result was like a swingaxle in wheel travel,
but with a low roll centre. (still with CVs).
I really need to keep the CV joints due to the 930 trans and its proposed position.

dangerous ·

I think Dave Burchall(?) has some spy photos from when he was up here last.....Dave?

humpty ·

You seem to be getting that spark back Dave...
Are we going to see this beast out again someday?

Either way, this car is part of Oz drag racing history and it lived a fleeting but eventful life. Hopefully to one day return...New and improved!

Its great to see these pics, if for nothing else, but to see how you did it, who helped (cheers to your bro) and to marvel at the tenasity!

Good stuff!

dangerous ·

Front suspension with rack & peanut steering...massive bump steer!

[ Edited on 22-12-2005 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

Check out where the shift rod ended up!

humpty ·

Ha! Quick Shiftin 'Highballin' BERG shifter!!! Good stuff!
I know some hotrodding Dub brothers that'd love that shift set-up!
😂

dangerous ·

Thanks Simon!

pete wood ·

No wonder you got bump steer :duh

So what motor is going in it this time, the old blown jobby?

[ Edited on 25-12-2005 by pete wood ]

dangerous ·

I was thinking Normally Aspirated.....Blowers are sold.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

With the rack located in the same position, I was able to get the bump steer down to nearly zero
by adjusting the height at which the heims attatched to the stubs.
Technically it needed to be mounted to the lower beam ( in my case) with the tie rods running parrallel with the trailing arms...but the fuel tank was already mounted.

dangerous ·

Here is the modified trailing arm that I am thinking about using.
The forward hiem joint mounts about 32 inches forward of the axle centre line,
and the other one anchors to the chassis under the CV joint.
The coil over shock mounts ontop of the bearing housing.
Because of how I have attatched the rod ends, camber and toe can be adjusted
for any given ride height.
Despite the swing axle wheel travel, I think this will still be better than the usual drag racing swing axle setup,
because of it's adjustability and lower roll centre.

dangerous ·

Here is the 930 4-speed tranny.
It has a crownwheel that is about 9.5" in diameter.
For comparison, the beetle is just under 7" and the bus is just over 7.5".
The ratios are very tall but Albins makes many ratios and a dog-rig kit for this tranny,
so the crappy synchros will go.

[ Edited on 1-1-2006 by dangerous ]

humpty ·

Jeebus!...that box is tall....
Looks not much longer than a 091 though....Inline shift rod too...
Ive never driven a old 930...So is the shift gate the same as a dub?
What sorta clutch you gonna run with that....Multi plate?

dangerous ·

The tranny is about an inch longer at both ends, so will need to be pushed forward
about 2" to get the belhousing face back to standard.
The clutch will be the same single disc 180mm deal I am using now but with a Saab hydraulic throw out bearing.
I used a dual disc deal for the blown engine, but if I ever went for boost again I would most likely use ONE of
those sintered Iron discs in the same diameter.
The shift pattern is same for the forward hears, but I think forward and left of first is where reverse is...but I have
never driven a 930 either!

[ Edited on 2-1-2006 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

This unit, and the separate bearing that clips on after the boot is fitted,
was bought from a Saab Spares shop.
I made an adapter so that it would bolt onto where the Porsche slide tube used to be.
It takes up alot of belhousing depth, and will require a line fitted,
and an extension to the bleeder nipple so that I can bleed the system with the engine fitted.
Why? Because the 930 uses a "pull type" clutch arm, and I want to keep my current clutches.

humpty ·

Very trick! Impressed to say the least...
For years we have been running the usual HD KEP type clutches and a very strong left leg.....
Have thought about upgrading to a Hydralic clutch but havent actually done it.
This set-up would make life so much better!...
The advantages with this rig are obvious.
Would it be tough to make it work in a VW type transaxle?

dangerous ·

Because of its height, it would be difficult to make this unit fit inside a VW bellhousing,
although a 2lt bus belhousing would go close with a single disc, diafragm deal.
You can get a CNC brand slave cylinder and replace the cross fork bushes with bronze, and most probs will be gone.
Also the later style diafragms are not as heavy to disengage.

pete wood ·

humpty wrote:Very trick! Impressed to say the least...

