Just singed up because I was looking for infomation and thought the best place to go would be somewhere like this 馃檪
I'm looking at the end of this year if I can manage it to replace my trusty 1986 Holden Camira with a late 2000 VW Bora. Idealy I'm looking for the V6 model and I was wondering what all you guys and girls think of them? And if you have any good reasons not to buy one?
I'll accept any infomation that is on offer, you can never have too much infomation I reckon.
Thanks in advance all 馃檪

OMG!!!:o You must have brought the *only* reliable Camira!!! I don't know much about the newer model VW's as all vehicles I own are over 40 years old. But if you are comparing it to a camira then......yeah, the new models are fine as are bicycles and donkeys!! (Everyone I have known that has owned a camira has cursed them then sold/crushed/burnt/dumped them).:bounce
You have my pitty. Ditch the Holden and welcome to the real world of motoring VW style. Vw has a reputation for quality and reliability so you can't go too far wrong. When in doubt, get a qualified/trusted mechanic to check it out for you. What state are you in? I could maybe point you in the right direction if you need some help.

Thanks Boublecab, I was just sort of surfing around looking for infomation and somehow stumbled across this place. I'll zip over there in a bit and see what they have to say.
Adam - The wreck is somewhat reliable, meaning it does what I tell it most of the time. I'll fix up all the small problems with My car as I go, but I haven't had "too" many problems with it, it's just too damn old and needs replacing

I knoe that this is off topic, but I think that it needs to be said.
I've had 2 Camiras and both of them were/are very reliable. Don't knock the Camira too much. The survivors are the good ones, the rest, the lousy ones, have been scrapped.
Yesterday I blew a BMW away when he came around me at a freeway on-ramp and tried to get in front of me. I was in second gear and floored it. The look on his face was priceless. He couldn't believe that a much despised Camira could do that. The 2 litre Camira engine is square. It has amazing torque and I am constantly dragging people off when they annoy me.
Seriously. If you need a good cheap reliable runabout, consider the Camira. As I said, the survivors are the good ones.

Off topic I know, but Zoom magazine had a camira as one of their project cars once, centering on the Kalmaker software that can be used to reprogram the ECU in them.
With a basic dual throttle body manifold mod (cut the end off the plenum and weld a flange on, bolt a second camira throttle body on), a new cam and reprogram they got easily over 35% more power out of it.... not bad I reckon.

I never knew there were so many camira fans out there in vw world.馃榾 Sorry if I upset anyone:thumb
..Some of my friends used to own camiras a while back. They used to hack off the roof and use them for paddock bashers and hunting..oh and thrashing...the fun stuff!!! Once the fuel ran out, they got dumped in the paddock and replaced with another (I think we managed to send about 8 of them back to meet their creator. lol.) It never cost more than 50bucks to buy one as none of the local wrecking yards wanted them. Personally, i think that Holden should have imported Trabbys instead...at least they couldn't rust. The camira has done more damage to Holden's image and reputation than any other car they have built. I challenge any holden fan to dispute this fact.

There are some people in this forum that are into watercooled VW's (ie: me!). The 2000 Bora is a great car, looks great and runs well. I was looking at a Bora but then decided that I wanted to have a little fun before I got old and cranky so settled on the New Beetle Cabrio and it was the best decision I ever made.
Have you thought about a new Jetta? They have replaced the Bora and essentially look like the new golf with a boot.
Joel 路
everyone disses camiras becasue the first JBs were a total pile of shit
hopeless build quality and the 1600 engine was as useless as tits on bull but the first 1800 JDs had a much better efi engine but only the leaded ones ran well they ran like crap when they converted them to unleaded
the last JE camiras were the best though they had identical running gear to the N13 nissan pulsar and everyone raves that they were so good even though they're just a rebodied camira LOL

go for the Bora 4 motion if poss =awd =schmick and safe
Camira 1.8 was OPEL and a darn dood engine and economy too

I have seen some bad Camira's and some good ones. In fact pretty much any model vehicle can run with that. Magna's, EA's, VN's. They all suffered badly from poor publicity not long after their first model release - even though they are awarded highly when initially released.
I do recommend that you get independent vehicle test and report done on a 6 ish year old car. It is definitley in an age bracket where you have the opportunity to buy a really good one that is like new, but also the chance of getting a hack that is dolled up. That goes for any car, so don't feel you are losing $50 or so each time you get a car checked, consider what you can save by not ending up with a car that may potentially cost thosands more in mechanical repairs not long after buying.
Most of all good luck and enjoy your new car when you get it.

Yeah I knock my Wreck all the time but I've never had more fun than draging people in 180SX's turbos in my car. It's great fun 馃檪 Adam the best thing about a Camira is that when you get all four wheels off the road, they all come back down together 馃檪
Yeah I was planing on getting any Bora that I was looking to buy getting checked over by someone that knows what they're looking at. A $50 investment now could save me a lot of money later 馃檪
I've looked at the New Jetta but basicly I don't have the money for one of them 馃檪 If I was going to get one of them it would be the New Turbo Diesel one. If nothing else to save on fuel costs 馃檪
Edit: I was following a Bora Sport today, up Blackburn road. It was that really nice blue colour 馃檪

Ok, where do I start?!
How about the Piazza? The original 1984 Astra? The current Daewoo-built Barina? Umm, the Scurry? The XU6? (not really a Holden, it was the HSV that should never have been built)... The VC Commodore Four?...
A good Camira - especially the last SLi2000s - is a good car. But most were built like shit or treated like shit because of reputation...

heheh I did this in my XM Falcon once... Scared the crap out of me when I ended up in the next lane!! (I was doing 100mph at the time crossing an intersection). 5 Turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock doesn't make it easy to gain control of the front end once it is lost!
I *am* sorry for bagging the hell out of your camira. I still get my fair share of niggles with my car so karma is keeping up with me:thumb I just try to run faster!!!!
As hellbus suggested. It is better to spend $50 and get a car looked at thoroughly than to spend thousands on a potential lemon.
I must admit that never having ever owned a camira, all of the horrid things I have heard about them is from word of mouth and from other peoples experiences. I have never been game enough to buy one even as a get about car because I have;
1. 2 x 40+ year old cars
2. a mortgage
3. a girlfriend/finace/future wife/2nd mortgage
4. a harley davidson
and I don't need anything else in my life draining my finances!!
Kinda makes one feel like Al Bundy from married with children!!
It's good to see that an old banger like a camira can keep those tosser jap ^%#^**'s in thier place (pref. the rear view mirror!!).:thumb

Just on the Bora, dunno if relevant, but I owned a '96 Passat VR6 for 8 yrs. It certainly was a great car with a few probs over the time but none life threatening. Apart from the usual maintenance things, I did have a few cooling issues at the 5yr mark having to replace water pump etc and all hoses. I also had a fuel pump let me down too which was an expensive repair. Overall though, my experience is one of joy most times when behind the wheel.
As with any European, look for a car with a full service history by a specialist and have it checked out by someone who knows what to look for.
Good Luck and enjoy the ride to Dubville!
