Howdy peeps,
I am currently in the process of designing an interior for my new 76 kombi and was wondering if it is possible to use seating/bedding from a caravan in a kombi. I have seen rock and roll beds for sale but was looking around for a possible cheaper alternative. Has anyone done this before? I'm guessing I would have to drill some news holes for the seating. I want the kombi to be a semi camper (no pop top) and a cruiser as it will be my daily driver. Thanks in advance

Mate, in a Kombi, jusyt about anythings possible interiorwise... there are zillions of ways to set up a camper interior. You just have to be willing to do the appropriate planning and modifications to the van or furniture to make it fit right. 馃憤
Saying that tho, it would depend upon how many people you intended it to seat... I doubt any seating/bedding from a caravan would be considered legal for passenger carrying purposes whilst on the road. :o
So if you intend to use any caravan bits, expect to only carry yourself and 1 or 2 passengers... depending on whether you have a bench seat. 馃檪

Thanks for the reply Kieran, I never thought about the legal side of it. I will just have to plan it better and perhaps look at frames people have already used in their kombis. Thanks for the heads up

Rock 'n' Roll beds are not too hard to come by. I got our one for free from a VW place, I just had to take it out myself. 馃檪

no prob mate hehe... a kombi in need is a kombi indeed! 馃憤
It would be perfectly legal if you only intended to sleep on it, but I believe if seatbelts are fitted to the seats, they must be approved for road use first by the appropriate body, or the vehicle will not pass rego until the belts are removed... after which the seats are not considered to be legal for carrying passengers...
It will work, but I would be inclined to put in a seat/bed assembly which is approved for passenger use... for practicalities sake. 馃檪
I think your best bet would be to find a camper that is being wrecked and flog the back foldout bed, seatbelts and rear apron matress out of it... at least that way its all kosher when the Vicroads men or the fuzz look at it. 馃憤

Wow, thanks for all the info.
Anyone wrecking a camper in Melbourne and want to get rid of the back foldout bed, seatbelts and rear apron matress?

Just like mine dude. The best combination. I never have passengers in the back but love the freedom of the cruising and camping option.

I know where you can get rock and roll hinges from.
They are a right pig to fit though.
IMHO and I have a RnR I think the seatup where you have seats that have more bits of wood to make a bed a possibly better as you have to keep moving the stuff in the back of the van to lie down.
Fit seatbelts too. my wife was in the back and I had to break suddenly (honestly) and she came right of the seat to the floor
