Where are all the OLD VWs???

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/51121/where-are-all-the-old-vws

VWFOOL ·

my first year of VW shows included the penrith show and there i saw Kubels and schwimmers and some cool old wagens.
Ever since then ive been pining for the old and the militant, but ive only seen 4 different split window beetles at valla, dovw and 2 at nats (on 4 stud pans).

I know they have to be out there, so where are they hiding?

bajachris88 ·

I have never seen any of those old ones u mention. earliest i have seen probably is only an oval.

Would be so great to see some of those 'Classic of the Classics' cars.

t2 ·

i know where an original split beetle is paint the lot ,well i believe its og paint, guess what it has no rust to and its not to far from my place.

VWFOOL ·

thats great, i guess my question is though, where are these cars at shows, is it that australia doesnt really have many vintage vws or that they just dont come out to the shows for watever reason, undriveable or owners not interested etc.

lets say for example we had a strictly vintage vw show, where only military and pre 54 cars were invited, would many come? or are their only a handful in the whole country? are all the split beetles imports?

VWCOOL ·

Same place all the old Holdens have gone...

VWFOOL ·

im also talking about the rarer shit as well, 21 window sambas and split rags, all that stuff. do we have these cars in australia in any sorta numbers or just one or 2 here and there?

MickH ·

I know of a person "up here" who has 2 (TWO) split beetles in his shed. They havn't seen the light of day for over 20 years and are both original and in unrestored condition,up on blocks!!! I've seen them myself,so it's not just a rumour. He has no interest in showing them and knows what they are worth which is why no one knows about them. He's an old guy who lives by himself and keeps to himself.

Bizarre ·

Does he have kids???

h ·

well i have a 54 beetle.. isnt that old enough or is that too new..?
im sure there are a few 54-59 models still around..
just gotta look around and you may even be able to buy one if you want.. they are out there..

VWFOOL ·

imagine he dies alone one day and the cars get sent to the scrap, wat a nightmare

Bizarre ·

Nah............... Hot Rod Matt just happens to wander by with a gas axe 🤪

or Bajachris sees it as another Baja project 🤓

:P

VWFOOL wrote:imagine he dies alone one day and the cars get sent to the scrap, wat a nightmare

They have been left to me in his will.He has no other family.I'll most likely leave them in my shed to....or give one to Brad to turn into a buggy!! How cool would that be??:jesus

Hi Sam,
Most Split window Beetles have been private imports....
There is One locally that has been restored professionally & has been at shows as the owner has heaps of trophies..
It isn't driven on the road, just sits in a garage...
when I saw it a few years ago, it was in a red carpeted room with its trophies.....
I have noticed that many vehicles You see at the nationals
one year... You never see them again....
Some are probably sold... but why they don't return...
I don't know.... where were the country Buggies... and only one RHD type 182 trekka [thing]... I've seen both RHD & Left Hand drive "things" at some shows...
I read on Here that there are a few country buggies out there... more are being found all the time...
I've seen LHD Beetles at the nationals too....
Best of Luck finding Your next venture...

Sam....I'm seeing Andrew Dodd tomorrow so I'll ask him about what his thoughts are. Ray Blacks son works in my building too, so I'll get him to put the word on his old man. I haven't seen some of Ray's "special" stuff for a few years - so maybe he might make the trip to Nambucca with something.

byronbus ·

Haha, they're all in andrew's shed

empi ·

Sam,

have a customer bringing in his 43 Kubel for some rust repair , no shiyt!

VWFOOL ·

i guess its undersatndable some ppl dont want to bring their cars to shows, maybe thats not their scene but id love to see something like u see in europe with just a shitload of pre 53 volkswagens buzzing aorund and a pack of schwimms crossing a river. would just be awesome.
im kinda tired of seeing run of the mill VWs at the shows, i want some spice in my life!

VWFOOL ·

by the way, im aware of vics huge collection or whoever owns that stuff but thats entirely my point, a shed full of rare vws nobody is doing anythign with them, itd be cool to get those old things running and out in the fresh air to a show or 2. this is not aimed at vic or whoever but more that yes i know these cars exist and that ppl hav them in their garages locked away, id just like to see them more often 🙂

squizy ·

We need our own Bad Camberg, similar to what the Vintage VW Club used to do at Castle Hill. I know Birch gets involved with the Motor Show, and there used to be some stuff showed in Darling Harbour, but you're right Sam....a pre 53 (or 57) get together would be great. What VW anniversaries are coming up?

frog ·

I recon pre 59 show would be suitable or anything with semaphores as Australia only really started vw life in 1954 and you would get significant numbers as to a pre 54 gig.
I remember seeing the ray black collection in members rides years ago, are they still in here?
If not they shoud be put back up as some refreshment.

