The later guards are wider to cover the different offset wheels. Although, the situation might be that my car has had a 'repro' guard fitted - the left is a full inch narrower than the factory original right!!

karmen ·
vw cool
but Karmen (me) wants to know the width of your guard to know if what mine is
as i got it in a box of unlabelled stuff, Dave
app the width nr the run board varies
VWCOOL ·
karmen - thanks, but I'll get one in Syd so don't waste your time and effort bringing one down. I'm not sure what;s what with these widths; a few people reckon mine is a cheapo repro manufactured from modified 6V Beetle stamps/dies, rather than proper late-model presses...
karmen ·
hey am comin down anyway and $70 if it fits

I never noticed that width difference GT. :duh
karmen ·
on a closer look i'd be suggestin u measure the running boards too
seem diff width there not the guard.....
learn somethin nu on avd too !!
vw54 ·
I dont believe that there were 2 different guards 4 the 75 / 76 models it may have been bent outwards at some time or the oppisite one bent inwards
Strange things can happen to 40 years old cars

30 yrs Dave

that's coz u had skinny wheels! 😉 The difference becomes real apparent with different offset 6-inchers

The difference becomes real apparent with different offset 6-inchers
Stock VWs only had 4.5 inch wheels and as an option you could get some 5.5 sports wheels
you must have after market guards or home made widies

Wheels fit just under the guard on one side, but sticks out an inch on the other... I now think one guard is an aftermarket replacement
Bizarre ·
Maybe you have different offset wheels??? :bounce
