how many squirters do we have ,which engine type ,which m.s type????????????

urban_myth ·

I'm interested in doing it, just for fuel only. I may start collecting the parts for it, it seems like a worthwhile learning experience...

bajaben ·

how much does it cost to do all that stuff. just the fuel. i would be really interested. need a turbo :P

toplessbug ·

fuel only is relativly easy ,just fab a manifold and away you go ,adding distributorless ign is a little more involved but all the info you need is here http://www.msefi.com/
about $1kand no more distributor -no more carbs-more grunt:beer:beer:beer

barls ·

im interested in doing it eventually

You got to finish what you have first Barls!

:P

bajaben ·

$1K and its all done? that awesome. i would love that. i heard that it costs about that just to get the ecu. if you someone can tell me where to get the stuff and how to do it so i can get no more dizzy and no more carbs for about $1K i would love them forever :P

hence why i said eventually barry. maybe if i can get some time in sydney or taree with out being shipped off to hunt the illegal fisherman and refugees id be finished by now

bajaben ·

Anyone? If i can work out where and how much to do this then ill do it with the new engine straight away, anyhelp would be appreciated.

Look on shoptalk forums, there is stuff about megasquirt there...

http://www.megasquirt.info/-- prices in us dollars
ecu and software $250----A$~ 360 --- freight ~30 A$40
T.B and injectors --wreckers A$ $80

thats the minimum--- under A$ 500, after this the rest is up to you ,fab a manifold ,do you have a laptop?-needed -all the software is available free including maegatune ,you will need a 3 wire o2 sensor and bung -wreckers, cabling and assorted fittings $50
If you have to start paying trade people for their input then obviously the price will escalate
but you can do it for this
wana get rid of the dizzy?
edis complete s/h $A~150 the software is already in the ecu at no extra cost
boostengineering@earthlink.net
has all the bits including the dizzy block off plug if you want it to look cool
read these sights end to end to see if its for you all the info you need is there and very easy to read:beer

76bug ·

what crank angle sensor do u sugest?

bajaben ·

so you gotta get it from the states? i already got a 009 with a electronic points replacement and im going to get an msd. So if i can fab the manifolds ill be set. hmm. what size TB would you recommend for a 1916 thats gonna be turbo a little bit later on. or do you think just change the TB when the turbo goes on?

toplessbug ·

its made in the states developed by bowling &grippo
the 009 makes a FANTASTIC paperweight -flog it,how much was your msd going to cost? i rekon you could nearly get an ecu for the same price
around 50mm would be good for a T.B
as for C.A.S use E.D.I.S complete, is good, is cheap.and interfaces directly with ms2v3
read the links all the info is there
importing this sort of equipment from the U.S is too easy ,email the preferred suppliers in the links and it will be on your doorstep in a week

bus914 ·

TB size depends on engine size and revs just like carbs do.

beetlemex sell manifolds and TBs for type 1.

009 can be used as a crank angle sensor for fuel and spark ask Ian. stock distributor may work for fuel only efi.
the 1.9L wesserboxer dizzy can be used it has 2 pickups
also TR Magna EFI dizzy can be used after some machining - if any one wants one, i've got one.

on a beetle go crank trigger, sequential injection and direct fire ignition, and toss the distributor altogether

when u get a laptop for the megasquirt system, make sure u can find somewhere nice and neat to mount it to, and wire it up to ur sound system.

With windows media player, it can act as a movie player, as well as a great sound system + MP3 player, with full equalisers, and visualisations that match the songs.

Can also work out as a DVD player, and with appropriate mods, u can have tv reception, internet, telephone etc, and use it also as a personal organiser. Think u can also have GPS with it to.

The amount of $$$ u can save is great with it.

Btw, just read up on megasquirt, its very appealing.

toplessbug ·

50mm will take care of most T1 applications unless its way out there in capacity,it will certainly handle the common 2lt sizes
btlmex are un available ,believe it or not there are very few s/h units available, new is impossible,,,the runners are a bit smal l& the T.B & plenum is much to small for anything other than stock.
Use edis and all your probs are solved ,forget sequential with M.S as you need a router board which is still under development and the extra gains simply arnt worth the hassles involved to get cam angle as well as crank angle, just toss out those worn out antiquated dizzys and get edis and batch fire
dont forget you need both cam and crank angle for sequential :beer

bajaben ·

im not good with the efi talk. i dunno what any of that ment haha. i get the fact that you need the ecu, and you can use a laptop to tune. so you can just plug the sparkplug leads into the ecu? or something like that. i really dunno much about it.

toplessbug ·

Ben ,you neeed the ecu to drive the injectors ,it gets the information it needs from various sensors around the engine .
when you throw away the dizzy you need something to tell the ign system to fire ,the ecu in this case uses a ford developed system that externally is very simple,it just uses a wheel attached to the crankshaft that has teeth on it and a sensor "reads "the teeth and sends the info to the ecu which processes it and sends it back to the ign system to fire the plug.
The injectors are all fired at the same time (batch fire) instead of individually (sequential) as its so much simpler and in reality makes little difference to performance
you really need to go to the M.S site and read ,start with the faq's all the good stuff is there:beer:beer:beer

i heard the 2.1 water boxy dizzy is the way to go because it has no advance. oh yeah im after one to lol

"Batch" fire will actually give you slightly better performance, "Sequential "will give you better economy and smoother running.

Ahhhh nope.
The size (Dia / CFM) of the TB has no effect on engine tuning at all whereas the carb choke size has EVERYTHING to do with tuning.
The only difference its going to make is the response (or airflow in CFM) in respect to a given throttle position.
You can run a 100mm TB if you want to, except the small engine will "see" wide open throttle after about 1mm of pedal travel.

However, some creative work with the cable pull ratio nad your issue with snappy throttle goes right away.
Easy!

FWIW, a 44mm TB (off a Pulsar Turbo ET will flow in EXCESS of 400 HP an deliver good throttle response versus pedal travel.

not really, the effect of such a large tb would be very difficult tuning as the map sensor would see close to atmospheric after a small throttle opening .The tb needs to be sized to match the engine requirements but there is a much greater mismatch tolerance than carbs as you say,but 100mm on a 2lt with our rpm range is a bit much. You could disable the map and work off tps but again there would be a lot of rooting around with ratio's to get any sense as a small change in butterfly opening would need to represent a larger tps step to be anywhere near linear:beer

My 1916 had 48mm quad throttle bodies and tuned fine.It ran of TPS and had no airflow meter.

hey mick. do you still have these? if you do would you be willing to sell? i haven't seen the buggy around much lately, is it still going? or off for more work?

Read my post above again a little closer M8.

The size of the TB has NOTHING to do with the tuning of and EFI setup (MAF or MAP) UNLESS the EFI system sees throttle position alone and not MAP as a sole method of fuel metering.
Very few, if any automotive efi systems rely on throttle position alone nowadays.
MAP is MAP is MAP regardless of the size of the throttle body the air comes thru and i clearly pointed out, and how to workaround the issue of large CFM for small throttle openings.
