What is your favourite cd/album of all time and why?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/51020/what-is-your-favourite-cdalbum-of-all-time-and-why

koolkarmakombi ·

I will start..

My favourite album of all time is

Underworld Dubnobassmyheadman.

Why? It was so ahead of its time. I love musical journeys. The latest i-poppets with their 50 zillion gig pods will never understand the journey of a whole album. I was partaking of lots of nightlife, was single and heard 'Dark and Long' at an afterparty and bought the cd the next day. The journey still gives me goosebumps and I have to listen to 'cowgirl' really really loud.

I am a huge underworld fan but this was their first post electro rock album and it certainly helped change my view of the world.

It is a close cass however as The Cure- Disintergation was remixed as 'Mixed up' and is a very close second.

who's next?

kkk

Volkswagenboy ·

AC/DC, BallBreaker!
-Staggers.

Cam ·

Ocean Machine - Devin Townsend. Can't really explain why, it just hits the spot😎

koolkarmakombi ·

Echoes - The Best Of Pink Floyd.... cos it's Pink Floyd and they're the best :P

moonlite6t6beetle ·

Room on Fire - The strokes. Catchy, Great guitar work and well delivered.
or
Muse - Absolution. SO ahead of its time

Volkswagenboy ·

koolkarmakombi wrote:Why?

Because it's AC/DC, and they are one of the best groups I remember from when I was younger!
-STAGGERS.

boxofrabbits ·

Junta -Phish (amazing acoustic improv work)

Daisies for the Galaxy - The Eels (i just love the eels)

or

Hot Rats - Frank Zappa (Peaches En' Regalia simply owns)

farkengruven ·

Bat out of hell - Meatloaf. Why? It just is.

Volkswagenboy ·

Ooh yeah! Meatloaf! Don't mind Meatloafs Hot Patoody (From Rocky Horror Picture Show).
-Staggers.

Anthiron ·

wish u were here - Pink floyd

if u have heard the album then i shouldnt have to explain why.

ancientbugger ·

These Foolish Things-Bryan Ferry .......a certain time of my life when it fitted.
Jailbreak-Thin Lizzie ...around the same time..Christ I live in the past!

pod ·

english settlement by xtc ,just picks me up whilst i`m at work ,i chuck the cassette in the player and groove along:thumb

squizy ·

New Order - Substance. A collection of all that is good from the Hacienda.

helbus ·

Nikki Webster - Strawberry Kisses. 😂

Schmoburger ·

Let's see... would be one of the following..

"Forever Blue", by Chris Isaac
"Woodface", by Crowded House
"Four-Way Street", by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
"Spellbound", by Split Enz
"The Hollies- Greatest Hits", by The Hollies
"The Beatles, 1962-1966 (the Red Album)", and "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Cub Band", by the Beatles

"Dark Side of the Moon" and "Momentary Lapse Of Reason", by Pink Floyd
"Dire Straits", by...hmm.. funnily enough.. Dire Straits! 😂

I find it hard to choose a favourite between them LOL... so there they all are! 👍

Starbug ·

speaking of musical journeys koolkarma, i know exactly what you mean!!!
(dubnobasswithmyheadman is one of my favourite albums too! many an early evening and early morning spent with that album... and ive heard some awesome remixes of cowgirl at a rave and a few doofs... its one of their best tracks!)

i know its not everyones cup of tea, and as a matter of fact most people probably dont even know this type of music exists, but Identified Flying Object by The Pleiadians is possibly the best, nay, penultimate piece of goa trance ever recorded, and just happens to be my favourite album of all time.

if mozart were alive and making music today, he would have made this album... the progressions, layers, textures and SOUNDS on this album are enough to make one religious under the right circumstances, and are still truly amazing when the circumstances are of a more mundane nature 😀

the shortest track on this album is 8 minutes and 20 seconds long, so you had better make sure you have somewhere comfy with some trippy lights on while you take this journey 😀 😀 😀

second would have to be Welcome to the Monkey House by the Dandy Warhols, just because they are so damn fun to sing along to!!

