I was 40 yrs over due for birth...

bajachris88 路

Lately, i have been honestly thinking, I should be born in the 60s. I feel like thats the only best time that i fit in.

passion for vws, hippy nature (without the bad hygiene), love peace unity, the less amount of crap we have today.

Things today just don't suit me. You hear great stories about the past, people getting along, less tv and media influence, not too much westernisation, obesity, junk food.

Everyone making fun outside, familes being families rather than distant people who just call themselves a family due to blood. Its a real shame.

Increasing desire for material possession, less people caring, less heart, crapper music.... all the annoying stuff that drives me up the wall.

I want to grow my hair long without looking wierd or freaking people. I want to be free. Give me the 60s.

:cry

Honestly, this is how i feel, as a 17 yr old being realised into the real world after just graduating high school last yr.

helbus 路

You can start by giving up your mobile phone 馃檪

I grew up without even a phone in the house and one single black & white TV, no airconditioning, no gas, no lollies, no chips, no chocolate and all heating including hot water was heated by firewood chopped by me. I'm only 32. I hear ya Chris.

baybuscamperkid 路

nah, your in the right time, just not with the right crowd. more then enough hippies up there, hell i even lived with some just south of you in Surfers Paradise of all places. there are a surprising amount of paople around who ignore the junk, u just gotta find them.

baybuscamperkid 路

heck, my cars are a '72 and a '76, my bikes date from the 40s to about 1980, some of my furniture dates back to the 50s, my camera is an SLR from the 80s, i dont watch exessive TV, listen to commercial radoi, go to raves... VW community is a pretty good place to meet real people, so are any other passions you have, lots of cool people in the mucis and arts scenes especially. if you get the chance hop in your veedub and travel, you will find alot of others who feel the same as you.

and if you grow your hair long people wont look weirdly at you, they dont look weirdly at my ponytail, at least i dont think they do :o

buzzbox 路

That's totally and exactly how I used to feel in the 80's! 馃槀
Then, later, I figured..
If I was born now, and still ended up the kind of guy that I am, I'd be thinking that same way about the 90's.
So I pretended that was true, and that I had travelled back in time
..and all of a sudden was where I wanted to be.
Didn't work all that well..

I don't think I'd love 60's culture as much as I do if I'd grown up there as myself.
Probably would have been obsessed about the 40's!!

As it is I love certain things about most decades.
The 50's have cool things to offer too. The tin toys from Japan are awesome.
There's heaps of cool stuff from the 70's, too..(possibly including myself)

Bizarre 路

yep..... the 60's were brilliant

race riots
Vietnam
bigotry
sharpies
discrimation rampant

Man...... THESE are the good old days.

Put down those glasses

Meh, you weren't born in the wrong era... just born to be an individual. :P

Grow your hair long.
Drive a wicked veedub.
Listen to music from 60s/70s.
Make fun outside.
Be peace-loving and caring.
Don't watch tv or eat junky food.
Make time with your family doing stuff together.

More importantly, just be yourself.
You'll be amazed at how much people will respect you for it and will love you for who you are, not what you are.

the goldy isn't the best place to get back to grass roots...I grew up there and can't stand the place now.

I had long hair, a beetle and alternative attitude when i was 18 and it didn't fit in with 98% of the people that I had to deal with every day.

Anyway, 12 years later and i know its not about where/when you are its about the people that you surround yourself with and everyone else can go think what they want!

say, did you see the new big brother...

koolkarmakombi 路

Nah, Chris you are just undergoing the usual angst because you dont fit in.

No one does

Be an individual

Wear your undies on your head

dont listen to eminem, no reason its just crap! ( lol )

Starbug 路

ahhh yes, dont worry... i feel that way too.
think of all the groovy fashions, groovy music and groovy drugs i could have had were i born just 50 or so years ago... being a young adult in the 60's would have been idea for me... lots of chemistry to be experiemented, lots of new things to discover and lots of fun times to be had.

of course, it had its bad side too (but i like not to think about that...)

nowadays, i cope with my anomalous time frame by filling my house with retro furniture and nik-nax, collecting retro clothes and especially fabrics... which drives my mother absolutely insane because "if i knew i was going to have a daughter that was into all that stuff i would have kept it!"
i also own (but dont drive) a 68 beetle, ride a retro-looking vespa clone scooter around everywhere, practice nothing but traditional photography with 30 and 40 year old cameras and a darkroom and i prefer buying records over cds any day...

i know im stuck in the wrong era, but the 60's didnt have personal computers so it all makes up for it in the end :P

Gibbo 路

Im an individual. Just like everyone else.

Just ignore the crap and live like ya wanna.....

馃檪

bajachris88 路

yeah, i'm an individual, to some degree. But i want to be more.

Lol, nah mate, i hate eminem, never liked him. Pretty crap how winging about ur mother for a whole CD can get u into the charts. Really crap. Anywho, before i start getting flammed by eminem fans...

Had great fun in some individual try outs...

Wore a big black formal hat (Kinda dressy hat, not top hat, cause it don't go up that high) through beenleigh with casual clothes, had 5 people in 2 hrs stick their heads out of the window of passing cars yelling stuff. Never could work out what they were saying.

