ah what the heck, let's rattle people's cages a bit. I'm feeling a bit frisky :bounce

Now to answer your question Chris...

It's not the problem of human nature.

The problem is, we are not as we were intended to be. Humans don't live according to their nature.

There you go, chew on that for a while.

bajachris88 ·

Hehe, debate can be fun :P

I have to agree, being a student of a topic in relation to humans modding their nature. We have none! Do we? :S its interesting, people base the last 100 yrs of humans crappiness to the world as human nature without any review of previous human culture.

what about traditional aboriginals, they were good when it came to the environment and protection of it.

hope i get the right jist and nibblin abit on it.

I'm not so sure about if humans were intended to 'be' anything. If we were as we're supposedly intended to be, then we'd perpetually be in the status quo. In other words, we'd forever be nomadic hunters & gatherers.
If there is a God and he created us to be like that, what purpose does that serve? Are we the goldfish bowl on the almighty's office desk, there for him to stare at when he wants to space out from the workday boredom?:bounce

I'd be open to new ideas, but I find all the religions way too restrictive. Being able to think for yourself is something that too many people don't want to do for some reason :S
I like the idea of the 8 armed elephant heads though.:P

pete wood ·

Wild1 wrote:hehe, personally I don't believe in a God.. why would any god let humans create something like this?!:P
undoubtedly, that car is one of the best indicators of the presence of evil in this world. 😀

I don't think you can deny that evil seems to be at odds with the way thing should work. I mean it doesn't seem right that your friends should die of cancer. It doesn't seem right that our VWs wears out and rusts...we all know that is not right. 👍

BTW, The whole "Science VS God" debate is a red hering.

If God is really God, then he is God over all creation and that means he is the God of science too. Chew on that one...😉

Wild1 ·

pete wood wrote:BTW, The whole "Science VS God" debate is a red hering.

So things only make sense if there is no God, for then it will not be in conflict with what has been proven true...😁

pete wood ·

No More like this...

At some level you have to explain where things come from and how they work. There are all sorts of ways of doing this, the bible for instance, is one way and the science is another.

However, science and the bible are designed to give different sorts of information, so at many levels they actually don't disagree, because they are seeking answer different questions.

The issues of God and his control over the world is generally about the WHYs rather than the HOWs. Science wants to know, "HOW do things work?" Not so much, WHY things work. Scientific method can only ever show you known processes and the statistical chance of them happening again. So science can tell you HOW human beings occur and grow (well to a certain extent anyway), but God can tell you WHY we exist to begin with.

So you see, they are not at odds with each other, they have completely different tasks. It's just that some people have agendas and use one or the other as ammunition for attacking other's positions.

As a Christian, I agree with a lot things the scientific community has to say. But even if I disagree, it's generally more about theories they pursue rather than the raw data they use to assemble them with. Science is good, it's blessed us in many ways. Engineering, medicine, the list goes on...but there are limits to what science can do.

So in short....

Science can only tell you HOW things happened (and to a limited extent), it can't make sense of them or tell you WHY. 😉

pete wood wrote:So in short....

Very true, and I completely agree on that point.

It's just my personal opinion (and feel free to attack it, it's always a bit of fun 😀), but if you look at the history of religions, they all aim to do one thing - explain that which we do not know. So essetially they were created to complement science, for that which science could not explain, they used religion.
Many may laugh at earlier religions, as they seemed nonsensical, but this is only because they aimed to explain things which were not known, but we assume to be common knowledge today. It is in human nature to be afraid of the unknown, so religions of some kind were inevitable and existent at pretty much every stage of human development.

I personally do not believe in any particular religion as I find it restrictive, especially as every religion has some form of 'sin' or something which is frowned upon. This is especially evident in the Catholic Church's views on contraception (and I'll admit that most of the seven deadly sins are great fun :P).

