My 66 beetle project.

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/49771/my-66-beetle-project

66deluxe ·

For about 8 years now i have been collecting parts for the build up of my bug. These are IRS floorpan, gearboxes, type 4 engines, Porsche brakes and wheels, suspension components, 914 guages speedo and tacho, Interior trim pieces, basically lots of parts andof course the bug itself. Here's some photos:

There is still a of work to do, but progress is getting made, Cheers Damo.

Something tells me this is going to be good. What are your plans?

66deluxe ·

Plans are to put this old sweetie on the pan and push it along with a 2613cc type 4 with 44 IDF's initialy then custom fuel injection setup. Once i get my new shocks for it i will put the body on after i do rear body mount mod then i will take a pic for you all. Cheers Damo.

cant wait 2 c the finishing resalt

Kafer Lover ·

looks the goods.

can you take a couple of pics of the connections for the sway bars.
I have the same bars for mine, and would just like to see how they are meant to look when its all put together.

Cheers.

Dasdubber ·

G'day Damien - good to see some pics of your handiwork thus far! Give me a yell when you are ready for the DTM.
Alan

Dasdubber ·

Any more updates Damo? Will talk to you soon re. picking up your DTM.

66deluxe ·

The only work so far on the pan is the installation of the master cylinder and rigid brake lines, also i will be changing the rear stub axles and gearbox drive flanges with ones from CB using the kombi c.v. flange. Found out that my brothers mate runs a Fulcrum suspension shop so will be able to get good shocks at cost :thumb. Engine side of things the parts are ready for assembly bottom end wise, after getting my DTM yesterday have decided will build a 2270cc type 4 first then when funds allow will go to 2613cc as i scored a good set of original german 94mm cylinders from a 2 litre type 4 i bought recently, and have them bored and honed for 96mm KB pistons heres some pics for you all. Cheers Damo.

66deluxe ·

And some more of engine and floorpan.

Dasdubber ·

Good to see some more pics Damo - those rods are just drop dead sexy! Good to see the first two DTMs in Oz (correct me if I am wrong) will be on a pair of QLD dubs! :thumb

66deluxe ·

Alan, here's some pics of the case mods for the DTM, i did today, cheers Damien.

Dasdubber ·

Sweet Damo! I'm sure you'll do it, but remember to cut the tab off in front of the alternator stand. Keep the pics coming mate!

66deluxe ·

Just some sub assy for checking and clearanicing, crank is DPR 78.4mm T1 journals, RAT Cam, CB 5.5" super race rods, modified Schadek 30mm oil pump.

Dasdubber ·

Is the cam split duration Damien? I know Raby is a big advocate of them to improve the efficiency of the heads!

nbturbo ·

Damien-are your CB drive shafts modified Type1's with the bigger boss welded on,or complete new castings?

66deluxe ·

Das the cam is a split duration cam, nbturbo i haven't got these yet so i don't know only looked at em on their site bust they look like new castings.

nbturbo ·

Thanks-I have checked a couple of US sellers-and they have a core charge or a change over service-so they are reworked items.

bond ·

this looks insane! looking forward to following this thread!

cram ·

nice 🙂 keep it coming!

66deluxe ·

I have put my 66 project on hold, due to the fact that i have a very good condition 72 auto notchy sitting idle in my shed, that i am tidying up to sell, at the moment it has a 1914cc engine with Engle W100 cam with twin 40 IDF's stock valve heads. I will be building a type 4 2 litre for it and sell the 1914 type 3 engine as I need to free up some funds to finish my 66. So here's a pic of the notchy, in about 2-3 months it should be ready for sale, then i can continue on my 66.

pete wood ·

man, just sell it as is. sounds like a great little car.

Dasdubber ·

Yeah Damo - that is a super tidy notchy. That will make someone very happy! :thumb

66deluxe ·

It's been a while since i have posted on my project but have pulled the finger out and got some new parts, got new front discs and also got a Kafer cup bar which will be installed by the weekend, have put in all the rigid brake lines and currently having a go at fitting two rigid stainless fuel lines if i ever go to fuel injection, I have welded the rear frame horns and welded in a small brace from the rear torsion bar housing to the front gearbox mount, i also have welded the seems on the shock towers on front beam after all this time hopefully the pan should be finshed by this weekend, new CB Performance rear irs stub axles with type 2 cv flanges are on their way along with some CB Rhino trans mounts. Then i will get the SSC transaxle rebuilt with super diff, 002 bus box 3rd & 4th gears, heavy duty side plate. So hopefully soon i can put the body on and see if the stance is right, by the way will need a few lads to help me lift the body onto the pan, here's some photos of me brakes that are finally done. Cheers Damo.

66deluxe ·

malcolm ·

she,s looking good mate luv project pics :thumb

dangerous ·

That Pan looks great Damo. Should drive pretty sweet!

Do you still have the Notch, I think Rod Richo(48 IDA) was Looking for a cherry one for his next project.

66deluxe ·

Yep i still got the notch it's in the shed sitting idle so let him know if he wants to come have a look, cheers Damo.

pete wood ·

just a thought Damo, but that pan would go heaps faster with a light buggy body on it instead of a heavy of bug body. 😉

66deluxe ·

I had to get a custom set of Flexi brake lines made to fit the brembo's that i am using, i found Wide bay brake hose service in Hervey bay. I sent the dimensions i needed and two days later they were in the mail box, they were $50 each but they are teflonhose with stainless brading and a clear plastic coating with a bend/lay line marking on them and they are tested to 5000 psi, they look the goods and fit perfectly. They meet ADR7 standards also, so no soft pedal for me when i hit the picks.

