SirDelton ·

VW running gear & a Subura Engine.

I want to modify the Body shape abit? Maybe..
But I have been told it was a prototype that was never released so I'm wondering if I should leave it as is?

Any feed back welcomed..

Car is currently in storage while I get some cash together to start work on it.

What is the history??
Who built it??

BTW... where are you?? Qld??

they look like old ford lights?! hehe

mackaymanx ·

Yeah I agree, XD lights by the look

VWCOOL ·

Get rid of that chrome wheelarch shit and the gay 80s pinstripes and it might look kinda okay!

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

what is it?

SirDelton ·

To answer "Bizarre" Yes I'm in Brisbane.
The car is a Paragon.
It must have been made by a Ford fan as it users Ford parts. Crappy Laser Dash (Which is one thing I want to get rid of)

The wife wants to paint it Candy Apple Red, Totally redo the inside & maybe replace the seats.

I want to install bigger Disc brakes all ends & fit 19 or 20 inch Mags (This is going to be the hardest part I guess as the offset & stud pattern maybe an issue)

The engine is the next part I will need to look at as it currently has an R18 Subura engine & I don't know if they are worth doing up.
As I said it is a long term project that I'm in no hurry to complete.. 👍

ColumBUS ·

19- 20 inch mags will see your ride height sky high...

sit it on some 17's and you'll be sweet.
remove the r 18 and add an ej 22 or ej 20T for the grunt.

no matter what your gonna do to it, its gonna be an awesome unique ride. hang on to it mate, heres hoping the cash rolls in quick and we can see that on the road!

DUB54V ·

i like it..... put a flux capacitor on it and go into the future

empi ·

Man thats pretty cool , can we have some more pic please..
love the pinstriping.

I still think sell the dog

The car currently looks like a 4WD it sits that high off the road. I believe the guy who owned it lived out in the stick & used the car as an everyday traveller till he got to old to get in & out of it. The seats are flat on the floor, so you are sitting on the floor.. Head room is still an issue.

so I believe there should be a couple of inches in ride hieght I can still drop? Sorry I know very little about VW's ( That is way I'm here.. )

I've had the car for almost a year now so I'm just about ready to start work on it. The Engine that is in it runs (Kind of..) & the old man thinks it maybe the dual carbys need a rebuild kit & balance. I think I will start with that & see if the motor has any life.

Brakes are the 1st area I want to work on & there is a kit available here in Brisbane that have sets available.

Link to Brakes

If anybody has any other option or has used these I would like to hear from you.

The petrol Tank also needs replacing so I'm also on the lookout for a new fuel cell or replacement Stainless steel unit.

Cheers
SD

bond ·

i think if you lowered it on 18s or 19s it would probly remain a similar ride height to where its at now - and look unbeleivable! - plenty of room in the wheel arch!

custom are good for alot of the stuff you're looking into getting done - ie: ej22, brakes, lowering etc. - i recommended this to another gentleman on here named mick (sinecure) (who recently acquired a sabre mkII kit on a type 3 chassis with what i remember to be a ea81 also) - that it might be an idea to pop down (book first lol) and get them to put it on the hoist so you know exactly what you've got! ie:pan, beams etc, box

i think depending on what you've got mick is learning about kits and dubs at a phenominal rate - especially with regards to legalities, offsets of wheels etc and would be a useful source external to a business...

is good that you're in brisbane too! - we'll all be at Harry's diner this friday night (june 23) - should come along for a chat - and let the learning curve begin 🙂

ps. the chrome strip and pinstripes look the biz! haha

pete wood ·

that looks awesome, but yes, it definitely needs an EJ subaru motor and some big wheels.😎

sinecure ·

LOVE it!!

Please come to Harrys on friday night. Barring that, contact me on al356037@bigpond.net.au and we'll hook up to have a good look at that beauty. I'm in contact with most of the kit car people in Aus and would love to help you get some more info on this car.

If you don't mind, I'll rip these pics and send them around to see if anyone knows anything about it.

And I reckon the chrome wheel arch moulds and pinstripes look great. DON'T mod the body till we have some more info.

Look forward to hearing from you, and thanks to Nick for the heads up on this post!

