Something I'd like to do before I die is build a Beetle (with a beetle engine) capable of a modest 14.3 second 1/4 mile; this would make it quicker than a Ph III GTHO Falcon, if memory serves.
As it would also be for street & hill-climb duty, Im imagining an IRS pan, with a '60's body for lightness.
I invite any and all comments on:
1. Pan/body suggestions
2. Whether a T1 engine will deliver enough street-reliable HP.
3. Calculations as to what HP or cc I might need to get to the goal with an N/A engine.
4. Ditto a turbo engine.
I don't even plan to start this in the next year, but I do plan to plan it.
TIA for your contributions.

I am sure a Phase 3 was 14.9 secs
a solid 1916 in a stripped out beetle will pull this.
A set of webers, and some worked heads and a healthy cam
my guess is 80 ponies in a 800kg beetle will be fine
My mate was running mid 13's with a 2007cc and 135 ponies
i reckon you could work a 1600tp to do that 1/4....
would be cool to see a stocker with bolt-ons pulling high hp...

use a later bodyshell/car for road/hillclimb- they are a little heavier, but much stiffer. No door lock/poppy-openy worries and the engine bay is bigger to suit a 1600-based engine. For drags, use whatever the hell you like!
I got more than 80hp and last time I raced (full weight, std 4.1 gearing, long time ago!) I did a 16.4 at the old EC

bolt on an OzNos kit.

you could get low 12's out of a 2110 fuel injected turbo

i love the idea of this thread - or mainly the content within it- if only the 1916 thread at the top of the thread list was a little more active...........

Those falcons ran 100mph in the quarter.
They also had gearing to do 140mph and early seventies tyre technology.
By comparison, a 850kg VW would need 145hp (about 125 to 130 at the wheels)
With modern tyres and some low gearing that is a twelve second car (n/a).
you need to look at the speed AND elapsed time.
A bad day at the track might give slow ETs, but MPH is the true indicator of power.
You 4 got question 5 how much time and MONEY will it require.
I would start with a IRS disc brake chassis as there lighter than a 40hp also use a 68 on body again much lighter as they used thinner steel etc etc
Is this is a purpose built car or will you want to register it for street use... if not then weight is the easiest and cheapest method to get your project going fast get your self a 1 and 2 inch hole saw and make the chassis like swiss chesse
remove all the trim and excessive wiring light blinkers wipers horn etc etc
build or buy a light weight seat the list goes on
I would like to have the time myself too many other projects to do

Good onya modulus...I'm going through the same thing. Had a beetle which got little use so I decided I might as well have a bit of fun with it. Now all I have to do is finsh it.

ian swinkles built a 1641cc turbo injected motor that would have easily run this time you are chasing i imagine.
i have read of many 1916's runnig this.
just make sure whatever you do you do it properly. otherwise you might regret it down the track.

Because of the gearing they had-the Chargers(E49) were quicker on the 1/4 mile. With modern tyres the times would drop a little more.To get a bug in the 13 teens would not be that complex-you just have to talk to people with experience and do your research-Hp costs money,so do it right the first time