Dasdubber ·

Sweet Damo - keep plugging away mate and you'll be on the road in no time!

063bug ·

That pan looks awesome not to mention all the other extras.... it's going to drive as good as it looks...

66deluxe ·

I finished welding the kafer cup bar in today, very nice product and now i got a very strong rear end so i should not get any flex when i lanunch hard in the old girl, cheers Damo.

Craig Torrens ·

Where do the brackets at the shocks fit in relation to the body shell ?

What 's the cutout in the left horn for?

Looking Good 👍

Dasdubber ·

Nice Damo - you'll have to shoot me the contact details for the kafer cup bar (for the "new project").

LUFTMEISTER ·

2 x s/steel fuel lines to run down there.

:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb I was actually privileged to see the great project on the weekend and although I don't know much (only being a girl and all) it was truly impressive. Damo has done an AWESOME job so far and I just can't wait to see this VERY HOT 66 BEETLE leave it's shed. This dubber has a special talent, if you want perfection Damo's The Man. I look forward in seeing future projects hit the road.

:sandrineRACKIE

66deluxe ·

Craig, the cut out is for 2 fuel lines i will use if i ever go to fuel injection but for now i will just use one of them for the weber 44 IDF's, As for the brackets and the body i don't think i will have to remove much body metal hopefully. I had some more parts on the doorstep today, stubshafts are type1 with type 2 CV flanges, Moore mid mount and rhino mounts the rear end should be very solid now. Cheers Damo.

Hi all, well its been a while, but i have started getting the transmission built, Dave Butler is building it for me. I have three trans to get parts from these are 2 x SSC IRS and a 002 bus box. The parts that will be used are 9 tooth mainshaft, 002 3rd and 4th, 10/15 spider and drive gears. I still need to get a 3.88 R&P, and a superdiff. I have been cleaning the parts at work and they are very clean, so this should make building easy. I still need to clean intermediate housing and main case. The ratios i have gone four are: 1st 3.8, 2nd 2.06, 3rd 1.26, 4th .89 R&P 3.875. Cheers Damo.

kroozzn63 ·

wow that looks like fun if you know wat your doing

66deluxe ·

Just been doing a mock up assembly of the engine with DTM and trans installed to get an overalll idea of things, i am considering painting the gearbox black before reassembly, what do you people reckon. Leave it shiny or paint it black?

bond ·

shit hot mate! well done!

DIY-DUB ·

what are the little alloy bits you have rivited onto the cooling shroud on either side of the mainfold for?
trans colour: whats it going to look like after its been driven for awhile? id go black with polished ribs and bits on it myself😁
oh, the box behind the fan part, would i be right thinking its for an oil cooler?
the whole thing looks pretty nice:thumb

Dasdubber ·

DIY-DUB wrote:what are the little alloy bits you have rivited onto the cooling shroud on either side of the mainfold for?

I'm sure I don't have to answer for Damo but since I have the same DTM (Down The Middle) cooling system from Jake Raby in the US, I thought I'd chime in.

The alloy bits are to secure the engine bay sealing tin - holts will be drilled in those tabs and "nutserts" used so the sealing tin can then be bolted to the tabs.

The box behind the shroud is for the oil cooler - lines are taken from the stock cooler location up to the cooler which is fed with air from a big hose that exits the top of the shroud.

Dasdubber ·

Re. the gearbox Damo - I reckon keep in its natural finish! If you do end up painting it black and polish the ribs, be aware that the ribs tarnish and loose their shine pretty quickly (even when I used POR15 clearcoat to seal them)....the alloy material of the box doesn't maintain its shine as long as say pure aluminium. I painted/detailed my old box on the ragtop and it looked cool, but was just another thing to maintain to keep it looking good.

Damo, could I ask you about a few things?
1) oil pump - size/details?
2) alternator pulley - supplier/material?
3) heads - any pics of intake/exhaust ports and chambers(also any cc measurements)?
4) valvetrain - what are you using re. springs/retainters etc?

Cheers mate, looking good! Dave will definitely appreciate all the clean g'box bits (its looking like I will go all albins gears providing I can come up with the cash soon). Talk soon.

Well, i finally got the body on the pan, I had a few lads come round to help(Thanks). The rear suspension still needs more lowering but i am currently doing that now. The front fits perfect although needs to be lowered further. Very happy with how it looks now. Damo.

Dasdubber ·

Hey Damo - I thought you were leaving on saturday! The beetle is looking good (and will look better so after a little lower!)
PS your 1600 engine fired up well today - will shoot you a u2u at some stage.

nice work damo.. good luck in canadia..

66deluxe ·

HI all, well a bit of progress has happened since last i posted, the gearbox has been built, by Dangerous, my engine parts have arrived from Aircooled Technology, i have been playing around with the suspension, hopefully the body will be getting worked on soon. Aiming for Warwick for completion but would prefer a good month before to get everything done right and tested, especially those big arse brakes. Here's some pics, cheers Damo.

Oh no,
what have I started!😉

...or does he?...there was this one web site...

Dasdubber ·

I'm sure you could find a pic of Hot Maxie (aka Snickers) somewhere on the net if you really tried Dave!

