I'm selling my grandpa's L Bug for him, and he has givenm me all the details... but... He's said it has a 1300 engine. I always thought that L bugs had 1600s.
Can anyone confirm this for me??
I'll be calling his mechanic to make sure, just curious.
(For Sale ad up soon).
Bizarre ·
L bugs ALL had 1600 twin ports
Give us the engine number if you happen to have it
Jay_1965vw ·
Engine number is ABO 14123.
Glad to see I was right (in theory anyway... I suppose there's always the chance it's been changed....).

I bet that it also White and made in 1974? Just my rotten luck!

1971 (1 Aug 70 to 31 July 71)
Engine AB 0,000,001 - AB 0,141,591 44bhp(DIN)1300
now we know why it was such a slug. 1300 with the tallest gearbox in probably the heaviest and least aero of the beetles .... hmmm

Hi
Maybe its not an L bug. That motor is a 1300 twin port. Maybe the car is a 1300. If the spare is horizontal its an L bug (1303) if its almost vertical its a 1300.

won't the curved windscreen be the tell tale sign of if it's an Lbug or not?
vw54 ·
yes Wes is right if its an L Bug its gotta have a curved front screen and strut front end and therefore a 1600 engine
If its a 1300 then its a torsion bar front end and a flat screen
Lets face it the engine could have been changed 10 times over the years.

Hi
I forgot the most logical telltale, the windscreen, but the spare tyre location holds true for all models.

You are correct amazeer....
The Heaviest Beetle......
The least Aerodynamic Beetle....
with the Tallest diff Ratio...
& 1300cc engine.... Single Port ?? Yikes....

im not bringing up this point just cause i own an Lbug but i'm sure ive heard from several sources that the curved windscreen was MORE aerodynamic than the old flat screen:duh
u only have to look at it see that tell that
hmmm running along holding a giant flat board then with it curved which is gonna slow u down more??:o LOL

Theres more to it than just a windscreen though.
The flatter guards, flatter bonnet, upright headlights, windscreen which may be curved but very much larger.
I havent seen the figures, I'm just guessing.

Hi
I beleive that the worst bugs for aerodynamics are the flat screen, upright headlight models ie 1300, 1500 1302 and 76 bug. So my L bug will have early headlights, I guess that will be about the best you can get with a bug body.

As long as you have the indicators in the bumpers
I heard they are one of the worst offenders

Oh my... go offline for a few days and look what happens. I guess I really need to go talk to the mechanic and find out for sure.
