Salt lake 2ltr.

Need to start assembling engine parts for the lakester project.
I was going to base the engine on the 2ltr Kombi case. The requirement is a 3 mile runup, 3 mile timed and another 3 for rundown. Want to run methanol and blower using a primative draw through system, no electronics. Kinda old school. Hope to run close to 150 MPH at about 450kgs. What do you think would be a nice engine combo? Suggestions on blowers? Would an engine capable of this require anything other than ram air for cooling?

on that line of thinking, i've gotta say 'cubes'....

i reckon it'll have more to do with getting the gear ratios right so that you get the most of whatever power you have.

what kinda body/chassis are you using?
i love the salt racer stuff, a guy at work goes to S.A. every year in a big old bus to race a '28 ford.... they've done about 175-180mph in it...

Need to run 2ltr. Belly tank construction.

Bug_racer ·

I'll be out there in a few years hoping to crack 200mph . Its pretty expensive to get the stability of a car at that speed right .

Do you have dates on roughly when it is ?

dangerous ·

You will get that with a stock 2lt with a cam change.
Blower wise see what you can find.
Henry has my old Godfrey-Marshall roots set-up and a very nice replacement
unit that is in much better shape....he has for sale...he is HS618 in this forum.
Let me know when you start what you might need to know regarding fuel system and camshaft.
Man you could achieve that with a 1776 and volksy case...cool!

vw54 ·

theres no subsitute for Cubes n Bumps

What about a classic Judson it might give you about 7 Lb if your lucky

Tall Wheels n tyres are required n a long run up say 3 miles

HotRodMatt ·

Forget the draw thru set up, mechanical injection is the way - and you are gonna have to move a hell of a lot of methanol!

what about running special size pots or an offset ground crank to bring it right up to 2L?

BTW, love the idea.

Doug Sweetman ·

For mine, I'd be going with the Toyo 1GGZE blower, pick your max revs (6500 ? depending on bottom / top end combo I guess) and overdrive such that you run the blower at near its max reccomended revs at redline. This at least gives you a budget option - these blowers are usually easily available for $350 to $500 mark.

And yes, lots of Methanol 🙂

If you got the ducting set up right, and didnt spend too much time idling around, I would think the ram air cooling would be OK - certainly the methanol fed speed car motors never used to run cooling fans, and they were worked very hard, lots of WOT etc.

Do you have a name for the car yet ? Speed record cars always need a name....

have you started work on the body/chassis yet? or is the whole thing still on the drawing board?

couldn't you just use an f-vee chassis with a few mods?

i love the idea! there's a distinct lack of volkswagens on the salt.

M90 supercharger? From a 3.8ltr

barenyisbeetle ·

if its that satin black 356 with the flying pegasus; go the su carbie turbo set up.

dangerous ·

That M90 is a nicely machined unit, but is a pain to rebuild.
If you can afford to carry a spare, it is an affordable option, but may be limited with boost.

dangerous ·

Been thinking...
I would use a dry sump system, 1800 type 4 crank with counterweights, and larger bore with forgies (98mm).
You can use mechanical injection thru an old 2port hilborn deal and run port nozzles if the distrobution is sad.
Ram air should be OK if it is concentrated on the heads.
I have a free 3-71 blower if you want real old school, but it will need race prepping.

dude, you should open a shop! :duh

speedster356 ·

Off to NZ next week to pick up the belly tank :thumb and also have a look at the Graham Mcrae Spyder business which is up for sale again.

dangerous ·

Oooohhh! Spiffy!

vw54 ·

where r u storing this by the way

speedster356 ·

Hmmmm, is this safe to be towing around the countryside, I'd hate to end up on some sort of terrorist charge?

speedster356 ·

Dave I'd be interested in the 371. If the rotors are OK will it just need bearings and seals?
I had a look at Peter Gumleys type 4 open wheeler with Whipple supercharger. It has 2 small round plenums on each head and a small (1/2" deep) one under the s/c. Is this a common setup, is it just to allow the s/c to be mounted low over the case or does it have other advantages?

HotRodMatt ·

I guess you'll be looking at /BFL, FL, BGL, or GL?

Or are you gonna enclose the wheels and go for a streamer?

speedster356 ·

Both gas and fuel classes Matt.:thumb

dangerous ·

Yes that is all it needs Pete..it is very old off a diesel, but never raced.
I would say that his plenums are like that (low) just to keep everythong down close to the case.
Screw blowers dont really need a plenum to absorb the pulses like a roots blower traditionally has.
Reality is though that the screw does pulse, and the rootes does too but in a different way.
But it seems that a plenum is an easy way to join a big flat flange under a blower, to to some tubes that lead to the heads.
Try to keep the plenum as small as possible without restricting flow.
Mike K has done a brilliant job with his one on Cranky.

dangerous ·

I will bring it to warwick with me if you want it...I am delivering some screww blowers too....😀

HotRodMatt ·

Shhhh.

speedster356 ·

Looks like Blown Fuel Lakester (G/BFL) is still without a record so that might be the one to run for. G/BGL (gas)currently stands at 204 MPH.

With a tow car like that, you are most definately a terrorist target!

speedster356 ·

It seems smaller than I thought!:P

I think there will have to be some modifications done

2914cc type 4 donk
Hilborn injection 3inch throttle body
Nitrous oxide
48mm intake 40mm exhaust valves
isky 322 cam and scat 1:1.25 rockers
lead weights to keep the front down!!!
(curbweight 2500lbs)

it does:
150mph in a 65 beetle body

schadek (sp) make a neat dry sump pump. I used a modified one as a turbo scavenge pump.

speedster356 ·

All the 4130 tube has gone off for bending, I'll get the pieces back during the week and and I should have the basic cage/chassis tacked next weekend if the tube notcher arrives. I've split the tank along the waist line and around the cockpit area. Wheelbase is 3000mm with standard rear track and a slightly wider front. The front single beam is a straight 2" x 0.188" 4130 tube. The rest of the cage is 1 5/8" x 0.095" 4130. :beer

Hi Pete,

We can talk some more about tyres.

The maximum speed rating on the tyre is applicable to the maximum load rating. I assume your car will be light which means it shouldn't be a problem exceeding the speed rating. It might also be an idea to have the tyres buffed down to help them deal with the heat. It's kind of like a more sophisticated version of what Burn Monroe idi in the movie The World's Fastest Indian. His tyres were only G-rated and he cut the tread off with a knife.

speedster356 ·

Just ordered the tube notcher only $390. Went 1/2 with a mate so it works out very reasonable.

speedster356 ·

All the bent 4130 tube for the cage/chassis was picked up today, the next step is to make the 8 ply bulkheads that will hold the body sections in position so I can lay out the chassis during construction. Then notch and tack the tubes to suit.

Will Pete McLeod become the next motorsport victim?

whatnow ·

that looks like lots of fun...

what is the drop tank off? it's an unusual shape.

edit. plus it seems really long.

[ Edited on 11-10-2006 by whatnow ]

speedster356 ·

Yeah I've removed a straight section from the center to shorten it. It looks to be from an A6 Intruder but I'm buggered if I can work out how it came to be in NZ. Might have been available on Skyhawks?

whatnow ·

did the US carriers visit NZ in the pre "no nukes" days?

A6's are a US naval vietnam era on aircraft aren't they.

ps dig the 144... volvo's rock! seriously... my second favorate marque after VW's
pps if it's a grandlux model can i have your g'box and OD?