Oh yeah, since my lefty is now semi-famous - I keep telling my wife it needs extra special attention....doesn't seem to work (I might have to give it a special name like Damo does, maybe that will work!) hehehe

bond ·

'princess sofia' will do just fine

LUFTMEISTER ·

hey damo was that snickers or SNIGGERS?😂

Dasdubber ·

Got started on Damo's beetle the other day (couple of hours) and continued today. The rear apron is going to be removable so all the spot welds were drilled out (thanks to Damo for the spot weld drill bit!!).

After cutting the necessary metal out from the inner support pieces the apron comes off, and whadayknow...there is always rust hiding somewhere!

Both sides

That is often the problem the old vw's rust from the inside out in a lot of places. This will make installation and removal of those stonking type IVs a breeze...

What started out as one tiny hole in the upper strengthener turned out to be a myriad of rust inside.....what started out as a four hour job turned into an 8 hour job! 🙂

Dasdubber ·

My aim with any rust repair is to make it invisible - I have seen some bad examples in the past of plates tack welded over existing rust which only delays the inevitable. I like to cut as much out as needed (but also like to leave as much original metal as possible), then butt weld in the new metal.

The first patch toward the rear was pretty easy due to access, but the piece behind the side trays (on each side) was not easy especially to weld (laying underneath flying red hot slag) as well as getting grinder etc into to knock down the welds. Knowing Damo I knew he'd want it done right even though it would cost some extra bucks initially.

The remaining paint will be knocked back before a skim coat of fillier will be applied before primer is layed down.

The little pin holes were welded up after this pic

So this is the inner section repaired - tonight finished up with the outer repair pieces being fabbed up. Obviously an entire bumper hanger replacement panel would be easier, but cost is a consideration.....and also aligning the bumper etc would have taken some fiddling. Also Damo, I replaced the two bolts that were snapped off in the bumper mounts.

Rust preventative paint was applied to the repair pieces (and wherever I could get it into the nooks and crannies) and tomorrow I'll weld in the outer pieces and finally get back onto the actual apron!

Al

bond ·

far out. me next. 🙂

Don't stress Nick, you have been in the waiting list after Damo's for a long while now. Will be in touch once Damo's is done.
Al

063bug ·

me too, me too....😂

Dasdubber ·

Got a bit more done today - patches were welded in on the outer sections - pressings were left in place for drain holes and also up the top holes were left to apply cavity wax (will be done after paint is applied).

Passenger side

Damo is going for the clean shaven look so the sound deadening tabs and wiring tabs were removed on the firewall.

After some trimming the apron goes on and off with no fouling (will save scratches later when paint is applied) - the lip where the spot welds were drilled out will be cut off and replaced next week (three days left as an audiologist - then full time in the restorations!!).

Everything looks neat

You can see the rust holes in the lip that was under the apron - filler wouldn't last 6 months over rust like this so it had to be repaired.

Dasdubber ·

The problem area was cut out.

New metal was welded in and ground down.

This evening I sanded down the engine bay ready for primer (hopefully by the end of the week if all goes to plan). Then I'll finish the apron mods and support brackets to stiffen up the rear end (so the apron is clamped between the guard and body)....all takes time 😉

Al

063bug ·

Just out of interest what do you expect in man hours to complete this removable panel?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

C'mon Alan your car doesn't need any body work. It's clean as!!! you got some figures on the new donk yet??

063bug ·

Nope.... need to find time to get the thing tuned (jetting) then some testing done.... but more importantly I have to recieve approval from the boss to be able to work on it 😉

My first test run might be the dyno day.... not sure if thats a good thing ❓ .... Any comments Dangerous??

I do have dollar figures though 😂

dangerous ·

Think about the dollars, and the boss approving an unnecc rebuild.
Then think about your second line again....dont do it.
Then do the first line.

You want to tune before test.

Dasdubber ·

Back to work today (forgot camera yesterday)...things will be a little slower until the little man (bub) gets settled at home.

However the rear apron was stripped today to get rid of the old paint and to discover if any more nastiness was hiding.

The sides of the apron that were drilled out (spot welds) had to be replaced as they were A) rusty and B) had too many holes (spot welds) - quicker to cut it right off and replace after making a template.

The welds were ground down and after these pics were taken a very thin skim of filler was applied to smooth out any bumps.

Inside was stripped where access allowed. Blasting would be nice, but since this is not a full respray just a quick strip was warranted.

The only nasty found was this rust hole on the lower edge under the seal - this was repaired this evening so hopefully tomorrow I'll throw on some primer (rust converter applied to bare metal in the mean time).

AL

sub60 ·

Hi I have been admiring your work for some time now,Terrific. May I ask what rust converter you use, and does it effect the undercoat etc, ie does it need to be removed completely before paint is applied. Thanks Mike

kyznet ·

Great work Damo. Just looked through the whole thread and am way impressed with how clean and shiny everything is. Spoken like a true girl!! 😂

The Brewmaster ·

Hey Alan
Going to be looking through this thread very closely as we have just got a 59 Beetle (Agnes) to play with ...... as well as when Wilfred the 74 SC Ute gets back.

Toni can work on Agnes and I can work on Wilfred.

No arguments over style or direction then ....😂 .... yeah right!

Cheers

sub60 wrote:Hi I have been admiring your work for some time now,Terrific. May I ask what rust converter you use, and does it effect the undercoat etc, ie does it need to be removed completely before paint is applied. Thanks Mike
I have been using septone of late - I've been advised by a well respected AVD member that they were recommended to not use rust converter under primer. I have been guided by the paint rep where I purchase my materials from so I suggest you ask some more questions as I will before making any decisions. I haven't had any problems using the product previously however in saying that I too will do some more research.

