engine wont start..... (ok now it starts but wont run smooth)

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/50681/engine-wont-start-ok-now-it-starts-but-wont-run-smooth

ok iv got the 1776 bolted in. fuel spout in carby is squirting fuel, electrics are hooked up the right way. engine turns over and splutters ever so slightly but wont fire.

what should i be checking?

Nick

check last post for update

Bizarre ·

timing

petrol, compression and timing = MUST work

You have petrol
I "assume" you have compression

It HAS to be timing
First check 1 -4- 3 -2

2nd check 1-4-3-2

Check for spark. Plugs fouled??

Anthiron ·

compression isnt fantastic. alot less than my old engine.

plugs are brand new, leads are on in rite order.

Anthiron ·

it wouldnt spin the starter if my battery was flat and everything is connected properly. i only finished hooking everything up today beleive me its all on.

Then it should work. Did you set the timing statically/check for spark?? Go over it again, like you said it should work so it will be something VERY obviouse.Check the dizzy isn't 180 out.......:alien

Bizarre ·

Havent blown a fuse??

You have 12V at the coil??

Anthiron ·

dissy is definatly in the right way around. timing set to 9 degrees BTDC for the 98 octane fuel, how should i check for spark?

as i said engine doesnt have awesome compression. compared to my recently rebuilt 1600 its bugger all. but wouldnt it at least sort of fire and run really badly with lots of blowby if it had low compression?

Anthiron ·

ive got 12v at the coil. checked that when i set the timing🙁

Craig Torrens ·

So what is the compression in psi ?

Checking for spark at the points (assuming this has been done as you have checked timing!) then with one lead off the spark plug earth it against the body (leaving about a 3-5mm gap between lead and body) and crank the motor, you should see a good spark. You will need two people for this.

what happens when you pour fuel down the throat of the carby and then crank it.

Anthiron ·

i dont know the compression in PSI, havent tested it as the compression tool i have doesnt appear to work at all.

i took the top of the carby before trying to start it and filled the float bowl up to make sure it had fuel. havent tried pouring fuel straigh down the throat. ill recruit someone to help me tomorrow and try the spark earth thing and the pouring fuel down the throat.

there is definatly spark at the points, ignition system is all off my old engine which was running fine.

76camper ·

sounds like fuel is the problem. Are you absolutely positive the timing isnt 180 out? Have had this prob a few times... really annoying. Go and buy a can of aero start or 'start ya bugger' or something like that and spray a fair bit down the carby throat. If you dont got any of that petrol shud do.

ancientbugger ·

Maybe that generator is stuffed and not putting out any volts.

Special Air Service ·

Check needle & seat In carby make sure its not flooding. Had similar problem the other day had spark, had fuel wouldnt fire at all, yep to much fuel, big bit of shit inside needle & seat.
Cheers
Brendan

Anthiron ·

needle and seat is brand new. does the coil run off the generator and not the battery for start up?

Bizarre ·

coil would run off the battery

Genny would not be up to speed until it started

Anthiron ·

lets say i have the dissy in wrong somehow.

i set the tappets on the engine by turning engine till rotor button was almost at no1 firing position notch on dissy then lining up TDC on the pulley and crack in the crank case. then setting tappets for #1 and turning 180 degrees backwards etc.

so if my dissy is out then ive set the valves out of whack too.....

how can i check that the dissy is in right and then re set tappets without using the rotor button and firing position notch on the dissy?

76camper ·

Well, its either 180 out or its in. So when you crank the engine over by hand until its fired #1 (rotor pointing to that lead) then take off the #1 cylinder rocker cover. Then both tappets on the #1 cylinder should be closed ie can set the clearances.

I doubt if you put the rotor in wrong you would have noticed that one or more of the tappets wernt out and figured something was wrong so im guessing that rotor is right. Double check the firing order--> sounds like a fuel problem to me. Try teh fuel/ aerostart down the carby throat method and see if she will fire up.
good luck

Anthiron ·

ok thanks guys

Anthiron ·

just re checked all tappet etc and they are all set. dissy appears to be in the right position.

when i crank it for a bit light wispy grey smoke comes from the exhuast:jesus

Anthiron ·

any ideas on smoke?

Anthiron ·

ok as the muirs book says. ive checked coil by taking lead off at the dissy end and holding next to body and cranked engine by hands. no spark at all.

is this a good way to check? do u need to use starter motor to crank engine to get an accurate result?

engine has fuel as spark plugs are wet when pulled after cranking the engine.

Anthiron ·

ok ive got a good spark at the points. so coil is prolly fine.......this is really pissing me off...

hellbugged ·

have you got spark at the plug end of the leads tho?

Anthiron ·

unfortunatly i dont have a mate handy to turn the key while i hold the lead. spoke to craig on the fone and he reckons cranking the engine by hand isnt gonna be enough to generate a decent spark.

Anthiron ·

ok ive got a nice blue spark at the coil and good orange spark at the plug end of the leads.

ahhhh i was hoping it was a dodgy coil just so i would know lol

Anthiron ·

ok i just re set all the spark plug gaps .....no 1 and 2 were possibly a bit too wide to spark.

tried it. after a couple of goes it fired up blew a bit of smoke and backfired then stopped but it ran!!!!!!!

