What was it for? what was it like? What were the specs?
Thought it might be interesting to build a really heavily bluprinted 1300 or 1200 with period twin SUs or something.

I have a steroids 36hp engine !!!

I heard Stan built a full on 25hp motor about 10 years back for an apendix J car. Is it kind of like that one?

i know of a 1300 beetle motor with 165 flywheel hp. ill find out the specs when i talk to him nect.

Yep.......Ported heads with bigger valves, twin 28pict carbies, higher compression, 8 dowelled crank, Pobjoy spec cam with modified followers, heavy duty oil pump, all balanced etc etc !!!
As for HP figures :jesus.........don't know, don't care!!! I just wanted to build a 'period' performance motor (if you can call a worked 36hp donk performance:P0)

if that's true that's very impressive. better than a hyabusa engine. must be running huge valves, a very cranky cam, nut comp ratio and revving the begoodness out of it!
Craig,
what's it like to drive, when does the power kick in and such? is it running high compression? are the heads single or dual port?
Doug Sweetman ·
I saw a 1300 twinport engine in a Zoom magazine years back with a single SU / toyota supercharger setup that was claimed to run 14s in a baja... looked pretty neat.
Craig Torrens ·
Heads are modified 36hp single ports,9.0:1 compression.

Guy Harding built a 'beefy' small engine for Targa Tasmania a few years back. It would have been about 1300cc from memory as they had pretty strict guidelines for entry, engine capacity couldn't be increased. Long way from being a stock 1300 though......

Guy Hardings bug was 1200 i think. They went well and won the class, in an early 60's bug. They had dramas keeping the rocker gear holding together, but they were revving it to at least 6000rpm

theres a bathtub on wheels on ebay that has a 40hp 1200 with a bugspray and pea shooter exhaust....lol
that 61 bug done up like herbie on the front of one of the vw mags had a hot 36hp in it and did 100mph apperntly

I have driven guys car. its a 1300cc motor, rev's to well over 8000 rpm ( he said change at when the shift light kicks in, i changed at 8000rpm and now light had come on yet..... its a beast. Nothing below about 5000rpm. I think its probably about as powerful as my 1776 street motor (say about 110hp at the fly wheel)

I saw the guys at volksrestore do that engine and helped lift the body on it. It did a few 'test' laps of the area sorting jetting and sounded incredible. That enging had a very short stroke crank, short wide barrels, heads worked +++++++++ huge cam, huger carbs and a wierd harmonic that trashed no. 3 rockers like cheese. Was one of Matthers black art type engines. Was built to very specific regs, car had drums all round etc. Tatsy beast though.

whatever happened to Mathew after his cruise? I bumped into him at Redcliffe five years ago or so, he was great to talk to 🙂 what about Hoover I saw him at VAlla in army greens LOL

I contemplated this once, doing the NSW hillclimb series 0-1300cc.
Worked out that it wouldnt be any cheaper nor reliable than building a bigger motor and having more fun (in the end did neither) The crank would need to be destroked so you could get the bore big enough for decent size valves. Still have to buy cams, carbs and lightweight stuff.... Phttt. Would have been cool but not as much value for dollar.