Robo ·

I will second that!
Rob...

Scarlet ·

I know that Greg Clatke who has a shop at Asquith has a few nice bugs....the one on the cover of the new Australian VW book..... and a few of his mates dont do the nats....they did a small gig down darling harbour the other year....which is the one you are talking about sqizy......... there must be a few splitties among them......I'll ask him when I see him next...
more shows the better...

squizy ·

The cars that Vic has in that shed are not the one's I'm talking about.

Spoke to Andrew Dodd this morning - he is keen for a Vintage VW Show for sure - would make some of the real diehards bring their restorations and originals out of their sheds. You'd be amazed what he, Ray Black, and Rod Farrell have locked away. We reckon the June Long Weekend would be a prime slot, however would be too short a timeframe to organise something for this year - plus we would need to have an affiliated club run the show, as insurance would be a real, real issue.

I'll send you a u2u Sam about some other stuff that Andrew spoke about.

bajachris88 ·

who feels like going overseas to europ wit me and importing a few old gems?

IF they are more common over there, they should be cheaper and easier to find. Be insane driving an AUTHENTIC kubel car.

Sam, your taxi was that sort of car. I wish more people had the guts to do what you did with it.

Personally, I'm tired of the "I want a hoodride resto custom beetle/split with BRM/fuchs/radar/empi wheels, a roofrack and NOS chrome" crowd. I mean they are nice, but they are also common as now.

do us a favour with your next project and bring back some of the ol VWfool magic. 😉 :thumb

Already a vintage bus show on the june long weekend...and lots of other clubs are involved...and any model is welcome

But i agree, a vintage show would be awsome...

squizy ·

Bruce that may just be the weekend to target for next year. Build it up as the big Vintage VW get together. Close enough to Sydney and Melbourne (nearly) for a good weekend.

OK - now we have a show - how do we start to put the wheels in motion - send me a u2u.

oval TOFU ·

yeh, perhaps a multi marque vintage show would be a better idea?

VWFOOL ·

where do you come up with these great ideas squiz? genius!

byronbus ·

Its a good idea, dsk wanted a split bus show, so deano (CCC) ran with it and is making it happen...it will be the biggest split bus show in OZ, doesnt matter to dsk who supports it...

Definatley a vintage show is needed, and maybe the off year to valla could be a vintage show and the other year a split bus show...

DSK is a split bus forum (with a club attached - but the club is so laid back we dont have any rules, just got to be a split) We are by no means in competition with any other forum, especially avd.

One thing about dsk is that we have no business sponsorship, none, infact its funded by a few individuals and the 10cents we make from stickers or the $2 we make from tshirts...even though one of the founders owns a VW business (Kombi Rescue) he never ever uses dsk as an opportunity to advertise, nor does andy (volksfolks), its about the buses and the people.

DSK would be keen to work with avd and others to make a vintage show happen, but no politics, just cars and people ( a mix for politics i know).

Old Bar (Kombi weekend) is another opportunity...

I love splits, but ive owned bays and an early oval (regret selling the 54), they should be out there to see, not to win trophys but be enjoyed...

type_one ·

Here is where a lot of good cars are. I would love to be Ray Black.

I think you'll find a lot of these guys are the die hard fans of vintage and to be honest couldn't be bothered with some of the crap that goes on, in this forum and some clubs. And you must admit it does happen.

I say good on them. They love VW are and enjoying them. You don't have to show the world your car to be a fan. I must admit if I had a nice car, I probably would just enjoy it with my close VW friends and not even bother showing it.

I know of one guy that has some barndoors and another that has at least one 23 window and at very nice 21 window. The cars are out there.

You find also these guys just don't let you in to their circle because you love VW's. You have to earn your place at their table. They need to know once you know what they have that you won't tell the world about them. You never know you could be a pety theif.

yeah thats what Euro Classic Car Day is about.

oval TOFU ·

ah, ok..

bajachris88 ·

I don't blame the guys for hiding their cars in the shed, underlock and key.

It happens more regulary these days that you come across hooners or idiots, even people who have no clue how to drive. I would be far over protective to drive a 'vintage' on a road with those people. Even carrying it on a trailer to a show, would be a worry. all the bouncing in the trailer, tension of the chain holding it, where a rock from a truck is gonna flick up or fall out and hit it, etc. etc.

I would be in a situation of being far over protective. If it started raining while driving it outside, i would be the one to cry and put a blow dryer over it for hrs on end till it was bone dry again.

Yet again though, i am a nutter. Maybe thats just me.

