Water pumper observation...they appear snobby when it comes to \"the wave\"....

Schmoburger ·

We are all familiar with the VW wave I'm sure... however I have observed that when it comes to watercooled dubbers.... they just don't do it... snobs!

Today I was driving into nowra in the kombi, and a Golf appeared behind me.... tafter tailgating for about 5 minutes, they just shot passt without so much as a glance upwards... like some disgruntled Kia driver! 🙁

After that... not too long after... I passed a T4 van.... I kind of expected an EV driver might carry on the tradition most commonly excercised by Kombi drivers... but now... total ignorance again.

30 min later.. on the way back out of Nowra, I passed blue NB on the highway... again no wave... this time i figured i'd give a wave... and the driver semed to deliberately avert her eyes!!! Agh!!! :jesus

I did however pass a an orange bay on the highway... in Fallsy... and got a very hearty wave out the winda from quite a distance... which I returned as heartily as is possible with closed widows. 😂

Dunno if it's just the waterpumpers that i come across that are snobs or a if it is some kind of pumper-wide cliqueiness...or an anti-air conspiracy! :P 🥷

Whatever the case... Im yet to be snobbed by an aircooled dubber! 🙂

EDIT: grrrr...damn ninja smiley. :vader

those new vw,s are just a normal car to the owners .the vw badge does not mean any thing:cry.

Joel ·

its been like that for ages
ur lucky to get a wave from a NB owner unless ur driving one urself

it really only seems to be old beetles and kombi owners that wave and the occasional type3 around here

Joel

blutopless2 ·

i have found that it happens both ways.... some watercooled people around our area wave when we do and some dont... just give you "that look".. but have also found that aircooled people are the same... some do some dont.

REALLY ????????????

mscabrio ·

I am so over this debate. I drive a new bug and get snobbed off all the time by air cooled drivers despite me waving first. You just can't generalise

ian.mezz ·

really if you are going to buy a new car , maybe buy a toyota , keep the old vw for the club runs ,it takes all the fun out of it when your drive a new car.:puke
that is just my way of thinking.

you have got to be joking??? a fricken toyota??? and how does this support VW??? and no it doesnt take all the fun out of cruises to drive a new car..

ian.mezz ·

yes it does ,you dont get to sit around and talk about what broke on way to show, and how you fixed it with a bit of wire.the new beetle, you just hear about how much parts and services cost and how many things got fixed under warranty and it drives just like a toyota.:cry

pete wood ·

even aircooled owners don't seem to wave at me in my buggy. 😢

That said, lots of little kids do!!!😀

twoguns ·

its a 'classic, i feel you wave!' it is an acknowledgment fo your undieing love and support of hte old and no matter what you still proudly stand by your car. a brotherhood.

sorry but i dont wave to plastic water cool either.:P

i suppose the new dubs would wave to other new dubs. but i wonder howmany would reciprocate.

i also ahve a skyline but i dont wave to other skylines or imports. its more a second choice transport.

now bikes wave (nod) there is a long history of the bike nod. its a mutal repsect that 'yep- still here- still standing- having fun'

Man, i wave too everyone if they got a cool car old or new, I got 4 aircooled dubs and a 04' Golf Gti, If people don't wave back thats their problem. I still Make the signal for a truckie to blow his airhorns, i'm 31 now been doin that since i can remember, you just gotta have fun and laugh, cheers Damo

Schmoburger ·

hehe....who can honestly say they don't feel the urge to raise there clenched fist to the headliner when passing a truck? 😀

Midlife crisis ·

Well I have to say most water/air cooled lated model VW owners just are not into the the VW lifestyle, BUT the are some really cool modern VWers out there and they have even wavied before I have a chance to wave first :-).

We wave at all VW's new or old, Buggy or kombi.

Marc & Kath

P.S. Igor the BAJA sometimes flashes his lights at other VW's aswell LOL

Joel ·

ive noticed on dads bontrike that all the other bikes even harleys give a nod as a u pass
must be the thing with bikers

saw a t shirt once JUST BECAUSE I DRIVE A VW DOESNOT MAKE ME YOUR FREIND made me laught

killakornkobb ·

in my water pumper i always try to make eye contact before a wave, and a lot of aircooled rides, dont even look my way.

i found many aircoolers to be snobs aswell..

even in my water pumper with the rego "VDUBBA" i dont get much

BenettonVW ·

It's wierd when you have both, as some of the people above obviously seem to, as you get different reactions for different cars, from the same people!

Some water drivers don't acknowledge other water drivers either, so it isn't a(yet another) air v. water debate, it is simply that that particular individual didn't buy it for the 'legend' that is VW, but it was the most suitable car for their $$. That easy.

However, some of us, buy these cars to drive a daily VW, and aren't mechanically smart or impatient to drive their old one everyday. Imagine trying to drive Nellie everyday?!?! Bugger that.

I hope that explains it. It is most definately not an us v. them debate. There is enough assholes with other car brands that hang shit on us to fill the world already, so we don't need to be divided on this as well!!

Plus.... it's getting old.

blutopless2 ·

ian.mezz wrote:and it drives just like a toyota.:cry

um.. no... they dont.

buzzbug ·

Schmoburger I promise that i will give you a wave when i see you driving around town.

As a matter of fact i saw your Kombi at the shops on the weekend, looks really nice.

Lee.

