A work mate has 2 barn door splits which, he wants gone.
Both have been in long grass for about 12-15 yrs.
They would be suitable as donor cars, most doors and windows are there. No motors, but gearbox's are there, but until cleared further, I don't know what else is under there
I have some rough pics, so e-mail or u2u me for details.
The cars are at Yamanto ( near Ipswich ) so maybe Ipswich KLUB VW may know somebody or be able to store them for later use
They have to be gone in around a month, or there off to the scrap people
Mike

You will be all happy to know we came to an arrangement, all should know that "u2u sent" now means sold...I didnt realise that, sorry for all those who i havent bought off when ive sent u2u's...
Hope they turn out good...
John check out www.dsk.com.au for all things split or visit Dave (aka Fred Bloggs) at the other website if you decide to bog up the semaphores...
byronbus ·
Oh and as most already know they are not barndoors and i have 2nd dibs because I sent the 2nd u2u
sand kombi ·
Ok guys what's the difference between barndoors and cargo doors🤪
[ Edited on 12-3-2006 by sand kombi ]
twoguns ·
barn door is not refering to the side cargo doors at all. a barn door (singular) is the over size rear hatch that runs from hte waist belt down and houses both the engine and the spare wheel above. a barn door kombi also does not have a peak over the window.
byronbus ·
barndoors are earlly splits, have a large engine lid and no access to rear, although some rare ones do...
Side doors are simply cargo doors...
byronbus ·
nice work wes, always beating me to it
Wag67 ·
well both are now home and every time i look at them i see more and more rust. will clean them out this afternoon and decide if they are worth doing up or simply stripping and using the best panels for a future reno.
pod ·
Good to see this turned out to everybodies liking without to much slanging going on😍
byronbus ·
Always worth keeping, someone could make them new again
frenzix ·
hehe im glad i could talk you out of snaking him bbus

Yeah I saw your Golf in there, nothing like it :P
Was that your greasy fingerprints all over it ???
crewcabconnection ·
noice one Roy...comment noted Bruce and appolgies to one and all. I agree they are fixable and well worth it. Hadn't previously seen yer 'before' shots Roy, top work ... kinda puts it in perspective.
Just have to take that leap of faith that it will work out ... It's not that long ago Wal posted 'off to the repairers' now look at it.
Even better to see that stuff is showing up without stupid start price tags too. You could write a book with the stories from people who've approached people about splits in fields that would rather see them rot that pass them on.
Sure that if these pair get the support and advice I've got through DSK and AVD, then should see another 2 back on the road.
Appologies once again Bruce.
byronbus ·
No wukkus, love the 13 window...nothing is beyond repair, think of the dollars you will save in grinding disks...
CCC, dont worry about it dude, i know both you and tim are kidding, hoepfully john does too...
How good are splits...everyone should have one
ClassicVW(pacific) ·
I just hate to see them broken up for the sake of a few replacement panels when the same panels are available off the shelf at little more than the cost of a cutting disc.
byronbus ·
i ment cutting the rust out, but i agree, dont part out...cut out and repair...
I love you roy...same wavelength
byronbus ·
Roy, must be your shout next weekend...

subibaja ·
my 2 cents worth and only my opinion
they are not worth a piece of shit
EVERYTHING is rusted solid
chassis is only half there gone due to rust
no sills
waste of time on a dirty old 11 window bus if you ask me
so dont be upset if he cuts them untill you have had a look yourself please
and i did tell john this the other day when we were loading and off loading it
terry
byronbus ·
My 2 cents worth, I disagree, a few on here would restore those...would be a real shame to cut up, pass them on if your not keen to do them yourself, but dont waste them...just my opinion
winerot ·
reading this i agree wit tha boy'z that believe in restoring these gems of the past
as ccc said it didnt take steve that long to get it finished, yes it is costly but whats
a new middle range car worth 10 seconds before you buy it then 10 seconds after
you drive it off the lot then the big question whats it worth after 2 or so years.
this is janns before resto
6 months later
this is the next one to be restored
when its finished i will run the arshole that suckered me into this over.
anyway back on track shannons insured janns bus for $25,000 over the phone without
pics within about 10 minutes of ringing them just from my description of the resto with
an added note of getting an in dependant assessor to look it over when finished & they will up the amount accordingly.
i drove to brisbane motor show the other week & back home have allways had bays but first split admittedly it has bay running gear but it was a dream to drive without a single
hicup, i am now hooked on them & the feed back from ppl is overwhelming about her bus
vw & non vw ppl alike see the beauty in restored old splits & memories of days gone by.
restore it or pass it on to some one that will (bruce) just check out the price or the replacement panels (roy) they are very cheap.
ok it cost me just under $30,000 to get janns on the road but as i said above it was nearly insured for that before being finished & will be more soon plus it will not depreciate like a new car does now (a friend has a 3 year old ss commodore cost $42,000 excellent condition can not even get $17,000 now for it, has resigned to keeping the white elephant) mate have alook at what they are restoring overseas compared to these 2 splits

Thanks for putting the cost of your resto out in th open, I was wondering but it seems a taboo subject so I left it alone.
I have always looked at resto V New shitbox comparisons and found the resto is always good value.
As for your mate's $42,000 Holden, I have always thought that they (new cars) depreciate at 30% per annum, so after 5 years or so they are worth the equivalent of several shiny beads.
For the record I have spent about $12,000 on my panel and it is not show standard, but that was never my goal. It is a reliable daily driver and if I scratch it or whatever i don't lose any sleep.

I agree, keep them and restore them or pass on to someone who will...as the sth aussie would always ramble on "that same work in a 2k bus as 8k bus, bottom 3 inches...
You gotta love splits...worth the effort

well at this stage at least one the cream one will be restored. the fate of the second will is still up in the air. It may be come a doner car for a few parts to save money or i may just offer it up for grabs. some sought after bits still on it
