so on the way between coffs and sydney today my fasty was running crappy, when id slow down shed stall and not wanna start again easily. so i called the nrma man and he did something with the points? he said he might have set them too wide? what would that do to my car? anything bad? last time i had to call the nrma it was also because of the points, so i think i should learn how to 'fix' them myself. being very unknowledgable about the motor part of the car, would it be likely i can 'fix' them myself? yeh anyway ive rambled enough so let me know what you think! :bounce

the points should be changed everytime you do a tuneup on the car, as they wear and as the gap closes up the timing retards. You can clean them and reset the gap but id just put a new set in, set at 16thou or 48 degrees dwell. the nrma guy just opened the gap up to get you going so the gap isnt set as close as it should be and the timing may be a little out. Get a manual and read it if your unsure, its not a hard job.

Is it possible to replace the points with an electronic gadget? The siton doesnt have points.

The manuals we have vary a bit on settings depending on the model/year.
The overall range seems to be:
0.012" - 0.020" and
42 - 58 deg. dwell angle.
Probably anything in that range will run OK.
One book says to set new points with slightly more gap (less dwell) presumably because of the fibre block wearing.
You can set them with a 0.016" feeler guage, or an inexpensive "Tach-Dwell" meter to 50 deg.
You should to check the timing more often that the points.
If you lubricate all the little bits in the distributor by the book (felt ring, points pivot, cam, points plate) you should check that the points are still clean (of oil or grease) before snapping the cap on.

get a petronics electronic iginition. It comes with instructions and takes about 5 minutes to put in. No points, and costs about $100

I was talking to my local VW mechanic and he said he can get electronic ignition for my stock vacuum advance distributor for $175 (compu-fire)

Do petronics do a module for the stock dizzy's? Cause $100 is alot cheaper than $175!!

tassupervee 路

Id be surprised if they didnt.

The Petronix systems seem to have a better reputation that the Compufire setup?

Dunno why tho.