Here is the old metal which you can see why needed replacing (esp after drilling all the spot welds)

In etch primer

In high build primer

Engine bay in high build

The support brackets were made for the apron - you could just leave the standard nutsert (threaded nut fixed to the body) but considering you want to provide a sufficient clamping pressure to hold the apron between the body and guard, the brackets distribute the load more evenly (plus nuts less likely to strip out)

Will get some colour on it over the weekend or early next week then onto the next area of rust repair!
Al

66deluxe ·

WOW, thats so awesome Al, even in primer i'm smiling, thankyou for doing such a great job. I'll probably be getting the week after next off to come down and help out. Kyznet, thanks for the kind words, i'm trying to do the same as what Al, did to his 63 build with parts layed out and step by step build pics. Can't wait to finsih this bug and build that 2270 type 4.

Damo.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Looking good there kids. Noice.

sub60 ·

Thanks Al, Mike

063bug ·

.... pure Das porn......

Dasdubber ·

The slow tedious stuff is gradually being knocked over - started on the rear guard mating surface rust today - the pitted areas (and holes of course) have to be replaced with fresh metal.

Top sections were replaced and ground smooth, lower sections cut out leaving only the good original metal.

Drivers side done

Passenger side wasn't as bad

Whilst the holes were there, I blew out the dust etc, applied rust converter, rust preventative paint where applicable and then blew in a heap of cavity wax/rust protection before welding it all up. Almost got this side done but ran out of time tonight. Will finish tomorrow and then start on the front.

Dasdubber ·

Left rear guard mating surface all solid once again.

Front left quarter has had a decent whack in a previous life. I hate when the rain gutter seam is filled with bog so I ground all that out to start the tidy up.

Although I'd like to strip all of this back and start again not all resto's can be bare metal jobs - the hours and $$ rack up far too quickly. Damo was just after a quick tidy up to make it sound and solid so I'll leave most of it as is and fix any problems like the rust concealed by the filler.

This area marked was cut out and repaired.

Both sides inner guards have been plated over before (I still don't know why people bother with this type of "repair" as it just delays the inevitable). Doesn't look too bad until you do some more digging!

I always cut out the repair section first then mark it onto the repair area and cut it out to shape.

Oh dear Damo.... 🙂

This was before I vaccumed out the flakes and cleaned it up thoroughly. Fortunately the base of the heater channel was solid and inner edges were structurally sound as well. But the double skinned areas where the inner guard meets the heater channel was shot...other side will be the same unfortunately.

In areas I can't get a brush to (to apply rust converter) I use a spray bottle top and squirt it through any access holes I can find (eg. running board bolt holes etc).

The heater channel was repaired with new steel (inside of repair plate was painted in weld through primer). This is why giving a fixed quote on a resto is impossible - unless you can deliver a fully media blasted and disassembled shell, you can never factor in these sorts of hidden surprises. Another half day spent repairing an unexpected problem, but thats the way it goes when these things rust from the inside out.

Inner guard repair section was then tacked in place (butt welded) - final welding and grinding tomorrow....then to do the same thing to the other side!

Jack ·

Looking good Al! 😀
Amazing how something that dosent look that bad is, if you dig a little deeper!

Dasdubber ·

Hey Jack, yep you are right - there are always some nasties hiding!

Back to action today, the front left quarter was finished - will only need a very light skim of filler to smooth it out ready for paint.

Onto the front right quarter today - some more rust in guard mating surface and the smear of sound proofing 'tar' at heater channel level indicates same problem as the other side.

Rust in guard mating surface has been repaired in this pic, and damaged areas stripped to bare metal (from door being bent forwards).

Close up of damage adjacent to hinge

...and to front quarter

Same same, but different

After rust converter, kill rust paint was applied then rust proofing (cavity wax)....then it was sealed up with the inner skin on the heater channel.

The outer skin was tacked in place this arvo and will be fully welded tomorrow which will pretty much complete rust repair. Then there is just the repositioning of the rear body mounts, panel work to the drivers door and front right quarter (as per above), clean up of bonnet seal lip and behind washer bottle....will be in paint next week.

Then onto Jack's splitty!
Al

phatratpat ·

OH WOW !! I do dig your work sir !

Dasdubber ·

Thanks phatratpat 🙂

Damo.

Dasdubber ·

Thanks Damo. If anyone else knows of an early bay (wide 5) available to donate its running gear please let me know!

On another note, the antennae hole was filled today

Inner guard also completed, I try to dimple the rosette (plug) welds with the die grinder to try and replicate the factory spot welds - obviously you can tell the difference if you look really closely.

Spent the rest of today trying to realign the drivers door as it had been pushed forward when it was bent backwards (if that makes sense) so the gap at the b-pillar was huge (~10mm) and the gap at a-pillar was next to nothing (~1mm) which caused the door to rub at its front edge. I still have a little work to do but it is far better (~6mm and ~4mm b- and a-pillar respectively). Also started fixing the damage to hinge areas on door and in front of top hinge on quarter panel. Fortunately the welding is drawing to a close (only a tiny few areas to complete) then will start prepping the rest!

How did you do that Alan?

Dasdubber ·

koolkarmakombi wrote:How did you do that Alan?