Kimm Garland from indian has a Hydraulic setup on his crewcab. Can't remember exactly which slave cylider it uses, but it's all pretty simple in a baykombi. Be a bit fidly to setup in a beetle though. You'd probably want to go to a whole different pedal box I'd say. Something that pivots from the top, not the floor.

dangerous ·

Here is the CNC Slave cylinder.
My Brother set up the master cylinder on a late beetle (steel pedals, not cast),
by welding a boss onto the pedal arm, and mounting the M'cyl to the fire wall.

dangerous ·

The first photo shows the early style pressure plates that ask the TO bearing and arms to fight the clamp load to disengage the shoe from the disc.
The early Kennedy Green clutches are like the one on the right.
The second photo is of a late diafragm, and the pedal pressure is used to invert the diafragm, rather than fight it.
The new Kennedy's are like this, and have much lighter pedal pressure for a given clamp load.
Although some are still very heavy.

humpty ·

Ive been running the diaphram type (1700lbs KEP) on my 1776 for years, without issues or heavy pedal, my brother runs the older style KEP(2100lbs?) in his Notch (RS Liberty powered) and it is quite heavy. I have the same type for my 2276 turbo job, and I am looking for ideas to make this car more drivable...Especially as the wife likes to drive my cars.... Anything I can do to make it more enjoyable would be and advantage! I am familiar with the CNC type of slave set-ups but that internal deal looks way more effective and more direct....Plus it eliminates the potential for thrust fork failure...

dangerous ·

Went down stairs today and took off the covers to get a plan of attack.

dangerous ·

I will show every one the parts of the car, and perhaps some suggestions and enthusiasm may roll in.

dangerous ·

At this stage I want to remain Normally aspirated, and use a 930 transaxle with Albins dog gears.

humpty ·

Hmmm.... Now that looks a little sad actually.... But oh the potential!.... You might get lucky with a G50 box and find one with the OG LSD.... I'd hate to imagine the cost to rebuild one though..... There's a mob in LA that has loads of Porsche bits.... Could prolly find their details for you....

JVLR ·

Get this thing on the track!Luv chassis work...just makes for a real racecar:thumbJVLR

Dasdubber ·

Give me a yell if you need a hand when you get around to concreting Dave! (that is unless of course you pay the pros to do it) It'll be much more comfortable to lie under your cars 😉

dangerous ·

humpty wrote:You might get lucky with a G50 box and find one with the OG LSD....
I already have a 930 4-speed which are super tough.
just need a ratio change...well four ratios actually!

Still looking for front and rear suspension suggestions.
Thinking of struts up front(or a beam?),
and semi trailing arms at the rear.
Have to stay IRS with CVs due to tranny position, and wheel base.

JVLR ·

Dave, where did your early front piece come from?JVLR

dangerous ·

JVLR wrote:Dave, where did your early front piece come from?JVLR
The mould is owned by Mike Waldron who works at Vintage.
I got the front through CBB and his fiberglass guy.

JVLR ·

Any prices on that Dave? Good to see you are using hydraulic setup for Clutch use.

dangerous ·

I can't remember...a grand? Give Mike a ring at Vintage.

JVLR ·

ok thanks for that!JVLR

Boostn ·

Hey Dave,

Have I missed something?
Are you getting back into the chassis car?
I'm getting exited!

humpty ·

Boostn wrote:Hey Dave,

I always knew he would... As much fun and as good as the pan car is, when you have a perfectly savagable chassis sitting in the shed and some time on your hands... What would you do?

PS: I have no idea where Dave finds the time!.... You've got the road car proj, the pan car to maintain and soon to be studying right?

nbturbo ·

Keep it coming-getting me all juiced up to get started on mine.I have seen a few US cars with a solid adjustable steering arm joining the 2 stubs, and a short one from the steering box to the LH stub with 4 Heim type pivots at each end of the steering arms.

Doug Sweetman ·

You missed one crucial point... when you have a tube chassis sitting in the shed, some time on your hands...... and a spare fully prepped large capacity drag motor in the bottom of your wardrobe.... 🙂

This is great to see. I remember your blown car was in zoom when I was in uni, very inspirational and I was shocked to hear you had crashed it. Would be great to see it back on the track (even in NA form !).

