1971 beetle Gearbox question

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/52685/1971-beetle-gearbox-question

hipichic ·

Will a 1971 1300 gearbox fit in to a 1973 beetle ok? we've noticed that the axle setup is different, are there any hints and tips for taking the bits off and fitting it to the 1973 setup?

VWCOOL ·

If the axle setup is different, as you say, it will not fit without extensive componet changes to the gearbox or suspension

Bizarre ·

Yours is a curved screen?

Pretty sure it was. Otherwise it was a Super beetle anyway.

Waht ever - sure you have IRS

A 1971 1300 will be a swing axle

2 entirley different set ups

Sorry,
The late Independant Rear Suspension [IRS] is totally different to the swing axle rear suspension...

Its NOT impossible....
but it would be a lot easier to fix Your gearbox....
Most people wouldn't try it....
Its a Major project....

You need a gearbox from a 1971-72 1302S Superbug or from 73-75 1303S Superbug or a 1976 Beetle...
these all had IRS rear end with Constant Velocity Joints.

cheers

Ok, thanks for the answers 🙂
do you think the guts of the gearbox would be the same, could we just change the housing over maybe?

Bizarre ·

What is the matter with yours??

That is a lot of work what you are saying. Gear boxes require special tools and work. It is not a matter of "just" spanner work.
For $250 you will buy a brilliant 2nd hand single side plate IRS box - maybe even as cheap as $150

hipichic ·

mine is crunchy, it's almost impossible to change down to second.
I give up. We bought a car for the motor and gearbox and were under the (obviously mistaken) impression that we could use both.
*sigh*
cars give me the irits sometimes.

Bizarre ·

can you double shuffle???

MUCH cheaper :sandrine

hipichic ·

what's double shuffling??
if you mean putting the clutch in, putting the car in neutral, popping the clutch giving it a rev and then putting the clutch back in and putting the car into gear....
I already do that :S
If you don't mean that...ignore everything i just typed...🤪

You can convert that tranny to IRS but the gearing will have the engine reving harder.
This assumes that it is an original 1300 tranny from the 70's, (60's trannys are a little different).
The parts will bolt in, but the crownwheel will have to be assembled with the correct
tooth clearance of its mating gear(backlash) and the side cover with some preload on the tapered bearings.
Most times nothing needs changing in this area but it should be checked either way....15mm to .25mm backlash.
I use .25mm preload on the side cover too, but this will reduce as the bearings wear.
The parts should interchange, and should be straight forward.
The only work you should have to do is under the side cover, total dissasssembly should not be required.
But remember how old these trannys are...35 years of abuse!...it will most likely need other work at some point.