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON..............Pink Floyd

But hey Schmoburger......U have surprised me with your choices......thought U might be a (c)rapper.:thumb

Schmoburger ·

PAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!... RAPPER???... HAHHHAA...AU CONTRAIRE!!! DONT MAKE ME PUKE DC!!! 😂 :puke

I hate rappers.... in fact...I hate ALL modern pop music... much more comfortable kicking back and listening to the Beatles, BOC, Dire Straits and Neil Sedaka...hehe... :bounce

that said... I do like some of what comes out of the modern alternative scene... the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Arctic Monkeys, Shihad, Polyphonic Spree etc... 👍

pod ·

Schmoburger wrote:I hate rappers.... in fact...I hate ALL modern pop music... much more comfortable kicking back and listening to the Beatles, BOC, Dire Straits and Neil Sedaka...hehe... :bounce
now thats something i like too ,you can actually understand what they are singing:thumb

buzzbox ·

The Stooges' first album.
Why?
On the first spin, I couldn't stop laughing because it was so berserk.
Still my desert island disc after almost 20 years. Knocked 'days of future passed' off the shelf in two minutes.
But if I could take a few,
*Dave Graney with the White Buffaloes 'My Life on the Plains'
*Phoenix 'united'
*Blue Cheer 'outsideinside'
*best of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
*Air 'Moon Safari'
*Luscious Jackson 'fever in fever out'

And I'd try to squeeze in Winerot's Tim buckley album too🙂 that's a beauty!

[ Edited on 17-4-2006 by buzzbox ]

ancientbugger ·

I wouldn't under normal circumstances admit to liking Neil Sedaka but I've got a couple of his albums..but keep it to yourselves. Also if anyone has heard of him I would love to get "1000 volts of Holt" and "2000 volts of Holt" by John Holt , he done reggae covers of some classic songs, if anyone gets the chance listen and your ears will be forever in your debt!

amazeer ·

Volkswagenboy1 wrote:Because it's AC/DC, and they are one of the best groups I remember from when I was younger!
-STAGGERS.
I love it when 19 year olds talk about when they were younger! second time today I've heard that.

I love 40 Licks, the Rolling Stones best of thing. So many classics.

Che Castro ·

Agree with a lot of the stuff above, underworld, cure, new order. Definitely agree with the thing about an album being a journey, you really have to listen to a whole album in one sitting rather than shuffling between singles on your iPod.

Somersault soundtrack - Decoder Ring
Trainspotting Soundtrack - Various
Transformer - Lou Reed
The Last Beautiful Day - New Buffalo
This is it - The Strokes
Ágætis byrjun - Sigur Ros
OK Computer - Radiohead
Funeral - The Arcade Fire

h ·

Pet Sounds - Beach Boys
yep my all time fave i would have to say..
just a pity i wasnt around in that era..

Schmoburger ·

Yeh..wish I were around then...hehe...would have fitted in much better! 😂

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

new order - blue monday
johhny cash - ring of fire
john coltrane - blue train or my favorite things
ramones -rock and roll high school
elvis presley -his latest flame
john lennon -watching the wheels
roy orbision -in dreams
david bowie -ziggy stardust

cause these songs are the soundtrack of my life

shaihulud ·

Carmina Burana Carl Orff
Il Mio Canto Libero Lucio Battisti
Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd
Rocky Horror Picture Show Movie sound track
1812 Overture Tchaichovski

That's only a few that come to mind now.

How's that for an eclectic mix?

Scarlet ·

My fave new band... My Chemical Romance....like a thrash punk mixed with bands like Muse and Radiohead.... taking a few extra steps... so they dony sound generic!

