the khumo powerstars on my Lbug at the moment were first fitted to my 71 superbug just b4 i got it in '96
most of my jobs ive always had company cars so my vws dont rack up many Kms so they're only half worn but i noticed last time i washed it they are getting tiny cracks in the side walls
at over 10 years old i think they will probably disintergrate b4 i wear them out but i dont wanna drive on unsafe tyres either
does anyone know if tyres have a safe working life span?

if they have cracks in the sidewall then id be looking at new tyres.
tyres definatly have a life span.

The tyres that were on my Bug when I bought it were new but had been living in a shed for who knows how long. They had fine cracks in the sidewalls and a few between the tread pattern too. Needless to say I bought new tyres! 🙂

yes tyres have a lifespan... (can't tell you what it is as i'm sure it varies from manufacturer and tyre type etc ) most are used enough to wear out the tread before the tyres degrade and need replacing.
I have seen tyres around 10 years old showing signs of degradation and hardening, hence losing performance.
I would suggest replacing the tyres, they may not fail for a few more years but you will probably notice a lack of grip etc as the tyres get harder.
Besides... the tyres on your car are pretty important to look after and keep in good condition.. why risk it?

one of the tyre retailers here suggested that tyre life is around 3-4 years
the rubber hardens and traction especially in the wet becomes an issue even with plenty of tread
