Hi guys!
I want to buy a porsche fan conversion kit for my type 1 motor. Anyone has one for sale? Any recomendation? Apparently all the ones in the market are different like from FAT, Bernie Bergman, CSP and so on......
Anyone have any experience with Sharpbuilt kit for type 1?
Help please.
Cheers!
John

Try V force , I am sure they have them
62ragtop ·
Will try them. Thanks mate!
Anyone else?
malcolm ·
John try Porscheaparts I got my fan and surround for $300 they did have a complete unit with alternator for $1200.I,m looking at using a early golf alternator it has the same shaft size.cheers Malcolm.
62ragtop ·
Mal, where the hell are they? Can't seems to find them on yellowpages or whitepages. You have once given me a card but i can't find it.......
66deluxe ·
Aporschapart 5-7 Spray Ave Mordialloc Vic # 03 95875260, The golf alternator will wear out quick due to incorrect bearing.
empi ·
Yep with an "A" in front.
malcolm ·
thanks 66 is it due to the extra load of the fan or cooling to the alternator.
62ragtop ·
Thnaks for that 66deluxe, what is the correct alternator fo it then? How many amps are they originally?
66deluxe ·
You can get Aussie made alternators for them, from aporschapart just look at the number cast into the stator ring of the fan assembly and quote that and thay can supply correct unit. I bought one for mine and they are a great unit. The original french made ones work but are known to shit themselves and are quite expensive to repair. As for amps i can't remember but they produce way more than the originals, i sold my kit to buy a DTM from Jake Raby of aircooled technology in the states. My 911 Sharpbuilt kit cost over $2k, and was a pain in the arse to fit, so i sold it and got the DTM, it cools better and fits much easier and also was way cheaper even with currency conversion. As for the golf alternator it's a radial bearing versus an axial bearing or vice versa. Hope this helps, cheers Damo.
62ragtop ·
66deluxe, do you mind telling me how much you paid for your DTM landed in Australia?
66deluxe ·
It was about $1200 for the stage 2 type 4 kit, there is a sale on at the moment on all DTM's and i think the type 1 kit is around $400 US, just go to The type 4 store or Aircooled technology site for more info.
62ragtop ·
Mailed them 66deluxe. Thanks for the info mate.
hypo-vw ·
I have fitted several Sharpbuilt kits to both type-1 and type-4 engines and they are very well manufactured . Here is a pic of the last 1776 turbo Ghia engine that I did , fitted with a type-1 porsche fan kit .
Thanks hypo-vw and andrewmurphy for the info, great job wayne. might have to talk to you soon......hehe...
62ragtop ·
hypo-vw, can the sharpbuilt kit's oil filler be change to a shorter one? (Black colour) I like it shorter as it looks out of place in a small type one engine bay. Also issit a bolt on kit or i need to do any modification to my type 1 case?
66deluxe ·
The type 1 kit is bolt on, the fan bracket bolts to the existing alternator stand positon on the type 1 case.
62ragtop ·
but can the oil filler neck be change to a shorter one? Black colour oil filler in hype-vw's first pic.
humpty ·
Thats a TIV/waterboxer oil filler I think.... Im sure you could use any type you like and shorten it if you want.....
62ragtop ·
thanks mate........took me awhile to find that out.
VWCOOL ·
Hypo, does the Sharp 911 kit keep the oil cooler in the stock location? No lines etc?

The TIV kits does use the OEM oil cooler in the stock location.... Obviously this is not the case with the TI kit!!!
VWCOOL ·
Um, doesn't look real obvious to me... I'd prefer to keep the cooler mounted to the block like stock - no oil lines - with a 911 style fan. The Penrose/Sharp pic doesn't seem to show that
humpty ·
None of the TI kits use the oil cooler mounted in the stock location.... the top of the shroud is not very deep in that position.... Just can't be done..... But you could mod a TIII to fit I guess.... But that would mean cutting up the shroud to make it fit.....
VWCOOL ·
The DTM ones (I think that was the mob) do...
There's an extra duct down the left 'face' of the fibreglass housing to feed the Kombi cooler. Couldn't see that on the Sharp kit...
The DTM style shrouds are totally different to the Porsche style shrouds.... The DTM looks kinda like a OEM VW shroud, but uses a centrifical style fan I think... And the cooler take-off come out of the top of the shroud and wraps down behind the shroud to the oil cooler...
As above - Sharp seems to have it 'sorted' with his 911-fanned T4 kits

Look up sharpbuilt website............its obvious there.
62ragtop ·
definitely cannot use the original oil cooler, you will need an external oil cooler for sharp type 1 conversion.