Some faves of all time........
Supergrass- self titled

Matthew Sweet-Girlfriend
REM-Document
Soundgarden-Superunkown
Billy Bragg-workers playtime
Del Amitri-waking hours

Scarlet wrote:Think Hilltop Hoods are the Goods.... first legit Hip hop act that has an authentic Aussie flavour
Amen! 👍

And before you say it DC... it is Aussie hip-hop, not crappy yank rap... so therefore I am not contradicting myself in any way! :P 😂

AmandaluvsMaurice53 ·

i feel so young rite now...
who is pink floyd & meat loaf????
ive heard there names but have never listened to them.
my dad has got me hooked on cat stevens, U2, R.E.M, Ed Kuepper, AC/DC

but the best album would have to be blink 182, i am so hooked on this band and so cut they broke up! anuva band would have to be U2!!!

empi ·

Air Moon Safari , not just for the cool Split kombi/space shuttle in the inlay card but this did sway the vote a little
Rammstein (Just for Cam) coz its German and if you drive a slammed black veedub you gotta have german heavy metal thumpin out of it ,coz looks tuff!
Gorillaz , yes coz it has a manx on the cover...
Sound track to Dazed and confused (esp lowrider) but fits the era of car and is cool

StenGuns ·

I can believe I agree with DC but..

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Talking "ahead of it's time" this album appeared in 1973 and (correct me if I'm wrong) spent 30+ years in the charts!

In the old(ish) days, quadrophonic hifi was the state of the art. Put on Floyd. Turn out the lights. light the J and lie down in the centre of the room with a quad HiFi setup.. Talk about journey!

AmandaluvsMaurice53 ·

hmm stenguns glad to hear im not the only one that used to listen to albums
that way, every now & again i would do this now but with 2 teenagers roaming
around the house & bagging their dad over the way i listen to music its getting harder.
pink floyd, ac/dc, deep purple, & so many more this was the only way to listen to vinyl
aahhh memories how about this one iron butterfly =inagodadavida aahhh memories.
my kids are brought up with ipods, they have no idea how good vinyl was/is to listen to.

just noticed im logged in as my daughter
cheers wally

Wally.. They are but memories mate! Revive them (Joint optional). My eldest son (16) is so into Led Zep, Bowie, Floyd, Santana you name it! We have the most incredible sessions together.. Nothing like loading the CD stacker in the car and driving somewhere.. before you know it people are staring at the two of us in the car while we play air drums and go crazy! Ahhhh Led Zep.. Its better than prozac!

hey i'm only 32 but i own at least 1000 12in records,200 7 in records and no cds i cant belive i actually use a computer ,i just love the vinyl warmth:thumb

pete wood ·

Man, this is soooo hard, how can you pin down just one?

These would be near the top of my tree....

Dirty deeds or Back in Black -ACDC
Dark side of the moon or Wish you were here or Meddle - Pink Floyd
Ok Computer or Kid A - Radiohead
Probot - Probot
Secret World or Us - Peter Gabriel
Rage against the Machine - Rage against the Machine
Audioslave - Audioslave
Brandenburg Concertos or Cello Suites - JS Bach
Kind of blue - Miles Davis
Elixor - Elixor
Harvest - Neil Young
Rust in peace - Megadeth
Giant Steps - John Coltrane

but I think probably at the top or very near is...

Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

Sorry, but music is like good food. So many textures and flavours, you wouldn't want to limit yourself to just one or two. 🙅

Oh sorry, I forgot "why".

Brothers In Arms has almost everything from stomping Rock to brooding ballads and almost everything in between. It revolutionised a lot of modern music and has an A list of perfomers on it from Sting on Vocals to the Brecker brother on Trumpet and Sax. However, the jewel in the crown from my point of view are the gravelly vocals and swooning guitar of Mark Knopfler. For man who can't sing, he does an amazing impression of beautiful music. :thumb

sinecure ·

Equal First:
"Nothings Shocking" and "Ritual de lo Habitual" - Janes' Addiction.

Why:
An unbelievable mix of folk, rock, thrash, acoustic and instrumental. Janes' caused the Grammys to introduce a "Best New Alternative" award, as they were the first independent label band to go Platinum in the US with "Ritual de lo Habitual". The beauty of the lyrics and power of the music must be experienced for yourself.

Close second:
"Liquidizer" and "Doubt" - Jesus Jones.
"Flaunt It" - Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
"Unomathemba" - Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
"Born" and "Classified" - Bond.

Best ever song:
"Three Days" - Janes' Addiction.