BFH and block of wood to start with (big f'ken hammer) - both hinges were bent forwards slightly so they were knocked back to alignment. When the door was bent forwards the skin also came adrift from the lower hinge so the door skin itself sagged forwards and hit the a-pillar. I had to wedge the skin back hard against the hinge (looking inside the door), and rewelded it to the hinge itself.

The a-pillar fortunately wasn't pushed forwards (which would have buckled the front quarter more)...so I just had to straighten the buckle adjacent to the upper hinge pictured previously.

Believe it or not it has to get pretty brutal when realigning doors etc - this involves wedging various implements between the a pillar and the door, pushing, pulling, jamming etc etc. Hard to explain but when quite a strong force was applied to buckle it, an equal and opposite force has to be applied to un buckle it (very loose application of Newtons third law of motion!) 🙂

A mexican seal that clips to the bonnet will be used so the seal retaining lip was removed all around. The upper edge of the bonnet will probably see some adhesive backed closed cell foam or rubber (will address that after paint).

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

whats a "balls up" that pic was eh Al??

Dasdubber ·

Damo has been down the last couple of days (and tomorrow) trying to keep things moving safe a few bucks in labour as well. Unfortunately more cancer needed to be fixed today which kept me occupied for the majority of the time. Only one guard out of four didn't need repairs, and one may be beyond saving (will re-evaluate tomorrow to see if it is cost effective to repair).

I didn't take a pic of every repair as they all look much the same same but different.

Dasdubber ·

Was hoping to have the whole lot in primer by today but the rust put a spanner in the works. Damo spent time today cleaning and buzzing the existing paint back with 220 on the dual action sander (240 normally used but didn't have any in stock).

Today also saw repairing a crack in the passenger door near quarter window as well as a couple rust holes, plus a bit of work on the drivers door. More filler work and lots of sanding is getting the body into shape before primer (tomorrow hopefully). Once the high build primer is down a guide coat will be applied so some more sanding can be done and any final imperfections filled before colour goes on (single stage 2K).

I buzzed the body back late this arvo so only a bit more prep for Damo to do tomorrow before priming starts.

I'm excited but still in control, not a teenager anymore. Almost there before it returns to my place for final assembly.

vwsteve ·

Good to see things getting repaired properly, nice work👍

Dasdubber ·

Cheers rexy, appreciate it.

Speaking of which, I decided to repair the rear guard rather than finding another second hand one with unknown problems (see Rod's chop top thread for examples!)...around 7 or so repair patches were required on the guard mating surface but it is all solid now.

Obviously a lot of moisture was sitting under the tail light for quite a while...believe it or not all of this was covered in bog with only a couple of bubbles showing through the paint before we decided to dig deeper and uncover another "repair"

I had to hand form a repair piece with the right contour (don't have an English wheel unfortuantely). It was tacked in place and slowly welded right around making sure not too much heat warped the guard.

Lovin the hoist!

Here is the big man himself in action prepping the underside.

Damo had to make a quick dash to the loo after seeing how nice the underside of the guards turned out in anti stone chip (applied via Shultz gun). He was pretty excited!

The inner guards also received the same treatment along with under parcel tray and under tank etc.

Hopefully in primer tomorrow now that welding is FINALLY over! 🙂

Nice work boys!! Ready for dyno day damo?? no pressure lol

vwsteve ·

Man i had 2 good rear guards i could have sold you, dont you hate it when that happens🙂

vwsteve ·

Not trying to be a know it all or bag good work but ive always found it easier to prime the car first, rub it ready for paint , stone chip it before paint, let it flash off then hit the whole lot in 1 go, looking good though👍

kombimatt ·

What does 'flash off' mean?

vwsteve ·

flash off is letting the top layer of paint dry off before you paint over it, its what should be done between coats, you have to be careful with stoneguard because if its sprayed on too thick and painted over too soon you will get small air bubbles as the paint dries and can wreck the look of a good job, best to spray on a light coat, once again just a little unharmful advice😊

Dasdubber ·

rexy wrote:Not trying to be a know it all or bag good work but ive always found it easier to prime the car first, rub it ready for paint , stone chip it before paint, let it flash off then hit the whole lot in 1 go, looking good though👍

I'm always up for learning new things from others suggestions - especially from someone like yourself who has been around the industry for a lot longer than me! In this case Damo has decided to keep under the guards (and inner arches) black so it was applied and back masked to avoid painting over it. I may shoot a coat of satin black over the top for extra protection. On my old ragtop I adopted the method you described and applied stone chip after primer just before paint went on.

Long day today - Damo is keeping his headliner in place (hope your going to give it a coat of fresh white vinyl paint Damo as it looks pretty funky!) 🙂 As such it has to be masked up which always takes a long long time (plus back seat/rear trims still in situ).

Wiring didn't come out so it all had to be masked up. Providing Damo runs a wiring cover as per original, only the new fresh paint should be seen.

I've decided to switch from Spies Hecker to PPG for a trial run. After sanding the entire surface with 240 grit on D/A sander (and by hand where necessary) and scuffing in hard to reach areas with scotchbrite to remove any gloss, 2 coats of DP40 epoxy primer was applied (1:1 with hardener. 1.4tip 4bar)....after discussing options with the rep this was deemed the best primer to go over existing paint providing it wasn't baked (not possible since my booth is not ready yet!) (5min flash time btw coats)

After 15 minute flash time the HS Primer (High Solids (basically high build) - 2.0tip 3.8bar) was applied (2 coats also) - this stuff sprays THICK but reportedly sands nicely. Next step (after curing time) is guide coat and more sanding....fix imperfections then touch up HS primer before final sand (after more guide coat) and THEN colour (in this case PPG 2K single stage as the colour couldn't be mixed in base coat).

