it will have gene berg stamped in the nose cone casting.

the true shift versions also had an identifying stamp. "trueshift"on the intermediate housing from memory.

Might be worth talking to Wayne Penrose, I think he's built a few of these, might be able to tell you what it's worth.

The kit you have is a TRUSHIFT 5-speed conversion kit for an early beetle transmission . the pinion and the mainshaft in the early trans are threaded on the ends and not circlip. These kits were around $1200- when new back in the late 80's and I fitted one to my rotary powered beetle back then . They do have a weak link in the adaptor key area and are not recommended for high horsepower . I am currently building one and modifying the key area to strenghten it for a high horsepower engine .
Regarding the cooling- The engine may run hotter if a std 1600 engine due to the additional load put on the engine to push the vehicle at lower revs . Higher capacity engines may run a little cooler but not noticably .
I have seen a kit like this for sale recently for $600 and thought it to be a bargain........ Wayne Penrose .

thanx heaps Wayne......... u sout coast nsw dubbers are lucky to have a legend...bargain vehicles too....karmen

I have been offered $600 by the great man and is cheap at that (he says)

so any advance on $600 pls??

glider69 ·

how early beetle gearbox will it fit?

karmen ·

I wouldnt be sure but you can check with wayne penrose on www.wpvw.com.au go to contact us section
it says type one he would know i say from 61
if u had an earlier box then u would not have 1st gear synchro but a stoporcruch and you would update anyways if you were to put 5th gear in.

says T1 you could still do it from my observation because we used to fit later full synchro boxes into ovals etc and lower at the same time !!