That's about three people that have said that.. wrong!!!
As the pic above shows, Sharp's 911-to-T4 conversion keeps the stock cooler in the stock location!
humpty ·
We all said the Porsche Shroud TI kit does not use the OEM oilcooler location.... And the Porsche Shroud TIV kit does allow the use of the OEM oilcooler location.... There is major differences between the kits...... The DTM kit is a different kettle'o'fish.... And I think the DTM is only available for the TIV engines....
humpty ·
Yes.... The TI Porsche shroud kit as sold by Sharp Built doesn't allow for the use of the OEM oilcooler to be fitted in the OEM location (the TIV kit does)..... But I think a TIII style oilcooler could be made to work with some creative shroud mods.... Getting sufficient airflow could be a problem though.....
Remember... We are talking about the engines here.... Not the car it is to be fitted to.... It is common knowledge that these kits are designed to be fitted to a stock bug engine bay.... whether you choose to fit it to a bug, bus or buggy is irrelevant.....
This is the sharp built kit.... no oilcooler adapter here.....

its a good idea but you don,t want to preheat the air to the cylinders
humpty ·
But VWCOOL was asking about the Sharp Built kits....
And so was the OG author....

The VVWS idea looks interesting, but I don't know how effective it would be..... Dunno anyone who has used that method..... All the kats that have used a Porsche style shroud that I know, have used an external cooler......
62ragtop ·
Yes, i was asking about TYPE 1 engine conversion kit and as far as i know, it has to use external oil cooler. But i might be wrong as different kits has different design, but for sure sharpbuilt ones do not allow original oil cooler.
Damn Humpty, you reminded me about Australia game......
malcolm ·
john got a fan and housing yet
humpty ·
62ragtop wrote:Damn Humpty, you reminded me about Australia game......
Well... I do try to help where I can!
:kiss
malcolm ·
if your going to the trouble of using a porsche fan use a external oil cooler and don,t pre heat cylinders.Hey I,ve got 1 in my garage some were.😵
humpty ·
I know thats what I'll be doing.... But this engine that I'm building now will need more oilcooling.... Its a EFI Turbo/intercooled engine..... It'll need all the help it can get!
malcolm ·
ecu go with Altronic,s best boost control dry sump plenty of oil remove as much alloy from the head so heat wont st in it and finally cryogenically treat the engine parts type 4 turbocharged in hilman imp 350hp.
humpty ·
LOL.... I thought you said "type 4 turbocharged in hilman imp 350hp"......
karmen ·
just in case
i have one of those early Golf alternators (ks unknown)
also a Golf extra oil cooler about afoot square
pics if u want.
also a rx7 mazda oilcooler which came of a 1835 tp worked engine as an auxilliary.boses and clamps incl.
open to offers on the lot or part if any good.
cheers
aussiepost is quite good with bulk items
i just bag them in padding and are usually halfprice to fancy boxes etc

Um no the 3 people are RIGHT, you can not use the oil cooler in its original position on the T1 conversion.
VWCOOL ·
err, yes, but my question - sorry to jump in on the thread - was for T4 donk/911 fan and whether the cooler could stay in stock location
So,
T1/911 fan - must mount/use external cooler/lines
T4/911 fan - cooler stays in T4 stock location
T4/T1 upright fan - cooler/lines to relocate to T1 location
Is that right?
I thought/assumed Penrose's engine was a T4; that may have confused things a bit
humpty ·
Sounds about right to me..... Though I think with some of the other brand TIV/911 conversions you have the option of oilcooler fitment.... Not sure about the Sharpbuilt jobbie....
shiftyvw ·
there is a 911 fan shroud conversion for type 1 motors that keeps the oil cooler mounted in the shroud, laying flat over the engine case. Dont know who the manufacturer is but i can ask the owner if he knows. It definatly exists though!!
humpty ·
Yeah we have talked about that.... Bernie Bergman does it I think... At least I know he offers (optioned?) it on the TI/911 kit.... I think that VVDS use to offer something like that, which was Richard Holzl's (VForce) design I think.... Not sure if Boris still offers it and I don't know if Richard's kit still uses it either.... But I do wonder about how effective it would be in that local given that it is sitting directly over the crankcase....
62ragtop ·
good point......anyone has a mesa 96 plate external oil cooler with fan for sale? Let me know....
berserkerbus ·
62 ragtop- There is a bloke Joe Cali, who has a very informative manual out about upright conversions. It has pictures and can be ordered online at web address. This method uses type 1- Beetle parts with minor modifications.
berserkerbus, thanks for the info but i cannot find anything about type 1 conversion to porsche style fan.
I think i will buy sharpbuilt since is in Australia and i support oz!
humpty ·
Have you rung VForce? Richard has just made a batch of shrouds up?
62ragtop ·
thanks mate, will ring them tomorrow....
malcolm ·
john I got a price on fan & shroud give us a call.
humpty ·
Picked up my VForce shroud from Postman Pat today.... Its basic and not entirely complete, but for the bux Im not complaining.... I still need to sort a few minor things to bring it up to scratch.... Just minor finishing really, which is appropriate given the possible engine combo's it needs to fit..... I do plan to modify it further though, as the design does not consider the perimeter engine bay seals.
The DVD of Deiter doing his thing at Wakefield is pretty cool though!
