flywheels aint flywheels?

Anthiron ·

i took out my 1600 on sunday from the baja to put my 1776 in.

the flywheels are different.

the 1600 has a very new flywheel with 109 teeth
has a quite small clutch on it.

flywheel on the 1776 has a flywheel also with 109 teeth however a different PCD for the clutch bolt holes.

correct me if im wrong but didnt the later 12 volt flywheels have 130 teeth?

so that means both of these flywheels are 6 volt but different???

fitted up a different clutch to the 1776. bigger than the other clutch.

as they both have 109 teeth i assume they use the same ring gear so they will both mesh fine with my starter?

my main worry is that although my bellhousing has been clearanced i will now be running a bigger clutch. will this need more clearancing?

I think the later type3 6volt flywheel used the larger 12 volt clutch

Remember that ANY Type 3 6 volt was pre any 12 volt size. Be aware that there was the 1200 (40 HP), 1300, 1500 (Type 3) and 1600 6 volt flywheels which had the same gear teeth but different clutch diameters. Then there was the 12 volt ones but as I'm only familiar with the Type 3 range, I can't comment on the clutch sizes on the Beetle range. Type 3 engines had 7" (178mm) and 7.8" (198mm) which wer nominally 180 mm and 200 mm.

well engine is in now.

havent run it but u can turn it over by hand so looks all good.

i wasnt aware that the bolt pattern changed through the engine sizes that explains it then.