Makes me wish I ran a company with a sponsorship budget.....

pete wood ·

dangerous wrote:I will show every one the parts of the car, and perhaps some suggestions and enthusiasm may roll in.
Dude, enthusiam I can provide, but suggestions...:o

I was just about write some then I realised, what useful thing have I got to add? I feel like a google mechanic compared to your vast experience in VWs and drag racing. I can only parrot what I've seen other people do and that is no help to you.

All I can say is, get that chassis car off the dirt and into the workshop!!! :bounce

Love it, make it roar again!!!

Otherwise...well your no better than those ricey Honda racers [pete makes blatant ploy to wind Dave up to work on chassis car]. :P

Boostn ·

Hey Dave,

let's just say that engine in the white thing slipped into the chassis car.
With less weight and the better 60th ing rear end,

What are we talking?

063bug ·

.... I can see the Warwick Weekend 2007 being extremely compeditive..... can't wait

as per Pete I don't feel worthy enough to add any suggestions.... just don't stop the pictures and information as we all learn so much from volksy gurus 👍

dangerous ·

I always respect anybody with some constructive input.
Whether or not they have any experience or not, does not prevent them offering some input.
We can all learn from each other, no one on this planet was born with knowledge,
well, some relgious dudes were...but were talking cars here.

A second set of eyes, ears, or a mind, can always see things in a different light.

With my current engine and its poor state of tune(?), the reduction in weight
should see some 10s at about 120, but I wont give up until I can see a 9 again...or the money runs out!

Stanley ·

nice...

Stanley ·

excellent stuff Dave...will look forward to having a look

humpty ·

All I can offer you Dave is advise on colour.... Thats my thing, thats what I teach, thats what I know.... Im one of the lucky few in this world that actually gets paid to colour in pretty pictures!

Keep it coming big fella, the world needs to see this baby in action again... And soon!

how about starting out white at the front and then a subtle fade to white at the rear...🙂

Ross Freestone from the Tamworth has run 10.71 at 124(1600lbs) in his "Hound Dog" Beetle way back in '92 I think.
He still has the car, but never races it.
I heard rumours that he was going to step it up and get his ss/c record back.
Berg's is the fastest N/A Beetle to ever run in Australia @ 10.37@128.98mph(1680lbs)

The power that Berg produced whilst here in Australia in 1995 was was fantastic, even by todays standards.(lots of RPMs!)

I remember that!.... I also remember that Gary had a hell of time keeping oil in the engine.... It kept blowing it out the breather!... He ended up making a huge butt ugly (it was painted white too Dave 😵‍💫 ) oil breather tower at Hellbug to contain it!... I wonder where that container is now?... I don't think its still on the car, because the BERG's aren't running the 'BIG' engine anymore... It would make a nice collectable!

Anyone interested in a project for next years Warwick meeting?

vwfastback ·

I have a garage full of projects at the moment, but allways interested. What have you got on your mind Dave?

humpty ·

WHAT!.... Your not suggesting what I think your suggesting?..... Tell me your not!

dangerous ·

A guy's got to eat!

humpty ·

Get a job!.... Sell your body!...... Besides.... Eating is over rated.....

vwfastback ·

What else goes in to those homemade date muffins that puts you in this situation Dave?

dangerous ·

Yes I want to sell this project.
$3500 is the asking price and just ask if you want any more photos.

Has fiberglass doors and panels, ladderbars, 11.5" tyres on 10" rims.
Mounts to suit a Bus gear box and also axles to suit 930 (or Commadore) CV joints.
No front suspension, and will need uprade to rear roll cage bars to be legal for ANDRA(need 1.625" and are currently 1.25")
I am on the Gold Coast QLD and can be contacted via U2U.

I will post this in the "For Sale" section later, but here is my home
and less tyre kickers frequent this place.

vwfastback ·

More photos please. Current state, wheels, tyres, CV's frame where it joins.

Can you show what has to be replaced, so we can work out the extent of the work.