Almost there.

Brad ·

looks good.. but why would you goto all that effort and leave the rear seats and headlining in ???

Dasdubber ·

Leaving the rear set in was much of a muchness as it made no difference it came out or not....the fact the headliner wasn't coming out ($) resulted in having to mask down the b-pillars anyway and around the rear window, and under the rear side windows etc etc....so itw as easier to mask it right across the b-pillars in this instance. I guess we've gone further than Damo originally anticipated (and as a result more $ spent) so the line had to be drawn somewhere.....that line was the headliner 😵

66deluxe ·

Al, thats looking wicked the advice from Rexy is good too but not too worry i'm sure it will be fine, masking looks like it was a mission but nothing like the chop top. It's good to see it one even colour, looking forward to seeing the colour on it, thanks again for the great work your doing.

^ I really like the look of a car up on jack stands with lots of bits removed. I guess it reminds of WRC cars in service or something. I only realised lately it's not a healthy thing. Up on jackstands in 1 million pieces really means it's useless and it's going to cost money...funny thing is, the missus knew this years ago. 😵

Dasdubber ·

Damo, got the dash and inside doors/sills etc painted in colour today (forgot the bloody camera though!)....that birch green is pretty bright off the gun....hope you like it as it was off the codes you gave me 😉

Tomorrow I will do the final repairs after sanding the exterior (after guide coat) on any minor dents (remembering the deal was to leave the body work pretty much as is apart from rust repair).....then hopefully colour if all goes to plan not long after. Will be in touch re. pickup day/time after I know a bit more accurately completion schedule.

Al

66deluxe ·

Ok, so its still looks like og green though? Let us know when you want me to come pick it up.

Dasdubber ·

Damo - all the birch green vw's I've seen in OG paint have been lighter (not as bright) but admittedly after 40 years or more of UV exposure it is much lighter than when it rolled off the factory floor. The way I would describe it, its more pepperminty....however today when doing repairs and sanding through the high build primer in spots to original paint which happened to be close to the new paint the colour looked almost identical. Maybe its just because it is so glossy and bright?

Anyway, the dash and inside is painted as mentioned before - a halogen light was shining on it in this pic which makes it look a lot less green than it is, looks nice though.

Today saw some repairs to various dents, chips etc after sanding back the high build primer which showed up problem areas. This is Steve who is now working for me a couple days a week - his help has been most welcomed as it means things can be finished a lot sooner.

After the basic repairs were done the body was prepped again and reprimed in high build primer. This will be rubbed back tomorrow and painted in colour.

Damo, do you think a Wednesday pickup would be possible? Another splitty arrives tomorrow for resto so room is going to be limited. Cheers mate

Al

Dasdubber ·

Well she is finally painted!

Being that I couldn't do it in the booth yet (if someone feels like giving me around $10K to finish it I'll happily accept!)....there was a bit of dust and the odd bug (one can be seen in this pic) that settled in the fresh paint.

The Devilbiss GTi Pro gun is working really well despite the underpowered compressor (if someone feels like giving me $5K for a second hand screw compressor I'll happily accept!)....nice and glossy off the gun.

The hoist is fantastic! (I won't go on about the cost of the hoist.....but people reading this can hopefully understand why such a paint job costs a bit, I'll happily work for half my current labour rate if someone wants to pay all my overheads) 🙂

The colour is more along the lines of the original (not quite as pepperminty as I first thought)....it is just much brighter and more glossy than the original.

The roof came out a treat (again I could have spent more time smoothing out the dents but the line had to be drawn somewhere (as per above discussions)).

Pic is a bit blurry unfortunately.

Now the hard and expensive part is out of the way Damo can finally work towards getting this beast back on the road (and on the strip hopefully!).

hey al

how u finding the PPG? did u use the Deltron or Cobra in the end?

steff..............

Dasdubber ·

Steff, this particular paint was just their single stage 2K range as they couldn't mix the Birch Green in a base coat. So far so good for the PPG (2 cars done in their solid 2K range) but no experience yet with the Delton or Cobra - although will be doing a quickie job on a mate's bay window in Cobra in the next few weeks so that will be a good test for the lower end products.

Looking forward to using their ceramic clears (but will wait till the booth is ready for that!).

Cheers again for your help to date.

dangerous ·

That turned out supoib Alan and Damo.
Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh (with a motor damo!)

Dasdubber ·

Thanks Dave 🙂

Although we didn't intend going this far (after all we started out only originally giong to do rust repair and not repainting.....then only painting the outside.....then only painting outside and underbonnet.....then outside, underbonnet, dash, door jambs.

Now after all that we were going to leave under the decklid and bonnet as is, but I just couldn't live with myself. Although each resto is different and I work towards the budget of the owner, at the end of the day I can't let something go out of the shop I wasn't happy with, thus I had to squirt some paint under the bonnet and decklid.

Tomorrow will see a bit of de-nibbing from dust specks, and a couple little runs to fix (can't wait for the lights when the booth is running so I can see what I am spraying properly!)

Damo will pick it up tomorrow night then I'm onto a trio of splits (different owners) - next to no rust repair in one (but a as high a show quality paint job as one can get), lots of rust repair in another (with no paint job at all = rat), and lots of rust repair in the third with a mid level paint job.