Special ·

i was sitting in a shop car park and a new beetle owner came up for a chat!

surely their not all that bad :P

PrettyBlueBug ·

I always try to make eye contact before giving 'the wave', whether it's an old or new Beetle, a Kombi or anything in between with a VW logo. :P Don't often get waves back anymore, even from people in the old Dubs who DO make eye contact... I just take it that they're jealous! 😂

mscabrio ·

ian.mezz wrote:and it drives just like a toyota.:cry
Clearly you have never driven one!

It definitely wasnt attempting to start another sad tired and old air vs. toilet debate....simply pointing out a an observation I had made... that many waterpumperswouldn't look at you with an optical barge pole. 🙂

Hehe...glad you like the old girl buzzbug...hehe... If I see a low bug scraping up Kinghorne St any time I'll be certain to wave also! :P 👍 'Onya!

Is your bug a creamy color mate?... I saw a pretty low cream bug at the lights near Machonnachies a while back... :bounce

Couldn't have said it better....... when I drive my new beetle that I have no spirit and should just stick to every other plastic car on the road but if I drive my oval then I am suddenly cool ???????

Schmoburger ·

well...i would never drive an NB.. in my honest opinion they look crap and are made very dodgy indeed...but thats just my opinion, and I respect and wave to there drivers, cos its still a VW all the same, and VW's heart was in the right place when they designed the new bug... and I wouldnt say a word against the Passat. a VW is still a VW...

its not cool. the wave is about your resiliance to stick out the good and the bad of driving the original. not selling out to the plastic comfort!!! and thinking that you still are part of history.:P

shaihulud ·

This not waving anymore situation is very old.

My first Beetle was a 1958 in 1964. Then every Beetle and Kombi waved all the time. It slowly died out and was disappearing before the water pumpers in the form of the Golf came on the scene.

I wouldn't look upon this as an H2O v noH2O thing. It's older than that.

I would like to see it come back, but I now only wave to NBs and noH20s only even when I was driving my buggy.

I'm not being snobby about driving a noH2O. I just don't think that the everday H20 driver even knows about the VWs wave to each other thing.

Those of you here who drive H20s. Please don't get precious and sensitive about this posting. It's not personal. It's a general observation based on years of experience.

shaihulud ·

deluxe66. What's the signal for a truckie to blow the horn?

There used to be a signal to tell other truckies that you are a fellow truckie, but it has not worked for me for a while.

It's to flash the indicators one flash left and one flash right several times.

It used to get a truckie who is hassleing you to pass on a country road or highway to ease off a bit and to not tailgate you so closely.

fekkinell ·

I don't know what everyone's carrying on about... I always wave and get waved at in my kombi. I don't necessarily wave to beetles (new or old) simply cos i love kombi's and what they represent, and that is where my connection lies. I wave to another kombi cos they are a brother/sister who loves the freedom that the van represents... I also wave to backpackers in shitbanger hiace's, taragos, and various other claptrap excuses for vans painted up in crazy colours... because of what they represent.

If a beetle waves at me its "ok cool... you're waving cos im in a veedub" and i wave back. If a kombi waves its "KOMBI BROTHER... lets go camping sometime" 🙂

And above all, I don't get offended when modern VW's dont wave... Golf's, Transporters, Polo's, etc, are all good cars... but they don't have the soul of the truly original VW's. The New Beetle i think is the only modern VW to stand out... To me i think the only 'beetley' thing about it, is its name.... But its a cool car in its own right... Even if they called it the VW Turtle, it would still be a cool car and id wave at it 🙂

But hey... if anyone at all on the road wants wave at me, im only too happy to wave back 🙂

PrettyBlueBug ·

Fekkinell, I think I've seen your Bus a few times, but always from a distance and then you turn off... atleast I think it's your Bus, Canterbury road usually about 5:30pm or so? 🙂

selling out???? really?? part of history??? noooo... just the future of VW. :thumb

twoguns ·

hahaha. but its not about the future, its about preserving and enjoying the history.

it is easy to go buya new car for its comfort and safety and reliability and so forth.

but the wave is the acknowledgment of the story, the pain. teh wonder if i will make the eight hour jorney to xyz, sweating on a 37 degree summers day wondering if your mtoor is coping, playing guess that smell. and then of course teh people you meet with their own stories of driving an opd veedub!!!

fekkinell ·

PBB.... could be me... i study in hawthorn and usually cross canterbury road coming home 🙂

PrettyBlueBug ·

YAY!! Then I've seen you and your lovely orange Bus. Can't wait to be able to give you a wave one day in my PBB!! :P

Nah mate mine is almost the same colour as yours. Number plates are LON510. I usually have a wooden roof rack on but not at the moment.

I'll just not participate when in our NB

Maybe NB drivers have stories to share also?? I'll still wave if I see you!! :P

right back at ya!...
others may just cop a different sort of wave! LOL :P

squizy ·

Wes - it doesn't make someone less of an enthusiast just because they drive a NB. The wave is more than the pain of having something old, it's an acknowledgement that we're both driving the same marque. If some NB and water pumpers don't wave - fine - but don't crucify those that do wave. And when I had my FTO, I would have waved at you in your Skyline. LOL.

Hehe.. I'll definitely keep an eye out for ya... Im notorious for not seeing other people i know on the road... if i dont see you, just abuse me til i look around hehe 😵‍💫