Cheers,

James C.

dangerous ·

These are Dragway centres on a fabricated 10" rim.
Tyres are M/T 11.5x28"

dangerous ·

More photos tomorrow, but there are no front wheels and tyres, nor front beam.
You may like to replace all the bar work from the winscreen forward.
All the main structure is tip-top. The damage was limited to the front beam
and tubes up to where the pedals were mounted.

Rear damage was limited to the bars rear of the engine, but you may want to
redesign the rear suspension, or replace it with a swing axle, and re-use the 32" ladder bars.

dangerous ·

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=47106&page=1#pid439673

Some of the chassis damage here.

dangerous ·

Here are a whole bunch of pics I took today:

Fiberglass doors with quick release pins

Small air scoop in back window & 28 spline axles.
The axles are 12" long and suit 930 or Commadore CV joints.

[ Edited on 16-1-2007 by dangerous ]

dangerous ·

Side view with BIG scoop.

dangerous ·

3" wider rear guards.

vwfastback ·

That is so nice Dave. Now I understand.
This needs to be back on the track.

dangerous ·

New fiberglass nose.

dangerous ·

I will dig out the ladder bars tomorrow and show them in place.

The axles in some of the first few photos above are 12" long and have a spline to suit Commadore, or 930 CV joints.
The CVs are now fitted to my pan car, but any wreckers will sell you the GM or german CVs,
and you can use the flanges to weld onto some beetle stubs and Kombi tranny flanges.

humpty ·

Would like this to come to WA.... I might have to have a chat to a few mates about this Dave.... Hermann has just the engine for it sitting on his engine stand.... Will keep you posted....

dangerous ·

Sorry to spoil everyones hopes with me and this car.

I really love to drive my Pan VW and I think it will be a long time before
I get a chance to put any money into fixing this one....I have so much more unfinished business with the pan-car.

The other thing is that I can make better use of the money at this time,
and the space that the car has been taking up since I crashed it in November 2002.

It is sad to hear this Dave, but I for one, understand your situation... All the massive work that you have put into your racing over the years is inspirational stuff to us all.... And you can only spread yourself so far.... Lets hope the chassis car will live again soon, and be out there terrorising the dragstrip once more.....

Stanley ·

Dave took the time to show me some video of this car in action and I can only say it was pretty inspiring stuff. I can say however, I've had the opportunity to see it in person under Daves house. With some minor work (and i'm by no means an expert but appreciate good work) this would be a great purchase.

It would be great to see another volksy on the track.

dangerous ·

Photos of the ladder bars.
As I was fitting this side up for the photos I have a view that this Idea will work pretty good.

I would like to re-mount the inboard anchor however.
It is just tacked on the chassis rail at the moment.

dangerous ·

Inboard Heim Joint

Forward Heim Joint

Lower shock absorber mount.

dangerous ·

Despite the camber change, I think this system will work pretty good.

It should be as good, or better than any other swingaxle drag car.

The camber change will be limited by the strap.

The actual camber angle can be adjusted (with out a ride height change) using the inboard hiem joint.

The toe-in can be adjusted with the forward hiem joint.

The roll centre will be lower than a conventional swingaxle.
It will be around the centre line of the diff, rather than above the tranny like a normal Beetle swingaxle.

Boostn ·

Hey Dave,

what's the problem with the rear end?
It all looks good to me like it will work great!!!!

I remenber you saying that you didn't like something you had done and that's why it rolled, but it looks good?

Have you changed it?

dangerous ·

Hi Nick,
Yes after the crash I changed the rear suspension from a deDeon ,
to what you see here.

There WAS a dropped axle type thing connecting the bearing housings on both sides
and it went under the tranny with a 'track locater' to stop lateral shift.

The ladder bars remain the same, and I cut the dropped axle to make these new, independant 'trailing arms'.

I think it needs some tidying and perhaps a small brace on the inboard 'anchor',
but other than that...I reckon it would be sweet.

dangerous ·

Boostn wrote:I remenber you saying that you didn't like something you had done and that's why it rolled, but it looks good?
When the car had a deDeon axle AND the ladder bars, the car COULDN'T roll on its longitudinal axis.

This is not the case anymore.

