gull had one, apparently you just use the powersteering pump as an oil scavenger and put a cooler on the tranny. something else about an extra gasket on the input shaft or something too.

Pete , gull was using a kombi auto not a semi auto. The semi auto requires an external pump to run the system, I was thinking instead of using the power steering pump as an auxillary oil cooling circuit to use it as the main supply pump for the converter.Hence with some possible pressure adjustments you could adapt a subie to a semi auto ( you could even run a cooler on the pressure relief circuit if required). I suspose if you mounted a power steering pump (as a converter pump) on vw engine you could do away with the split pump and could full flow the engine.

They seem to be a very strong unit (Borg Warner design), from what I've read the main things to watch out for are
1 Flex plate coming lose and being damaged
2 Mixing of the diff and transmission oils ( instant death) . Seal between diff and gearbox should be replace every 7 years or 70 000 miles
3 Spider gear clearance in the diff should be checked
4 Wear on oil pump spline
5 Don't forget the diff is a seperate unit to the transmission and some failures have be caused by lack of oil in the diff.

At 8:22pm on 31st May 2006 'Retro' the Fasty arrived, one week earlier than his due date! 😁
He arrived by forceps delivery, but is safe and sound. He cried a little bit when being taken to his snuggy bed, but now he's fast asleep. He will need a big drink of petrol when he wakes up...
... but look at his cute 'lil face!! 😂
I'd take more photos but I can't feel my hands or feet... it's freeeeezing outside. Wait 'til you hear about the horribly painful labour, but 'Retro' was/is so worth it! I called Steve from Showtime (thanx to the positive plug someone posted on AVD a little while ago) to pick up the car in Adelaide and bring him to me in Melb.... but Steve told some other carrier guy to pick it up (not happy Jan), and a week early. So it wasn't the trusted Steve who came, it was Tony. Well... I won't say much more except talk about the mother-of-all-mullet hairdoos! :duh Tony has been on the phone to me atleast 15 times since 4pm, telling me my correct directions weren't right, then it turned out they were right (I wasn't a co-driver in car rallying for nothing!) so he finally found my place but decided to unload Retro halfway down the street opposite. A Hilux 4WD with no keys at all had to be rolled off the truck first, then my Fasty came off (yay!) and then the 4WD was winched back on.... all of this happened in the dark mind you as Tony didn't want to park near street lights? I put up with his queries as to if I'm a nice girl, and am I worth the effort he'd gone to driving from Adelaide to Melb (wish my Eden had of been here for the delivery... 😢)
You think Tony would have known what he was doing since it's his job to drive a truck throughout Oz and when the best time is to drive through a city, certainly not peak hour! 🙄
So after freezing my butt off outside for an hour while he casually unloaded the cars, I finally have a new baby to pamper. Being the snap-happy child that I am, there will be LOTS of pics of his progress from grubby toddler to a handsome young man. He won't be anything special to most of you, but to me he will be a sweetie and will be much loved.

Retro was driven today... t'was a little bit scary as he decided to have teething problems! (typical veedub :P)
Gave him a few litres of juice to enable reaching the petrol station for more, and a big drink of oil since there was none inside :o we started him up (battery was okay surprisingly) and after warming the engine enough off we went. Brakes are at about 10% of what they should be so that made things kinda interesting, and apart from being extremely loud (non-existant exhaust) he drove really well! Felt very solid and sure on the road, turns very nice and changed gears good too. Then I got to one of the biggest interstions probably in Melb, and you think Retro wanted to go through it? No! He decided to stall on me... and once started there was no acceleration at all. Managed to limp him across the road where he decided to act all fine again (but a bit backfirey) so I think he was scared of such a big intersection! 😂 I laughed so much driving him, poor 'lil bugger. He looks so sad with all his little body blemishes... and he sounded so rough and old and loud.... people were giving him a good look though with smiles on their faces (probably wondering what on earth kind of car it was, don't see many Fasty's in Melb) 🙂 Can't wait to get him back from my mechanic and drive him about without having to worry if something will break. After that, body repairs will be in order and then interior. Nothing special, but he will be loved and proud!

sounds like a typical VW when you first recieve them - you never know what they're gonna do! Sounds and looks like a real trooper though - can wait to see it! Maybe on the next cruise you can take Retro and Edan can take PBB since his car doesn't like being on cruises!

Rod and I are very familiar with the long lists for RWC. When we adopted Lello the list was so long that the assessor simply stopped writing when he filled 2 pages .....

I'm glad Squiff came with RWC and rego. I'm pretty damn sure the RWC was fudged a little cos i found so many things wrong that i fixed up straightaway... like tyres that shred themselves when you brake hard, and steering WAAAyyy out of alignment, and dodgy clutch, and the steering wheel was on the wrong way round so the indicators didnt cancel at the proper time, and the windscreen squirter didnt squirt, and badly worn brake pads, and the shockers were squeaky and hidden from view by years of grime, and the brakelight switch didnt work (so no brakelights), and quite a few more....
It's all good though... Squiff's a handsome lil fella now and im sure Retro will be too in no time at all 😀

I replaced the main brake line in Ruby,from master cylinder to rear tee; cost $20 for the line, and a few hours of time, or is it the slave cylinders etc,

The master and rear cylinders need replacing, as well as the front discs and rear drums, front pads and rear shoes, and brakes hoses... I'm tempted to just get discs all round since it all needs replacing anyway...
All 4 ball joints are worn... steering coupling is cracked... new steering tie rod end... no rear bump stops.... rear main engine seal has oil leak.... blinker relay and wiring to be repaired.... new windscreen.... but wait... there's still more!
The few little things that I can do I'll probably save a few $$$ by doing/replacing myself.... side mirror, seatbelts, rear lenses, couple of globes, pedal rubber, windscreen washer bottle and hoses, etc. But the majorish things I doubt I'd have the skill to do, and my mech can no doubt do them a hell of a lot quicker anyway.

