I know this sounds like a dumb question, but how do I know if my 1973 bug is a love bug or a super bug? The guy I bought it from advertised it as a love bug, but the rego papers have it listed as a super bug. What is the difference and how can you tell?

There is no such thing as a love bug,
that was just the name given to Herbie.
The way that you tell if you have a super bug is by checking out the front suspension.
If you have springs behind the front wheels, then you have a super bug.
If it has a huge curved windscreen, then you have an L bug.
If not its an S bug.

L doesn't stand for love by the way.

just to correct you it is actually a super as all 1600 bugs from mid 71 on where supers but it then depends on whether its a s or an L saying that its a 73 id say its an L(last of the) bug ie a 1303, in which case it should have all of the following a curve windscreen, the big round tail lights and a padded dash.

Does all of this help you?
Buzzbug, next time? You wish! I have ninja reflexes! 🥷

ive noticed quite a few ppl seem to call bugs with elephants feet tailights love bugs for some reason
but yeah superbug S were first started in 1/71 to replace 1500s and ran till 2/73 then superbug L started and ran till early 76
for a couple of months early in 73 u could get either a L or an S as VWA was in the change over process