When I crashed the car, it just spun out and hit the wall on both ends of the car, it didn't actually rollover.

Still...pretty scarey at 134mph backwards!

pete wood ·

🙁 but I understand why.

Boostn ·

If anyone has an engine that makes about 250 hp they could run mid to low 11's all day.

How much would it weigh Dave? 1600-1800 lbs?

most of the hard work is done and would make a fun car to race for not much cash.

Doug Sweetman ·

I'll say it again.... someone needs to buy Mr Penroses Big Banger Autocraft turbo, + this chassis....... imagine the possibilities 🙂

dangerous ·

Depending on driver weight, this would be under 1600lbs with a 75kg driver.

250hp would put you solidly into the 10s with this car.
500hp would put you into the 8s.

I ran 147 mph in this car with 450hp, and it was 1830lbs with 60lbs ballast up front,
me at 100kgs,
and 100lbs worth of blowers and fuel system atop the Pauter engine.

A VW cased engine would be much lighter.

humpty ·

Adolf (450HP TIV/Auto), Kurt (VDub R&S in Freo) and I had talks about getting this car to Perth, but couldn't justify the shipping.... Now if someone could get it to Perth for us, we'd be laughin'!!!!!!

Anyone want to help us poor WA boys out?

nbturbo ·

Dave--How is this going?-been out of action for a while.

[ Edited on 22-3-2007 by nbturbo ]

dangerous ·

Would someone like to buy it?

nbturbo ·

Definately a good place to start for somebody-all the difficult and expensive stuff's been done.My roll cage alone has cost about $1,000, without my time getting it all ready and notching the pipes etc. Will have a chat to you later this year about what I will need to build up a Kombi box for mine.

dangerous ·

This is an engine pick from around 2001.
The arrow points toward the 32mm fuel line.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Ahh the memories...

I guess that I was lucky enough to see this car run at a Test and Tune. Didn't know Dangerous was there till he fronted up at the line. I was sitting in the grandstand with a few mates watching another mate run when i got a tap on the shoulder and one of my mates said " here's one of your try hard VW mates". I didn't actually know Dave at the time but knew of him. He fired this thing up and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Sounded awesome and a few of my mates laughed and said "it sounds like a tractor". I replied with "fastest blody tractor you'll ever see". They roared laughing and continued with the smart comments till Dave staged and literally drove it off the line with no launch.

By about the 100 ft mark it looked to be fairly quick but my mates still were laughing. Then when Dave hit 3rd he poured on the power and it just bolted. Broke traction top of 3rd from memory so a short shift into 4th and squeezed it on again and run through for a low 10 pass from memory at about 110-120 mph. I sat and just smiled while the comments from the peanut gallery behind were that of total shock. One of mates said " imagine how fast it would run if he got on it for the whole quarter mile". I didn't say much in return apart from "yeah I'd imagine it would be pretty quick indeed".

those were the days.....

To nice off a car to sit in a shed , If beetle isn't ready for this year event ,get that golf (GTI ) water pumper to the track ! That class needs races and just drive around & around ,you could and up having more then 10 runs in2days .
Thats 2years off racing craig ?

HI Guys

Thanks for the kind words!😎
I don't take any comments personally from the V-dub community as I know your just trying to spur me on.

After spectating at Warwick,it started to get the juices flowing for a bit. Those feelings disipated quickly.😢

AS far as I know the crank is at Stan's,not sure what's happening with anything else.
Basically all I need to do is install the hard fuel line through the tunnel & replace brake fluid.

However,I'm completely unmotivated with my bug and I'm focused on my Finance Business.

I do look forward to racing again sometime, esp against some V8 friends.😬

Regards

Craig Paton

Troy Alder now has this car.
Will be great to see it back in action.

just out of curiosity Dave.... why no comeback on this car? was it just a psychological thing after the stack or did u just loose interest in the car itself?

Initially there was some mind issues going on,
but more, which 'life direction' to head.

But after I began to race my old car again, in All Motor Class,
I realized that any money and time spent on the tube frame car'
could be better spent engine development, on the one I am racing now.

The other benefit was that being sold to fellows that i knew well,
the option would always be there to try my engine out in a lighter car at some point.