I agree with pete. Hood rides are for PPL who couldn't be bothered or dont want to put the time into restoring these rare cars. They should go to people who will restore them so they are still around in the next 50 years for others to see and enjoy. I cant see that leaving the shell/body rusting away is doing anything for their survival. I spose Ill get a kickin for these sentiments from some, but thats my opinion and I would assume that PPL like Ray would feel the same.

On talking to Andrew and Bruce like I said I would last night Sam. Most of the vintage people you're looking for don't get onto the forum. Andrew didn't even know the DSK weekend was on. Bruce and I have started some discussion and ideas, but hey....your thread. Go with it man if you like.

Robo or they just like the ratty original look...anyone can restore and paint but you cant replicate an original paint bus...

Turbo54 ·

I have 3 54's. One is 1st week of January - fairly early for australia.
There is a split that gets driven regularly around adelaide and another rag 52 being built.
T54

wacked1 ·

i have a 54 aswell

oval TOFU ·

I have a 54 too.. a late one

Robo ·

Who knows if a 52 year old vehical is still sporting its original paint?

Scratch it in an inconspicuous spot and see what colours you unearth?

Not that hard to tell...look at both my utes, blue bus and hightop singlecab...

kustomkool ·

I know of two hebs just rotting away a schwim that will never see the light of the day and a samba sitting on bricks that gets more rusty every time I see it.I agree there is nothing better than going to a show and seeing some kdf stuff.Lets get em out there.

VWFOOL ·

damn thats a shame damo, lets do some covert search and rescue shit one night 😉

i dont consider 54s to be the vinatage im talking about, whilst still cool and not seen often, im talking the pre 53 and military stuff, as well as rare models like 23 windows, hebs etc

Robo ·

Theres no proof! how do you absolutely postivley know. most PPL think my bay has the original paint but as you know its not. Same with my Oval, Its not the original paint I know this cause I know the two previous owners, but I could say it was and who would know. Unless you can speak to the original Owner who bought it off the dealer you will never know for sure.
Rob...

byronbus ·

I know the owners of my past two split utes and the blue bus, and you can tell by the prep and whats under the paint...and the interior...you can tell the difference between my barny ute and my old 54...a bit of investigation will reveal if its original or not.

Warbs early split has original paint under the hiddeous yellow stuff and its sweet and in good nick, the bits ive seen are as shiney as the day it left the factory...it will be a lot more work than painting a bus, so not really fair to say that people who like original paint are lazy...

23s arnt rare, 54 ovals are rarer...i agree though, early stuff...when was the last time you saw a barny on the road? Ive seen a ute, but never a registered driving 11 window.

Anything as early as splits and ovals are good for OZ, earlier the better...a show or gathering with anything pre-67 would be fun, with pre-54 in a special section...

Doug Sweetman ·

Theres a kubel over here in perth. I know the guys drove it a round trip of 400km to the Cunderdin Air Show a couple years back..... very very very nice 🙂

VWFOOL ·

yeah i dont mind whether there is a pre whaterver year show, would be cool though if enough attended, but i would just love to see more old stuff AT a show.

Robo ·

If theres ever a pre 67 Ill definately be a part of it! It really makes me upset being so far away from europe and not being able to afford to fly over for some of the big vintage VW shows they have over there. Theres nothing better than walking throught row after row of Ovals and Splits. and seeing all the aftermarket goodies like motometer gauge sets, Rosenthal bud vases, Blaupunkt radios, Petrie steering wheels, Sherpa ski racks, Perohaus & Kienzle clocks. Judson superchargers. Okrasa kits and all that stuff. All I can do is read Volksworld and Ultra VW and dream!
Rob...

byronbus ·

Rob, we should rub the oval back and see if the original paint is still there...can you bring that copy of volksworld i looked at last time, november i think

Robo ·

Yeah.
I already know my old friend Bob had her painted 20 years ago. Its great to be able to see pictures of your 50 year old car when she was spanking new, and what happened to her in the following years. I still find it unreal to sit in and drive a car that existed on this earth before me, I never fail to get a buzz from that! I loved this car the first time I saw her. I always hoped and prayed that I would be allowed to make her mine. For me she has whats refered to as an X factor and one of the most enjoyable things in my life. If Im feeling down, when sunday rolls around and I take her out for a drive on our vintage club day, everything seems good. I only ever got the same feeling when I was a kid and was out in a great surf. You forget all your troubles and focus on the moment. To me this is priceless, and thats what I get out of this car. Priceless moments. What more can you ask for out of life! Thank god for old Pige!

anyways a good sentimental post.
Sam, what does happen when ppl have more than one car in their collection is :
you just have so little time to share aaround to the cars ......glad my son is taking up the interest and he made a grandson to hopefully finish what i started. ha ha lmho.