Was dressed in very formal gear after a job interview, and was dancing out of the shopping centre, going dum dum de dah (u get it), had a few people stare at me, to realise what i was doing was wierd (dancing business man like 17 yr old In beenleigh)

thats the most unique things i have done recently.
I wanna be the minority

JingJok1 路

dont take the brown acid man!

Chris, grab yourself a board and hit the ocean man, plenty of that good mother nature lovin to be felt when sitting out the back watching the world pass by. the first duckdive will let you know your still connected to the whole universal buzz.

It aint about the hair nor the clothes man.

If you feel the need, I have a few books here by Dan Millman, Way of the Peaceful warrior, sacred journey of a peaceful warrior and no ordinary moments. read them and you will get what your place is in the world regardless of time.

peace to all you shell-shocked hippy brethren veedubbers out there to on a marvelous friday night!

Hey man
Nothin stoppin you from doing your own thing! Your not alone in thinking things are going down the wrong road! Its up to you how you live your life. If you like the 60's values, live them! Dont give a toss what others think. There are others thinking and living the same way. Personally I like the 50's. PPL didnt have enough money to be trendy, they did the best with what they had. Women wore dresses and looked like women, they wore stockings and suspenders, I defy any man to say they dont like those! A girl in a pretty dress dose it for me more than hipster jeans and ripped tops.
My daughters love the 60s /70's stuff now, it's kind of corny for me to think they like stuff from when I was growing up! They constantly watch a movie called LORDS OF DOGTOWN! man its like looking at my life! yet they think Im some old fossil! Do your own thing and be proud of it!

Chris, I generally agree. Not sure on that long hair though!

>yep..... the 60's were brilliant<

>race riots............ Not too much around Sydney.... seems a bit different now!

>Vietnam< 20 year olds got screwed twice on that one so have to agree!
>bigotry< Not in my areas. Did I miss something?
sharpies< ............ Only knew of them as swarf from lathes amd milling machines.

>discrimation rampant< ......... Not in my workplace but then again, it was only a small firm............ NSW Government Railways. At school? Never, and we had plenty of other nationalities from the old Scheyville Migrant Hostel near Windsor

>Man...... THESE are the good old days.<

In those days whenTV didn't get in the way of us learning the mechanicals of whatever vehicles we were driving, in my case, the learning on the VWs was at the age of 14 giving elder brother a helping (Hindering!!) hand to recon a 36 HP bug engine. Later got licence on it and went on for the next 20 years driving VW vehicles, mainly Type 3s.

YES! They were the good old days in many ways. It's a pitty that so many missed the steadier pace of life.

yeah. the 60s were great from what i have heard, the weekend was a weekend, no one (hardly) worked sundays, there was time for people to chill out and relax, people had lives besides their work/job.

That image u just explained, is the image of the 60s i have DH. Life today is such a rat race. buck tooth guys running round everywhere.

1500S 路

Sorry Chris! Had a bit of a prob editing it a bit!

Yes, the weekend was the weekend but that could be a problem at times. Everything closed at around 12 on Saturdays and didn't open again untill Monday. Wreckers yards were the only thing that were sometimes open all weekend.

On many occasions, we pulled a motor on Friday after work, stripped it to find what was worn/broken and after getting the bits on Saturday, rebuild the engine and have it back in for driving to work on Monday. They were the pressure days!

When I read some of the questions some of our fellow members ask, I realise that the modern way of life has stolen much of the mechanical inquisitiveness of many. It seems a big task for some and I've had plenty look in horror when you tell them about machining heads, crankcases etc for an engine. What? you didn't pay an expert to do it? Many of us have been machining these parts and more before the experts became "experts" since we were 18 and never had a problem. But that's what we do for a "real" job every day of the week anyhow! I do suppose it helps.

hard when i'm a minor 馃檨

helbus 路

You can't weld car panels with a cheap cheap welder. You have to get at the minimum a MIG welder. The cheaper it is the more likely it will be you will have to throw it away when it starts welding crap and you kick the daylights out of it.

Robo 路

Well thats it, Im off, All the rums gone and the missus has drunk all the beer.
Rob....

phatratpat 路

DONT BUY A SUPERCHEAP WELDER ! !
save the coin & buy something descent ! 馃お

bajachris88 路

how much u rekon the minimum i should spend on a welder?

K robo, night mate.

1500S 路

I still prefer oxy for what I do as I seem to get more control. The only drawback is the bottle rental of @200+ per year. Too long since I used MIG and TIG of the real variety and not too sure on the gasless types of continuous wire welders. (I tend to not call them GASLESS MIG as MIG is METAL INERT GAS and if there's no INERT GAS, do they become just M welders?!) Proper modern name is GMA (GAS METAL ARC) and GTa (GAS TUNGSTEN ARC)

Have a small stick welder for just small stuff (OZITO) but is only a low duty cycle. After 8 x 100mm runs with 2.5 rods, it tends to shut down for 10 minutes or so.

DH

PS. There's that bloody teacher coming out again!!!!

baybuscamperkid 路

if you dont have the dosh hire a gasless mig for a couple of days if you have to, take a day to practice, then do all the cutting and preperation necessary, and hare the welder for aqnother day to put it all back together. should only cost you $50 per day plus wire.