All on different budgets but all should be lots of fun....I love this job!
Al

ByronBug ·

Damo that is looking very smick!!...Alan again another beautiful example of your work...you guys must be so happy with it...Max is looking so fresh now...!! Judy

Dasdubber ·

Thanks Judy, Jace, Matt and others.

I'm pretty stoked with how Damo's bug has turned out given I didn't spend too much time on the body work (rust repair was 70% of the hours spent on the project). Damo seemed pretty chuffed, and although I'm sure he'll find some of the blemishes/nibs/small runs as he spends more time with it....hopefully his chuffness will remain for a while to come!

Damo arrived tonight with his brother to pick up the bug so we lowered it onto the pan and bolted it down.

So with this picture my involvement in Damo's resto is over, he can now update the thread as it progresses (c'mon mate, get that stonking type IV built will ya!)

Best of luck with the reassembly Damo, have fun!

guru ·

Nice job Alan.

I notice you painted this one & choptop with the guards
loosely fitted. Do you have any drama when your spraying with the overlap
from the curve of the guards to the flatness of the side panels?

Dasdubber ·

No dramas mate - just have to be more aware of the overlap when shooting the front quarter panels - each stroke is finished on the guard, so when I then shoot the guard I just do a quick pass on the edge that mates to the body.....thus avoiding runs in the quarters and guards.

I've been getting used to the new paint (PPG) and a relatively new gun (only shot a couple cars with it) so I'm getting a couple more "flow adjustment meters" (ie. runs) than I like, but fortunately in discrete places and relatively easily fixed.

vwsteve ·

these restos always end up a bigger job than first thought, lucky alan and i are vw nuts as anyone else wouldnt have given a sh#t and given it back to the owner with no paint underneath, always looks heaps better in and out,its hard to put a price on a good resto,on big jobs i would only doit for an hourly rate because of this, good work alan👍

koolkarmakombi ·

Is that paint a colour then clear or is it shiny paint straight off the gun?

Lovely work, I bet Damo slept in the shed last night 😉

Don't expect a call lost your number.

Just joking

hellbugged ·

........moved along at all Damo?

66deluxe ·

Yes brakes are done after caliper rebuild. AN fittings and fuel and oil lines are almost done. Engine is almost built just waiting on cylinders to be machined. Just a bit of electrical work and suspension alignment and we drive. Money has been tight over the last twelve months. I am aiming for Warwick.

hellbugged ·

ok good stuff........
66deluxe wrote:Money has been tight over the last twelve months. I am aiming for Warwick.
yes very much the case down this way too

66deluxe ·

Well I have got the bored and honed to 96mm original German cylinders back from the machine shop. All good i require a 2.5mm/0.100" shim under the cylinders to get 0.010" deckheight this along with the 0.040" step in the head will give me a cr of 9.5:1. Almost al AN fittings are now ready to install for fuel and oil lines.

vassy66T1 ·

Keep it going Damo

Would love to see it fire up 😵

hellbugged ·

👍.......keep us updated, pics always nice to look at too

66deluxe ·

Ok engine is done fuel lines are done. Waiting on a custom speed exhaust so we can fabricate some J pipes out of stainless. Wiring is last after all subsystems are in place. Hope i get it done for WSID in Feb.

vassy66T1 ·

hellbugged ·

Cool, will be good to have it out and about after all this time

Will make a real nice ride

57 oval ·

Up to about the same on my type 4 in the Oval, would be interested in seeing some photos of your exhaust set up. Is it a special fabrication or are they out there ready to buy? I was going to bring over a CSP python set but they are a bit rich by the time you get them to Aust. I have come up with a design and have started to fabricate my own but I am not a whole lot confident in the performance of the finished product, they will be bloody close to tunned length but would hate for it to sound shit

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Will be around tomorrow for a look. I'll give you a call before i head over mate.

Sides ·

Oh Damo.... gettin soooooo close now dude !!!

Some nice lookin bits in there too... like a few Mallory logo's 👍

The cable throttle setup... how'd you find installing and getting that dialled in ??? Not tried putting mine in yet ya see, so just trying to suss what's ahead of me for the Ghia ya see....

66deluxe ·

57 Oval only the exhaust is available at the moment but if it sounds and performs like the full type 1 system on Matt Berry's 58 "Bluey" i will be very happy. Apparantly vintage speed will have a complete type 4 into type 1 system available soon.

Sides i have still to hook up the cable linkage but i did install one on Raby's 2.7 litre type 4 dual cab, they are an awesome linkage pedal feel is very soft not hard like a cb linkage.

Brendan good thing you didn't come round cause the car is at Berry's place in cooroy.

66deluxe ·

Here's some more pics got all but three lines finished waiting on the fittings and yes i have about ten left over that i won't be using. The fittings are Phenix brand from USA sourced through Matt Berry Motorsports, they shit all over Earls and the like their all black fittings too i really hate the blue and red ones. The oil cooler is a dual fan Setrab cooler wasn't cheap but it fits, there was a trick to fitting that with the 5 bar kafer bar setup, but its in now and aint going nowhere. I have a feed and return line for the fuel system using stainless tube i ran it up the centre of the tunnel in the pan. So fuel goes from the tank to an inline disc style Russel filter straight into the Mallory fuel pump, then to the Mallory fuel filter this then goes into the rigid fuel lines in the pan and exits out the frame horn left side into another Russel inline fuel filter straight into one of two bulkhead fittings into the mallory fuel regulator then to the carbs any excess returns via bypass in regulator to the return line to tank, as i am running a golf master cylinder i was able to feed return line through original master cylinder resivoir hole in body to a brazed -6 an fitting in tank. So much braided lines to make but i figured out the tricks required to assemble them and actually enjoy making the lines now. My oil system runs a full flow system, which leaves the pump cover to a thermostat and returns to filter then back to engine, when oil is at temp the thermostat opens and allows oil to the cooler which has twin fans which are activated by temp swhitch at entry into thermostat. This has been a major achievement so now minor things are left to finish it off. Enjoy the pics.

