I am looking for a bug with a ball joint front end, and IRS in the rear.... What year/s should I be looking at ?
will they have disk breaks in the front, and 4 stud bolt pattern ?
Bizarre ·
Generally speaking you are after a 1976 pan
It was the only one to be
* IRS
* ball joint beam
* disc brakes
* manual
* 4 stud
The "preferred" choice is a semi auto pan which is as above but needs a clutch tube put in.
The benefit is it is pre 1973 and ADR an all that

I am looking at one at the moment that has a ball joint front end, and IRS in the rear however its a 5 stud....Would that be a 68 - 71 ?
Bizarre ·
Ok - out of my depth
i could be a Suth Efricun import or more likely modified.
Does it have disc brakes??
I thought all ball joints had discs??
Does it have adapters??

Hehe.
Mmmm, bj and IRS. Me gots that one. 1969 1500 bug. Has a disk brake front end. Is a semi auto though. (NOT FOR SALE THOUGH). Unless u got an insane trade/offer.
Cause i just luv the lil beauty.
But anywho, purpose of this comment is to say that take a look at the 69s as well as the 76s, semi autos are very easy to convert to full manual if its not ur cup of tea.
😀

I thought the same that all b/j had disks, the old guy selling it said it has drums...
Indi ·
That is what I thought, but it has a clutch. Could it be a modified semi auto?
Anthiron ·
ive seen drum brake balljoint bugs. a freind had one a while ago.
bajachris88 ·
hmm. My mates got a 68 bug, tis ball joint, has drums. I think the disk brakes came in around 69 and up. Don't hold me on that.
If it has a clutch, then yeah, its not a semi auto. (otherwise it would have a torque converter). The only difference between a manual and a semi auto is just that they apparently don't have a clutch tube nor pedal, and don't have the clutch assembly. All that is needed to convert is to put in a clutch tube, swap a few bits (like the pedal assembly) and replacing the torque convertor + auto tranny with manual gear.
Its not that much of a mod. Only mod is the clutch tube. the rest is just swapping gear.

Have you physically looked at it, or just discussing to buy it ?
A lot of people call swingaxle beetles IRS as they are not aware of the differences.

Australian 1300 type 1 '68 onwards had ball joint front end with drum brakes and swing axle rear end. All 4 stud.
Europe and USA had ball joint front and 5 stud drums around '65-'66
Hope this helps!
Cheers Dave

I haven't seen it. The guy had no idea, so I had him look at the front and rear and explain what he saw---
he saw the "boomerang shape" of the ball joint---- and the "cylinder that goes through the spring plate, and sticks out a few inches..."

so it's probably a king/link front, swing axle rear beetle............................sorry for the bad news!

like what rugged said - i bought a 73 1300 standard with bj front end with drums and swingaxle.

this is just a rough guide from memory so correct me if im wrong
from 68 to early 70 only 1 bug was availble the 1500 in manual and semi auto
both had 4 stud disc brakes but only semi auto was irs
from early 70 vw sold 2 beetles the 1300 pov model it had drum front brakes and swing axle it ran till early 75 and the deluxe beetle till 12/70 was the 1500 which got replaced in 1/71 by 1600 superbug S which got replaced by 1600 superbug L in early 73
2 parts beetles i used were 12/70 1500 and a 1/71 Sbug the vins were 26 apart, both have gone to beetle heaven now

it is completly correct to call swingaxle rear end irs... it is indepandant rear suspension... but it is only single joint per side not the two links per side like "irs". 🤪