The problem with buying cars from SA is we dont have to go through MOT every year and can let things slip like everything you mention and get away with it. Then you take it to another state and have problems. Who did this car come from. My friend has a single cab bay that is the exact colour with the same stripes. Wonder if it came from the same person. I am looking for a set of front seats like the ones in the front if anyone knows of any.

if you are thinking of rear disc brakes then you might as well do it now while everything has to come off anyway.
all up it doesnt sound too bad just some time & money..

they really can play up....
If the master cylinder is too expensive....
You can have them resleeved for less than $150...
and the stainless sleeve will never wear out....

I think rear discs are just an extra added expense....
I'd go with new drums... etc...
Did You know that No air cooled VWs in the USA were ever sold with disc brakes on the front....
and they had cabrio 1303S beetles until about 1980...
the only VWs with them were Karmann Ghias in the late 70s...
So, You don't really need them on the back....
but they look nice...:P:P
I replaced everything on My beetle so it got passed very easily.... Ball joints, tie rod ends, brakes, brake hoses etc...
Laminated windscreen as I don;t like the safety glass type.
and My master cylinder was sleeved...

I've decided to go with new drums instead of discs for the back. 2-3 month wait for the disc kit anyway!
So early next week, brakes will be done and I'll meet up with mechanic and go through the list as to other things he can replace/fix. The little things I'll do and I can take my time, since I'll have to save more $$ for body repairs and respray... Retro will still look retroey, but he won't be looking the same as he does now! 😉

Finally got Retro back from Dale today, my what a difference all-new-everything-brakes makes! 😀 Literally everything was replaced, as well as a host of other major bits.
Next up will be his body repairs.... would take some pics of him now he's back home but he's a filthy little munchkin! :P

Come off it dude, they powered up from a 1500 to a 1600 with twin carbs and then EFI. The next type 3 shaped car VW made had a type 4 engine in it. What does that tell you? Even Volkswagen knew they were grossly underpowered. So leave out the posing and bolt in some real horses. Heck, use a 2L bus motor if ya have to so you can save your anal, aircooled purist reputation (whatever), but lets not pretend they are "pretty great" in the engine department. For my money, a subie would be a great move. Double the HP with a bog stock motor. :thumb

This week am hoping to start cleaning up the Empi 8's so I can repaint them and get new tyres put on (will post pics as they progress, gotta be easier than the Teledials I did!).... then I can get some quotes for body repairs and a (hopeful) respray! :P

I've picked out a colour I'd love him to be, but need to see how much $$$$ it'll cost first.
This week am hoping to start cleaning up the Empi 8's so I can repaint them and get new tyres put on (will post pics as they progress, gotta be easier than the Teledials I did!).... then I can get some quotes for body repairs and a (hopeful) respray! :P

yes well, good for you, you seem to have a couple dozen sitting out the back. As for the rest of us, we're not all that rich and sofisticated. Well... it's been a while since anything was updated! But that could be because nothing's been done... 😁
Anyway, wheels were sent to be sandblasted. I tried cleaning them up a bit but it didn't work as they need some more forceful lovin'. When they return, I shall make them primered and painted and pretty!

Nope, they won't be the same colour! Probably a nice silver all over.
Still wondering what colour Retro should be too... so silver will be the safest bet for the wheels! 😉

...haven't seen you online for a while Laus! Good to hear that Ret is making some headway. I like the weathered black centers with a raw rim... (get your minds out of the gutter) So no new news on the body work?

Yeah, I haven't been on here much at all. Nothing's happening with the dubs so nothing to say really. 😂
PBB is behaving herself and looking lovely as always (except for the dirty rain... grrr!) and Retro is in need of some TLC.
the wheels look better in the photo than they are in RL... the polished rims aren't that polished and have crusted crap on them that was too stubborn for even a wire brush! So that's why they were sandblasted.
Am hopeful that bodywork on Retro can start after DOVW, but I'm trying to choose a colour for him to be.

Hi PBB, I am also an early fasty owner from Melb, and I can't wait to see Retro's progress once funds allow (I know the feeling). Perhaps down the track Melbourne can have a type 3 cruise, cause there seem to be a really good group of 3's around.
Anyway, I was wondering if u could U2U who you are using to get your wheels sandblasted as I have a set that also need doing.
Love ur rims, but I may be biased as I have a set of silver empi 8's on my fasty🙂

I'm excited and motivated for Retro since today I got a lightning quick delivery of bits from the States! 😀
One day soon he will get his new muffler put on.... and hopefully I can source some heater boxes too.
Empi 8's will be painted nice silver in a couple of weeks by Eden's brother... can't wait!
