Need help. Flywheel to gearbox probs.

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/48236/need-help-flywheel-to-gearbox-probs

bajachris88 ·

was mentioned this before i got his car. Was suspected to be a loose fly wheel, from hand, doesn't seem to be the case. But anyways, grinding has occured at the bottom of the gearbox casing where the flywheel and clutch sit in. Shiny metal on flywheel proves its the culprit.

Any ideas of what hte prob maybe? seems like there is plenty of room to fit, just a bit of grinded metal on the bottom.

is it a 6v box that has been ground out ? maybe they didnt take quite enough meat out

bajachris88 ·

hmm. maybe the case. its a 1300 motor. Think that may be stock for its yr. It is 6v though, the car that is. I think it still is the stock box, cause its just a beetle one, no kombi box or anything in my baja. (1967 model if that helps)

Are you sure that it wasnt ground out when you pulled the motor out? Not using a jack to remove the engine would grind the bottom of the bellhousing for sure

bajachris88 ·

nah. before I got the car, bernie (karmen on avd) stated that there was some seriously loud racket grinding noise going on there. He checked everything, and thought it was a loose flywheel. (thats what his diagnosis was, he didn't get to check and take off the engine to look though)

The grinding, isn't just a scratch or anything. Will have to take photos, but some serious stuff. nothing a 3 second scrap of taking the engine out could have done.
One thing too, the gearbox, from looking back at it after taking out the engine looks somewhat tilted one way (rotated sorta when aligning the bolts and surface of the gearbox in comparison to the car. I took note of the ground and its level, its crooked from the car.

Was a thought that that disposition may be the prob, but the engine would have rotated with it though. So hmm.

will have to get photos for u guys.

MickH ·

Hopefully not bent frame horns...:duh

bajachris88 ·

hmm, being a baja, it has been beaten in the past, dam. I hope not. will find out sooner or later once i get this body off. All bolts are gone, just gotta work my way through the glue/sealer aroudn the pan and body.

Will update with info when i get more of a betta look.

hellbugged ·

were the 4 engine bolts loose?

bajachris88 ·

the 2 bottom ones weren't. um, from memory, the top ones weren't to hard to take off at all. Not loose enough to remove by hand though.

dangerous ·

Hope the rear main is not so pounded out that the
flywheel can move about and munch up the bellhousing!

Still need to get those photos. ran out of time today, was busy getting the body off the pan.

Um, had a closer look, looks like there is a little lip of grinding all around the gear box where the fly wheel is positioned. Mostly at the bottom of it.

Flywheel has been grinded around too. Had a closer look, the teeth from it have been worn off, but its not even all around the teeth of the fly wheel. its like HUGELY grinded here and a little bit there. wierd thing is, i can't seem to find any obvious reminence of the broken teeth, must have been sanded into that black dust that is left.

Doing the full restoration (especially body off pan), i will probably try to start as fresh as possible when it comes go gear box and engine. Would be good though to have a 1300 and gearbox spare.

bajachris88 ·

!!!GOT PICS!!!

Did some indication lines showing u the position of the tunnel and the rear torsion tube of the pan, as well as the axies of the gear box.

Green = Pan

Blue = gear box

grinded gearbox : (closer up)

chewed flywheel.

bajachris88 ·

another pic of the flywheel

hellbugged ·

you scored a lightened flywheel!

maybe thats how they were balanced many years ago:P

bajachris88 ·

Lol, well when lookin' optimistically, ur right. hehe 😂

hellbugged ·

from your pics the frame horns do look bent. is there any visable indications of damage or creases etc? the left axle looks on more of an angle.don't panic it very hard to tell from 500km away, i'm probably wrong

realise that the bell housing does have a square lip behind the bottom bolt castings from the factory, the soft mag case isn't going to cause that sort of damage to the flywheel- need a better piccy of that one.

bajachris88 ·

dad mentioned maybe it was the little gear from the starter causing probs then (with the flywheel). Cause i can't see any other grinded surface but that lip, of what u talk about which could just be stock. IT doesn't look like fresh metal like the flywheel. Will look tomorro though and get more pics.

could be bent. Will look for that tomorrow. guess theres not much of a way to fix that ay? well no easy way if it is. I would imagine it would take a hell of a beating to do that though.

