Can anybody help.... my girlfriend had been hassling me to fix her car for months - i told her to get in line behind the 2 splitts that I am restoring, however now the gearbox is doing all sorts of strange things.... popping out of gear - wierd grinding nad crunching noises, I am fairly sure it needs another one...
Its a 72 type three (squareback) do I need to get a replacement unit from the same year, or can I just chuck in a bettle/kombi gearbox..... probably not...
Anyone got a type three gearbox to get me out of trouble and my girlfriend back on the road???
Thanks .....

Before ripping it out, jack the car up and slide under and have a look at the gear shift coupler to see if it is intact as this can cause miss sfits and crunching ect. Put a safety stand under or spare wheel under the other tyre before getting under.
A 4 joint Beetle box will bolt straight in.
Cheers.

good advice - will try it later....
I had the car on the ramp spun the wheels and there is a distinct bearing noise from the gearbox.... but I will check the coupler.... I guess that is just near the gear box somewhere
any one else???

cv x 4 not swinger

Also known as double jointed (Whereas the swing axles are single jointed)
The shift coupler will be at the nose of the box (Opposite end to the engine).

Sounds like it's Fk&$d. Get a replacement gearbox out of any VW with 'IRS' ("independent rear suspension") rather than 'swingaxle'. eg any 1971-on Superbeetle or L-beetle, or another type 3

isn't the grubscrew hole on the shift rod on the underneath side for type threes?
So if you get a beetle box you'll need to redrill the shift rod for this.

yeah, fuk, good point. But most - not all - boxes I have seen/worked with have dual holes

I have 2 type 3 boxes sitting on the shed floor, but I am in Central NSW, also have no history on them.

Yes,
a 72 type 3 has IRS rear end with constant velocity joints.
Two on each side... this stops the camber changing as You go over a bump...
SuperBugs have this type of rear axle assembly...
I'm not sure whether type 3 gearboxes are different or not... to SuperBugs...
