My cars have just cleared customs

I had to tell someone. what a pain in the arse this whole shipping business is, plus I had to pay the government for the privilege of bringing my own cars in, even though I've owned them for several years.
This is the only vw this time, but I have to go through it again when I bring my splitty over, couldn't get 3 cars in this container, should have left the furniture.
If you see us driving around, give us a wave.

PS Anyone got a single port 15 or 1600 they don't need? the ghia is still running on the original engine and 6v

Very cool - Although I haven't had much to do with shipping stuff from overseas I could imagine that if the Government has their hand in it then it will be expensive and difficult!

Hope to see you around - are you going to come along to Dubs by the Pub?

congrats!! But bummer about the customs or whatever they call the damn tax

Cheers Guys

It has been a real costly exercise, but worth it now we're through. Not only did they charge us import and GST, they implemented this new customs system that doesn't work. My container has been sat on the wharf since the 7th Dec.
We'll definately be going to the dub pub, even got myself a poo brown early bay deluxe, it's like a surrogate for the splitty, but not as cool. We'll be taking both, unless the splitty arrives by then

I didn't think the charged all that on a) cars over 25 years old and b) cars you have personally owned for a long time

Unfortunately they use any excuse to rape you now. Vehicles over 30 years old don't get charged gst, but you still get done for 10%, the annoying thing is that they value a car at the australian market price, not what you paid. I brought my lotus over and they are considerably cheaper over in the uk because of quantity, I've owned it since new and it was brought in under the personal import scheme, still have to pay 20% of whatever they value it at. Considering that there a very few of them over here, they may aswell pluck a figure out of their arse as there isn't a market trend to follow. At least my splitty should be cheap, a 57 ratbus isn't going to be worth much over here. Even though it's an unwelded unrestored panel, it's in 30 year old paint and logo's.

Nice

shall wave if I see you about.

Yep the government have to maintain their multi-billion dollar surplus somehow!

Glad to see another cool KG will be roaming around brissy! Watch out for those shopping cente speed bumps - looks like you may rip the front end off! (I love 'em low!)

Beautiful car flipflop.

I know your pain. In 1998 I imported a used Meyers Manx SR body from the US. Customs charged me a total of AU$830 on a body that cost US$1000 or at 62 cents in the dollar exchange at the time AU$1620. That is a tax of 53%. I know that things have changed since then, but it's an outrageous rip off.

But then the Romans had a saying. "Taxes are never levied for the benefit of the taxed." It's still true.

Great to see another KG in the neighbourhood.
Low is the only way to go!
It looks like the rear needs lowering some more!
See you at Dubs at the Pub!