I still reckon they are one of the best all round fitting Porche wheels. Nice offset, no spacers required.

Finally have received my new exhaust system. It is a Vintage Speed Exhaust type4 into type1 system. It's all stainless and fits very well, it is a good design especially in the pipes from the head, it provides good access to the nuts to tighten them on. Wiring should be complete this week.

What if i throw a brick?

Just been for another drive round the streets. It's great to drive and the brakes are just what every aircooled needs. Only issue i have now is the alternator is not charging, so i will get that rebuilt. I went to a local VW parts supplier on Northside of Brisbane and they don't have bosch alternators only China ones, having not seen one before i immediately noticed a bushing had fallen out. So i said thanks but no thanks. Anyone know a brilliant Auto electrician on the northside thats cool?

Engine is just getting better and better with each drive.

Pics or it didn't happen dude😂😂

66deluxe ·

Well the bug is settling in nicely the only complaint is the exhaust is a little loud only cause i keep driving flat out in it. Will take for a drive this arvy and test out the reworked Whitleline fron swaybar mounts they just hung down too low. I made new brackets and installed them reverse to the original design to get clearance back to front suspension. New alternator should be here thursday. Will also change break in oil to joe gibbs hr4 15-50.

66deluxe ·

Sorry haven't posted any pics yet i have been too busy driving it. I have been thinking about how many chinese made parts are in this resto and i can honestly say none whatsoever. Take out the vintage speed exhaust and shifter but their made in taiwan. So you can restore a VW with no china parts happy days. This is why it took so long to restore finding quality original parts. Oh hang on the pop outs are china. Shit.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Dude you get the ignition set up sorted? New coil with ballast resistor fix it?

matberry ·

What????....the Mallory let you down??????

coletrickle ·

oh one oh😘

66deluxe ·

No not fixed yet. The mallory seems to b overheating and cutting out. Think it needs ballast resistor. If that don fix it its 010 time.

vassy66T1 ·

MSD don't make a dizzy for it?

Burrelli ·

050 is the bosch dizzy I would pick till you sort the mallory.

From what I have read 050 is the german 009 of the type4 world. Good for short rod engines.

66deluxe ·

Burrelli wrote:050 is the bosch dizzy I would pick till you sort the mallory.

From what I have read 050 is the german 009 of the type4 world. Good for short rod engines.
True but i don't want to go looking for an 050 cause their hard to find and i could also run a stock vacuum advance type 4 dizzy without vacuum connected apparently that works good too. But i have a rebuilt 010 sitting here so i will try that if ballast resistor doesn't work on the mallory.

Other than ignition issues the engine just keeps getting better. cruizes at 110kph like nothing, right foot is hardly pressing the pedal. Hooked up the new speedo cable and now i know how fast i'm going its quite impressive.

Carter ·

damo, random questions - but what do you clean your cases with - could eat food off yours!

66deluxe ·

Carter wrote:damo, random questions - but what do you clean your cases with - could eat food off yours!
I use the parts cleaning room at work. Degrease, hot tank, plastic bead blast, hot tank, then wet bead blaster for the shine then pressure flush machine. About five hours work. This is fone with gallery plugs out.

Carter ·

haha that explains it! looking awesome, man

66deluxe ·

Ignition is fixed just required a ballast resistor from power to coil. Been doing some highway driving and it sits on 100kph and my foot is just on the throttle. So i have full travel on the go pedal. When i roll on the throttle at 100 it hits 150 real quick id say a minimum of five or less seconds and it just keeps accelerating the power does not drop off at all. The torque of the type 4 is amazing. Now to get it to Lakeside Raceway for some laps. Oh and the 944T brakes all round superb.

matberry ·

Great news mate. Now go do laps.... 🙂

Saving for a go pro camera as well.

Carter ·

how's the go pro saving going Damo, would love to see some cool in car stuff in addition to what you have!

66deluxe ·

Hmmm don't like this. I was driving and then couldnt get gears. Gearbox is ok but flywheel and crank are not. I figure that one should not use the flwheel bolt steel gasket with aftermarket flywheel bolts. The flywheel bolts came loose either from me dumping the clutch into second with high rpm or that the aftermarket bolts don't have the serrations under the head and didnt grip into the steel gasket. Crank looks saveable but flywheel might need replacing.

matberry ·

Bummer mate. Glad you found it before the crank got ruined

I am staying with type 4 power. The 2270 is just too nice an engine. The driveability and torque it makes is great. I can be doing 150kph and roll on the throttle and it just keeps pulling to higher speeds. I also love the fact its nearly idling at 60kph in fourth with an .89 4th and 3.88 r&p. brilliant engine.

matberry ·

I'm biting my tongue....type one eats type 4 as far as I'm comcerned.

Boozo ·

this is a bit of an old dig up, how did/does this thing go around lakesdie? what lap times? I love that track, have been around it many a time...but never in a bug.