Craig Torrens ·

naughty naughty, you said you set the spark plug gaps !!!

c'mon you are so close!

Anthiron ·

i did set them......i set them at 027 i have reset them to 025 with better results. both are within spec for the engine but 027 must have been just a tad too wide.

carby is probobly wayyyy out so ill have a go at getting that right and see how i go

Bizarre ·

27 thou or 25 thou wont matter a rats arse

the fact it backed fired might suggest timing??
Is this your same dizzy??

I would be thinking leads not on propperly??

The smoke i am guessing was white??
It would just be all the unburnt fuel you have pumped in there

Anthiron ·

oh well whether it was the plugs or not it started after i did that ha ha.

smoke was grey/white engine hasnt got great compression remember....bit of blow by.

have just re set timing to 7.5 degrees and set the small screw on the 34pict to 2.5 turns out.

i wont start it again tonite or i might get a noise complaint but tomorrow hopefully ill be able to get it to run a bit smoother.

also just put the fuel pump from my 1600 on it because the pump wasnt working

Anthiron ·

ok now ive gotten it started.

starts fairly easy now.

blew the cobwebs out.

ok the exhaust for #3/4 gets very hot and the exhuast is hot as it exits the cannon.

the exhuast for #1/2 gets slightly warm and the exhuast gas is barely above room temp.

have to keep the engine at about 1800 revs to keep it running and if u pump the pedal it backfires or if u take foot off pedal suddenly it backfires

i pulled the 1 and 2 plugs and both were oily.

i have spark at these leads......why wont it run even? dissy cap perhaps?

pod ·

sounds like an air leak somewhere ,usually the cause of backfires🙁

Bizarre ·

Could also be blocked idle jet or circuit.

ie the have to rev above 1800 and the sudden back off.

Dont like the sound of the cool gas on 1 n 2

Sounds like they are not firing.

76camper ·

definantly worth doing a compression test. If youve got valve problems or just worn rings on one or more cylinder it wont run evenly or smooth without major compensations in power and economy. Do a compression test, sounds like your not getting enough compression on 1 and 2 to get a good combustion. Does the exahust sting your nose or smell rich (dont take too many whiffs or you will die from the carbon monoxide). Put ya hand infront of the 1 and 2 exhaust and pull it away after a few seconds and smell ya hand for petrol...

good luck

kevo ·

if it was me...
id just rip off the head on the 1 and 2 side, check for cracks between inlet and exhaust valves, this is VERY common on TP 1600 engines
replace rings while the access is there, better yet, do all 4 piston and rings cos if its black and oily ya arnt burning the fuel... or the oil sliding up the sides of the barrel! if ya do all 4 cylinders then ya know ya got a reliable engine

but seriously, theres no other way around fixing your car if rings of valve wear is the problem

just rebuilt my sisters 71' 1600 tp n it wasnt hard at all, n i dont have a job in mechanics or nething, turned over 1st crank too

kevo

Anthiron ·

will try to do compression test 2moro. and double check the valves and try differnet plugs etc.

Anthiron ·

oh and it stopped backfiring so it was prolly someting in idle circut which got blown out.

Bizarre ·

Does it idle ok now???

Anthiron ·

nope still wont idle.......but it appears to be running on 2 cylinders so i dont really blame it......it does however feel like it wants to idle but just cant keep it up with only the 2 cylinders.

ill pull the rocker covers off tomorrow and have a good look at the rocker action and see if i can pic something up.

Anthiron ·

ok.

appears i have a cracked head.

made itself obvious today with raw fuel leaking out.

1776 is dropped and 1600 hopefully with be back in and running tomorrow.

hopefully....

Anthiron ·

1600 is back in. as of about 2 hours ago.

damn it feels nice to drive my car again!!!!!

it would have been 2 weeks tomorrow.

already had someone tell me how cool it was and someone tell me it was "crazy" as in im insane having huge tires on the back lol and i only took it for a 10 minute drive with a couple of stops.

karmen ·

anth
get a mate or the racq

if i was closer i would be there

read the book on how to make friends and influence ppl....

Anthiron ·

i dont understand bernie? what do i need a mate or racq for?

pod ·

he means for the tow home the cheeky bugger:vader

Anthiron ·

ha ha i must be dumb.

a tow home from where?

car wasnt playing up i was the one who took the engine out and put the 1776 in and it didnt work out so the 1600 is now back in.........

wasnt stranded or anything

Craig Torrens ·

check the head torque on the 1776, probably a loose head !!

Good to see the beast back on the road :thumb

ancientbugger ·

Nick if you can get the engine round to my place we'll pull it apart and have a go at it, as the wife can't understand how I can drive to Caloundra to play with a veedub engine but can't go to Maroochydore to go shopping with her😂

Anthiron ·

ha ha.

should be down on wednesday to take some things down to dads place and get those wheels for you.

might leave the 1776 where it is at the moment its sitting in the corner punished:vader

Anthiron ·

oh and bring your tools back:P