So I believe (again, only my opinion) that we will be an 'intelligent species' once we get to the point where we no longer need religion, and there will be very little left that is unknown. Although I doubt that we will see that day anytime in the near future.
It also follows therefore, that when a religion clashed with or contradicts science, it is outdated, and we need to come up with a new one more suited to the current situation.

Hmm... maybe that was a can of worms? 🤪

I assert that there is a huge brick wall at the end of the universe.... a brick wall with particularly red bricks and particularly white grout....

Beyond this wall is a room painted a pastel yellow, in which can be found a table surrounded by giant mooses resembling Bullwinkle, who sit around said table wearing poker visors, playing cards... 🤪 🤓

pete wood ·

What you say about religion in primitive societies is true. It was a means to explain things they didn't have the answer for.

What you've said next I find very interesting, cause it's an idea that isn't new.
Wild1 wrote:So I believe (again, only my opinion) that we will be an 'intelligent species' once we get to the point where we no longer need religion, and there will be very little left that is unknown. Although I doubt that we will see that day anytime in the near future.

Starting in the 18th and through the 19th and 20th centuries we had what we might call the movement of Atheistic Modernism. This movement used science to push it's barrow. It was based on a few things. One of them was this, "God is not real", "people are basically good", the other was, "evil comes from misunderstanding". Therefore, once we understand nature and science and educate people the world will be what it should be. They then said what you said,

"when a religion clashed with or contradicts science, it is outdated, and we need to come up with a new one more suited to the current situation." OR get rid of them all together because they are too restrictive.

By the beginning of the 20th century we had most of the great scientific breakthroughs we take for granted today. Then came the 2nd world war. Modernists were appalled at how educated, civilized germans could kill millions of Jews, Gypsies, nuns and monks, priests and people with dissabilities. How could Germans, a country at the centre of Modernism, who understand about science and the world commit such barbaric attrocities?

The answer is this, the problems of this world cannot be fixed by understanding biological, physical and chemical processes better. There is something deeper. So the western world went nuts, rejected antheism and modernisim and we had the 1960's. People rejected the pure science of modernism and went looking for spiritual answers to why the world sucked because modernism and science had failed. That's why all of a sudden in the late 20th century we had new religions in the west like Hari Krishnas and Scientology to name a few. Because people want answers and they know now that science cannot provide those sorts of answers.

P.s. Schmo, stop smoking all that pot. 👎

Well that was a waste of time!

What a hopelessly put together collection of thin cliches. "And I'd also like to thank the Hubble telescope..."

btw: let's not do the whole 'God' discussion (especially if you're going to refer to it as 'he'). It's almost impossible to resolve as it's not an authentic debate. Christians aren't willing to be persuaded, merely to reinforce their own views or use the wild card 'faith' when things get hairy. Next thing you'll be ending it with: "I'm entitled to my opinion".

bajachris88 ·

We will never know the universe, and a million of sciences greatest discoveries are only theories, not facts. 😀

Lesson learned.

Hmmmm...I'd give you my condolences Chris..... but we were taught in pre-school that water and electricity don't mix... soooo... HAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....CHRIS GOT AN ELECTRIC SHOOOCK...HAHAHAHAA...SUCKED IN!!!!! 😂 😁

Chris, only idiots and experienced tradesmen use power tools in the wet. which one are you? no let me guess...:duh

bajachris88 ·

It was under the firewall, so it wasn't getting soaked, just moisture. but took a split second to move it out and the run off from the rain going down the side of the bug went on it. there after, i used it for another 3 hrs, in the wet, freezing, wearing nothing bug a light shirt and stubbies, and was no trouble. The plug was elevated off the ground (was already), hooked on the firewall away from water. The extension cable was water proof quality, as it was used during camping. I didn't go in half assed!! Hehe

It was just an acident. tomorrow i need to work out a shelter for it for me to work under.