That wear is very typical for a 6 volt ring gear when the starter has been run on 12 volts,
and when the bushing in the belhousing is worn.
The teeth look like a 6volt ring gear, I hope the starter is not 12 volt because they dont match.
The picture of the bellhousing shows nothing that I would be worried about.
If it was being munched away by the flywheel, it would be shiney where it had been rubbing.

bajachris88 ·

ok, i got more pics. betta ones. guess what, the frame horns are bent. had a look.

Another think, the cog from the starter has shiny metal on it, my guess it has been grindin' with the fly wheel. Looks like this baja has the whole rear end routed,Lol. Ah well, more the fun of the challenge of getting it to the road. fun? :puke LOl.

Things like this are expected.
Got a link though on a kombi tranny and fresh runnin' complete 1600tp. 12 volt too, same with the kombi. The rear forks, well, will hav to research.

bajachris88 ·

compare the top image of the left rear fork, to this (the right rear fork)

bajachris88 ·

all the cvs and boots are being pressed into the rear forks. the boots have actually begun to get chewed up. and see how the bending of the right rear fork occurs after the cv and gearbox strap.

I'm not sure if that gearbox strap is some DIY job, or if its actually any good for forks and tranny. its just a tightened chain. But u live and learn from these things and probs.

below is the pic of the starter cog.

bajachris88 ·

the top view of it all:

the rubbers are routed too. they are pretty cracked and crap. but those rear forks will be the greatest reason for the curvature in the gear box.

the left one is like gently down, the right one is gently down, then steeper down. (Compare the 2)

anyone have any ideas about repairing rear forks? or just get a nu chassis?

bajachris88 ·

pic of closer lip on gear box

cv boot damage:

hellbugged ·

Chris you have not got C.Vs'....... yet. lets just call em axle tubes ( the axles are inside) and axle boots for now.

anyways, the bell housing wear looks pretty usual, even the elongating of the holes.

the frame horns are a worry, i'm not sure if the left is bent up or the right bent down.

glad to see you don't need a link on the tissues yet--thats the spirit!

bajachris88 ·

was just following in my dads terminology, he called em cvs, Lol. he don't know dubs. I don't know really any names of anything on the dubs, i just make em up on my way, sorta. 😉.

the frame horns are a worry. dont know wat i can do with them. however 1st car bug said that he may have an idea of a solution soon, dunno wats that about yet. Might have to find another chassis, (if worst comes to worst). But... if there is a will there is a way. i got hope.

But what can u expect i guess ay.

Purple Martin ·

Get a new pan! Pick a year with the best kind of suspension for a Baja.

The wear on the flywheel teeth isn't even: the wear pattern moves from the front edge to the back edge as you go around the flywheel, which means that the flywheel is bent too: get a new one.

In fact, given that the horns are bent, and the flywheel is bent, what are the chances that anything in the tranny and motor is still straight??? :o :o :o

bajachris88 ·

Dad was suggesting that i get the engine and gearbox out, (gonna replace em anyways with something of a little more guts and a kombi box), but have been talking to a few peoples, one brought up the idea of a may rack (a chassis aligner) used by panel beaters. If i get the right measurements and all, can bend it back. Might cost less than a whole new pan.

the best yr of pan for suspension, forget, think it was like 78 or something where it was both IRS and balljoint pan. but me finding a cheap on of those would probably cost heaps. dunno though ,see what comes in the future.

bajachris88 ·

here is the prob with the forks:

bajachris88 ·

rear-right fork has absolutely carked it. must have been like that 4 a while, cause its chocablok full of dirt.

and is very weakened, and is a very BIG of a crack:

bajachris88 ·

left has been distorted too. i blame the crappy chain around da box. it even left indentations and marks on the gear box case. 👎