Cheers,

Mick.

sinecure ·

Looks a bit like a Lancia to my eye.

sinecure ·

If its on a type3 pan, lowering it will take some tools and a days work.

sinecure ·

If you're going to change Brake discs, then get the new ones studded in a 114.3 mm x 5 stud pattern. This is the most common stud pattern on cars in Aus and will make choice of wheels much simpler (and cheaper!)

sinecure ·

And if it's a dual carb EA81, hang on to it. These are as rare as rocking horse droppings.

Another bit cheaper option on the rear disc brakes is John Sherman on the GC, but both kits have been recommended to me by everybody as top notch.

If the fuel tank in the front is custom, make sure you get a qualified engineer to build and approve the replacement. If it's a standard type3 (like mine) then a second-hand one would be another option. Can the tank be removed for inspection?

sinecure ·

Or could be based on an 80's Lotus Espirit.

Update on the Car...

Engine is a "EA71" Twin Carb.

Does anybody here know of a way to find out what year this engine is as the cut-off point is the 10/79.
I need to order Carbie rebuild kits for it & of coarse there are 2 different kits available..🙁

What are the EA71 engines like?
Can you get performance parts for them?
Any ideas on who is the local (Brisbane) Subaru Guy/Girl?

I would like to use the standard engine till at least it is rego'ed again as that will save any hassles...

CYA tonigh @ Harry's

sinecure ·

The EA71 is a 1600cc used primarily in Aus in the Leone's. The 2 different carbed versions were used 75-78 and 78-84. The twin carb version is very rare, and is definitely open to performance mods. I can't find any info on kits for the twin carbs, but I've put the call out.

These guys have been a great help to me, sign up and ask your questions:

http://www.subaruclub.com.au/cms/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewforum&f=10

This page has a lot of info about basic checklists with regards to modding the EA series:

SirDelton ·

Thanks for the infromation "sinecure" I have now started working on the car. The Carby's have been stripped down & as soon as Repco is open today I will take them down there to get the rebuild kits.

I'm glad I found this group because I'm now keen to get this car up & running.

Cheers

Yeah but almost nothing with a 114 PCD has an offset that suits a VW... May be able to use E-series falcon wheels on a kit car - no guards to scrub

sinecure ·

I figured the offset would be 'negotiable' as it's a kit car. I know a dealer near me who is happy to test fit wheels when I change to this stud pattern, as I have a LOT of room to play on my MKII, and he has lots of wheels available in this pattern with various offsets (-40 to +40) and widths.

SirDelton ·

I've been looking at Mags all day for the car.
I found a real sweet looking set but somehow I can't see a 20 inch Mag fitting.. But I will be measuring to see if a (Get this for a size..) 666 mm Dia rims & tyres (225 - 35 - 20)

One other option is to have Billet Mags made. Keith 4 Wheels put me onto this option & the cost wasn't as high as you would think.. (If the quoted ball park figure he gave me was correct.) On the up side of doing it this way i get to keep the VW stud pattern, saving on buying new front brakes & paying the extra $100 for the COR's IRS rear brakes.

I was told these billet Mags can be looked at online but the website he wrote on the back of a Bizcard is wrong..

This is what he wrote down for me to look at..

Does this ring any bells to somebody?

As someone else brought it up, I build those Knight Rider kits (16 HI red LEDS) for bikes and cars. Should see traffic move out of the way of my mates Katana when he comes up behind cars and switches them on. 😂

SirDelton ·

Thanks to Mick I now have the Magazine article of the Paragon SP1 :bounce

If this car is a rare as I have been lead to believe it is I want to know at what point does a car like this lose value?
I have been told it is the only one.. But it doesn't have the VW motor or the wheels that are on the car in the Magazine article so I think there is likely to be at least one more.

What do you feel should remain STD & what do you think is acceptable to change.

I have planned to change the following.

-Brakes
-Wheels
-Interior
-Minor internal body mods (Side Pods don't currently duct air to carbies.)
-Motor
-New paint (Of coarse)

I was going to add a wing & do other body shell mods but in light of the information you guys have found I will not touch it at all.