ColumBUS ·

urgh! my chemical romance = emo lame dumb dumb baaaad music!
🙂

i cant pin it down to any one album, but here are a few bands that i listen to...

hatebreed, korn, slipknot, soulfly, meshuggah, manson, Nine inch nails, lamb of god, horrorwood mannequins, cradle of filth, machine head, System of a down, suicide girls, rob zombie.
Los capitanes, casino rumblers, the porkers, area7, zombie ghost train, skatellites, the cat empire

urgh so many more, my brain fizzles.

but my favourite song of all time has to go to...
Tiny Dancer,
Elton John.

Hi

I'm a bit older than some of you, I guessed this because I’ve never heard of bands or albums your talking about.

I love nothing better than listening to the American Graffiti sound track, Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs is one of my best cruising songs.

I’m also into Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Stones, Accadacca and most country music, just love a little Dwight Yoakum on the stereo.

Steve

StenGuns ·

Steve.. You are going way back there man.. Booker T is soul food.. Love Green Onion's.. Love STAX Vault.. Platters, Sam n Dave, Pickett, Reading etc.. Then onto Motown!!.. God we are blessed by the variety of sound our lives contain.. The future is going to rate the 20thCentury as the richest musical period of all time..
(And I have never heard of these bands either.. doesn't mean I aint prepared to listen.. I'll sample on Limewire)

I just realised something. No one has said Cold Play or Pearl Jam. Why is that?

I really like Chris Martin and own all three albums but I wouldn't rate them up top. Same for Pearl Jam. Curious eh?

Avatar says it all
"Funeral" Arcade Fire

and the best two record combo is:
"Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" by the Beatles I can never seperate those two.

Scarlet ·

I gotta golf clap the range of taste there........ covers a lot of ground

My Chemical Romance are great!.....
I had no idea what an emo was..... (showing my age)
I thought they were deliberately making melodramatic music..... when I looked up the bands website, I'm seeing a bunch of goth looking sookie la la's............

then my lil brother explains to me what an emo is... pretty wet .... I'll just pretend they're cool and doing it for show

As for Pearl Jam.... I reckon some bands get so flogged, you gotta put em aside till they make a revival.....
like good wine.... a nice drop will age well and taste magnificent in ten years... ordinary wine will still taste pretty ordinary in ten years.....
same goes for hot chilli peppers.... i know blood sugar sex magic like my ring tone!.... but its been shelved cos it was flogged

BTW...FLOGGING MOLLY are great... no pun intended

For all those who said Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, have you synched it up with the Wizard of Oz?
How to Synchronize Pink Floyd and the Wizard of Oz :
1. Buy or rent the movie The Wizard of Oz.
2. Buy or rent the CD of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.
3. Put the CD in the player and press pause at the beginning of track 1.
4. Put the movie in your VCR and begin to play.
5. Turn off the sound on your television. Turn up the volume on your CD player.
6. When the MGM lion roars for the third time, unpause the CD.
7. If the credit "Produced by Mervyl Leroy" appears onscreen at the transition between "Speak to Me" and "Breathe," then you are correctly synched.
8. Sit back and enjoy!
Tips:
1. Use a CD, not an album. Stopping to flip the album would mess up the synchronicity.
2. Try to think of this as one long, bizarre music video. Don't expect too much and you might be amazed.
3. End the movie after one play-through of the CD. Avoid the "looping" method to replay the CD, as anything after this point is minor and far-fetched.
Synchronicities to look for:
1. When Dorothy runs away from home, the line "No one told you when to run" from the song "Time" is heard.
2. The tornado scene begins just as "The Great Gig in the Sky" starts playing. The song lasts for the entire duration of the storm.
3. The female singer begins moaning, her voice rising and falling in time with the mood of the tornado scene.
4. When "Great Gig" ends, the first side of the album also ends (not valid when using a CD).
5. "Money" begins as Dorothy opens the door and sees Oz. The black and white part of the film ends at this point and begins in color.
6. The lyics "Don't give me that do-goody-good bullsh*t" are heard as Glinda the good witch floats down in her bubble.
7. The dancing ballerinas seem to keep time with the rhythm in "Us and Them."
8. "Brain Damage" becomes the backdrop for the scarecrow scene where he's singing "If I Only Had a Brain."
9. The album ends with a heartbeat, as Dorothy presses her ear to the Tin Man's chest to listen for a heart.
