It's actually a period accessory specially designed to fit the beetle bonnet shape(simply put it in a pre 67 bonnet, and you will see what I mean).

very rare in oz
usually come in a set of 3 different sizes
great pick up worth $$$$$$$$$
more readily available in germany(still rare though)

I collect old leather suitcases and bags.. That one you've got is a beauty (although not my style) if its as Jim described, then you've done well..

I normally find mine on rubbish collection days.. A few weeks ago, I found this humungous leather strapped and wooden bound travel case probably circa 1940-50.. Would look great on a VW roof.. If anyone wants it (unrestored) they can pick it up from me in Bondi..

I've got a pic of one of those under the bonnet of a bug. Always thought how special it would be to find one. Congrats.