🙁 But I think it would still look good with a Lambo Wing on it..

sinecure ·

This is what I reckon it resembles. 1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo:

sinecure ·

Try to contact the builders by the address of the company in the article, if that's no good, try the phone book for their names. They should know how many bodies were completed.

As far as modding it goes, I reckon slam it, drill it, re-mould it, shave it, smooth it, cut stuff off it, bolt stuff onto it and colour it if you want. It s a kit car after all, it's meant to be yours and as individual as you choose to make it. Don't think about valuing it, think about driving it just the way you want it, and loving it!:thumb

IMHO, I think a wing similar to the new model Esprit would look cool.

Nick, good to hear from you! Hows the travelling treating you? Well, I hope.

Got my new tailights today (4 125mm round chrome rims, clear lenses - thanks Marcus DUBB61). Making multi HI LED light clusters at work tonight to fit the festoon holders.

SirDelton ·

👍
Yes it has to have a wing...
I like the side skirts on the modern Esprit also..

Got new master cylinder & fluid bottle today from Volks Conversions & had a long chat with John about Kit cars in general. Great guy with alot of information...
Got stuffed around by this rude jerk @ Ipswich Carburettors when trying to find the idle jet... Still looking...

Did find a set of Mags I like... Just got to measure the offset...
The car will be running 20 inch Mags with 25 series rubber...After finding out these will have the exact same dia as the current wheels, not even the dark lord :vader can stop me getting a set of them now..

sinecure ·

25 series rubber! I hope your spine is in good nick, cause you're going to be feeling every grain of sand on the road !!! 🤪

It's going to look like a WEAPON! I'm working nights for the 4th week in a row, and still 2 more to go 😠, but I really want to see this car! Have you got it at your place now?

I think the full body kit from the S350 above would look supreme, but would probably cost a few $$$, even copied!

No it's still @ Jimboomba.
Got a wedding to go to tomorrow so no work on the car this weekend.

I'm hoping to get the brakes working & the engine running better next weekend so I can start thinking about getting it home..

Hey Sir Delton, gull's selling a good one of these engines. Read this...
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=53917

SirDelton ·

Project Update...

I finally found a replacement Idle jet for the Carb's.. I had to drill a couple of extra holes into it but so far all looks good.

Engine has stopped popping so the valves have settle back in. After balancing the Carbs & adjusting the fuel mix the engine is happy to idle at 700 RPM but I have set it to 800 to be safe.

Started work on the brakes but while trying to fit the new Mastee cylinder I snapped the main brake line for the rear end... So now I'm going to have to take it to a professional.. :cry

I have picked up a wing similar to the one in the photo above so I'm going to go back out tomorrow & see if it looks OK or not..

Get this for a price differance...
One Mag wheel shop in Brownsplains quoted me $3800 more for the same Mags I have been quoted on down at the gold Coast.. Now how RUDE is that?

pete wood ·

sounds like the second quote for those mags came with a free check on headlight fluid, rotating of the your muffler bearings and a bore out on ya spark plugs. And we all know those services are invaluable...🤓

SirDelton ·

pete wood wrote:sounds like the second quote for those mags came with a free check on headlight fluid, rotating of the your muffler bearings and a bore out on ya spark plugs. And we all know those services are invaluable...🤓
I have to admit I was worried after he told me the price.
I was thinking the place down the Gold Coast had quote for a Pair & not a Set.. But a 3rd places at Moss St quoted $400 more then the Gold Coast so I'm guessing the Brownsplains Shop guy had just come back from lunch..:beer or had been using the Herbal Sigs..

SirDelton ·

The Wing has been installed.
Took it for a drive up the block today.. No Foot brakes ONLY a hand brake.. Lucky it is in the bush & there are no cars driving around..

I don't think this engine is going to make the cut.. Seems a bit under powered. But it maybe just in need of a good tune up.. I'll wait till the brakes are installed & take it for a bit of a drive somewhere..

SirDelton ·

Opps Photo's didn't post...
Take two..

[ Edited on 15-7-2006 by SirDelton ]

sinecure ·

Wing looks wicked, but if you could flatten it out a bit, I think it would suit the bodyline better.