[ Edited on 20/6/2006 by bajachris88 ]

no plug is waterproof... some will make it harder for water to get into...but it isnt expected you will use it in the rain if at all avoidable.

and just because the cord is water-resistant, doesnt mean the tool is. 🤓

So your still an idiot! 😂

powertool + water + chris=...

Schmoburger ·

bajachris88 ·

lol, can u see my bug in there? its somewhere in there hehe.

Well, lesson learned. the plugs and grinder were sheltered, it was just when i took it out for that split second. but nothing major happened, thats all that matters. My brain and common sense is sludge after finally completing my assignments and exam.

You can't blame it for being switched off can ya? hehe.

Schmoburger ·

Nope...the bug aint there...ya know why???.. cos it just fell through the roof of my living room! 😂

helbus ·

I am concerned about what may happen when you start welding Chris?

bajachris88 ·

I wouldn't dare use on in the rain. was only thinking that earlier.

hey, for some reason, when i was grinding, i came across this brass metal on the steel in the rear. what is it?

pete wood ·

Hi Uboat,

you're certainly keen on discussing this then. 🙂

Been reading the Da Vinci code by any chance?

You're right, Christianity is not the newest kid on the block, but it's precursor Judaism is one of the oldest faiths in history.

BTW, before you answer this can you go back and read my other posts, most of what you have asked I dealt with earlier.

[ Edited on 21-6-06 by pete wood ]

pete wood ·

ok, I can see where this debate is heading again. Just like last time. Allow me to short circuit it.

Dan Brown and most other peoples attack on Christianity centres on two things. The bible's authenticity and the people who run the church. We can argue about those infinitem and never come up with an answer. Let me offer a different solution...

Christianity is based on the teaching and life of Jesus. Both of those thing are recorded in the bible, in particular in the gospels. We are told at the beginning of these books, by the authors, why the books have been written. Just like Da Vinci Code. Now many of us read that book and were willing to give it a fair reading and make up our own minds. I suggest the same thing with the bible.

To anyone who is interested, I will email a copy of the gospel of Mark. The second book in the new testament and its not very long. Read through for yourself and decide for yourself. Do you think the people who recorded these events are telling the truth? If they are, what does that mean?

Don't worry about what you have heard elsewhere, just give it a fair reading and decide for yourself. That's all I ask.

u2u me your email if you want a copy of Mark.

Feel free for this discussion. Its interesting.

Cause i went to a catholic school for 12 yrs, we been looking into this stuff for yonks.

Historians have actually found ancient scrolls by the shores of the red sea containing info on the census's that have taken place within that area of the middle east. These census's have actually confirmed Christ's existance.

The plural for census, is is census's ? Neah. u get the drift.

pete wood ·

let's not get off track Chris. How bout I email you the stuff.

bajachris88 ·

no worries mate.

Got a few bibles lying around here. What we trying to look for when it comes to Mark in the new testament? (when u send us it?)

they say that all the disciples wrote in different styles about the same thing. Apparently matthew's was the easiest to read, Luke was very.. well i can't remember, but there was something where they told the story through different perspectives.

pete wood ·

you have email Chris.

mark is 2nd book in the New Testament.

Hey pete, read the Gospel of Mark u sent me, was a long read. Neva read it all at once before. It was some very interesting material, and its been able 6 months since i have refreshed on it (since i graduated). Thanks for that mate. Bit of a faith booster for me.

The way it is written, the chronology of it all poses very realistic. along with the Dead sea scrolls (with the census, or was it Red Sea?) I was educated about at school in religion.

Christianity is based on Christ, otherwise its Judaism etc.

I know there are alot of non-believers, each to their own though. As long as everyone strives to have respect, morals, love and care for each other, i'm sure the big man (God) would be happy either way, whether they believe or not. Its something we should all strive for inside each other, regardless of beliefs. :kiss

well said Chris! Although I'm an Atheist I don't deny that there very well could be a higher power of some form and I think faith is something everyone needs. As long as everyone is accepting and tolerant, there really shouldn't be any reason why everyone can't get along..