I can't wait to see this thing in person. Must get off these graveyard shifts!:duh

Just think what taking 2 inches out of the ride height and the BIG wheels will do to the stance! I think that maybe the chrome trims may have to go then, as they may detract from the BIG wheel/ULTRA low profile tyre look! Only my opinion though!

Loving it!

Cheers,

Mick.

SirDelton ·

I have managed to track down one of the designers of the Paragon & he has confirmed my car is in fact the Only Car they ever made.
There was a big fall out with the Company that was going to make this car.

The moulds where sold & destroyed :cussing

So I truely do have a 1 of a kind car.. :thumb

Guys, this car is stunning. After seeing it (only in the garage) and having a chat, I think this will be one of the most head-turning kit cars around when he's through.

And Darren, go the 2 seater option (stuff in a couple of 15 inch subs and an insane amp to cover up the rear seats - and blow out the rear window!).

Talk to you soon.

What are the Spec's of this engine?
The only RS I can find is a 2.5lt is this correct?

What gearbox will I require to run this beasty?

What did Subaru change on the STi model engines to double there torque figures & Hp?

I know I'm a Subaru Nooby.. :alien It's all still Alien to me..

I'm guessing finding a STi engine is impossible?

pete wood ·

that wing is a little bit too much for me personally. if you keep it, it needs to be much closer to the boot.

liberty rs turbo is a 2l turbo. you'll want an Lbug box for that. the impresa RS is the 2.5l na motor.

SirDelton ·

pete wood wrote:that wing is a little bit too much for me personally. if you keep it, it needs to be much closer to the boot.

I think I agree on the wing..
But lowering it may not be an option as all new adjustable mounts would have to be made.

The Wife likes it & I'm 50/50 on it.
I guess I'll just wait till the car is closer to Rego to make the final call.

I think it needs a wing but which one I don't know..

I also got the feeling from the origanal designer that the hatch back idea was a cheap fix & not the design he wanted to use, so the final car design may be different once I see his concept drawings.

Thanks for the feed back.. Good or Bad it all helps guide me as to what I should be doing..

I will be starting work on it again in Sept after I return from my Holidays... If I don't break a leg Skiing.. 😂

Cheers..

But I don't know if there is anywhere to mount the large hinges required to raise the doors.

I like to see it with a Lambo Delta V wing on it also. But they are extremely hard to find as all hotrod shops only cater for the Japan Imports.

Ok Car update..

After looking at a V6 twin turbo mitsubishi 6a12gtt on the weekend & finding out it was just too big to fit.. :cry

I have placed an order with Seagull for a Subura EJ20TT to go with the adapter I have also obtained from him.. Thanks Neil...

Which I guess is going to turn out better in the long run.. Even if it has now worked out a lot more expensive then the V6 package that was on offer....

Up side is EJ20TT has almost 30 Kw more power then the V6 & has @ 50Kg's less weight...

New brake lines have been ordered from Classic VW. But I'm still looking into which Disc brake kit I'm going to put onto the car.. At this stage I may even follow Neils (Seagull) lead & use RX7 front brakes & EA Falcon rears..

I'm guessing the engine will get to me in a week so I will be looking to sell the EA71 & Adapter that is currently in the car.

Hi everybody... I'm back online...

I've finally got most things sorted after my move from Brisbane to Gladstone.

The Car is still as it was but now I have been told the laws for kitcars is changing again... 😬

So...

I believe with very little money I could get this ready for Rego with all of the original parts it had when it was last rego'ed. Should I be thinking of doing this?

My plan was to finish the project before trying to get it through rego, but this is going to take lots & lots of dollars which I currently don't have. But if I was to get it to a state where it could be driven & after it's regoed start modifying it to the state I'm looking for.

So please help me out with the Pro's & Con's of getting it through rego or just modify it & get it past at the end...

My fears are I'm going to spend money on this project only to have it turn into a car that can never be driven on the road.

Not sure this will help at all but SA has the most lenient registration in the country.

I have bought two cars from interstate, simply driven them to the local cop shop and the officer has said

Amazing the ease in some states and the carry on in others!
