DEATH FOAM!!!

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/53521/death-foam

bajachris88 ·

That death foam stuff that makes bugs rust like a can at sea, is it the stuff that runs in the hollow part that goes up above the rear quarter window (runs along there)?

cause i see foam, and dunno whether its it. If it is, how should i remove it ? its a baja, will it be ok to have it open to the weather with the foam out?

barls ·

coat hanger is the standard method but oxy works just as well just have to make sure the car doesnt go up in flames

bajachris88 ·

burn it? does it light up?

will have fuel line away, hehe. as long as it doesn't burn the paint off, cause i won't be able to reach easily 🙁 vacuum maybe....

barls ·

i suggest the coat hanger through the holes in the top of the engine bay mate because it will burn the paint

pod ·

hook the foam out with an old coathanger, just make the hook part smaller.Maybe some of that hard setting fibreglass bog might be good to seal the ends of the channels up??🙂 just leave a drain hole through the bottom

cheers barls. will go for it tomorrow. Holy dam, this car keeps me soo busy, i luv it! Don't think about anything in the world but it when i'm working on it. Greatest outlet.

barls ·

not a problem chris
sorry pod just beat you

bond ·

"Don't think about anything in the world but it when i'm working on it"

i wont even begin with the congnitive functioning, neuro processing, states of awareness, directed attention and various forms of memory involved in that one lol

That foam crap is hard stuff I used a bit of 5/16" or 8 mm rod with a hook on the end to scrap n chisel it out it takes a few hours curve the rod as well to get it in n around all the bends in the panel

vw54 ·

some of the foam i scrapped out

vw54 ·

more

vw54 ·

n more

vw54 ·

cutting the rust away also helps access

vw54 ·

as the foam tends to stick to the inners panels

koolkarmakombi ·

acetone works to clean the residue off

Advise like this on this site is typical from barls, totally irresponsable
DO NOT USE HEAT OR FLAME ON THAT FOAM !!!
Its very toxic, it might have already affected some in this group with the pointers that they give !!

Barls ask your old man , he will confirm that shits real nasty.

barls ·

yes i know its nasty so get back in your box i only know that the oxy works well because i was repairing the panel where the foam was. and as for my advice its generally good, give one more example where its been dodgy and i havent been taking the piss. if you cant pull your head in and get lost

jakjones ·

I think the fumes may have got to u,,,\if u know its nasty then why tell people to burn it 😬😬😬😬

my old man , my old man , my old man ,,😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

barls ·

see i knew you had nothing now get stuffed and have a nice day

Volkswagenboy ·

Obviously if you were to use an oxy for ANY purpose you'd be in a well ventilated area, using to correct PPE.
The oxy may work, but I'd rather only go to that extend when restoring or at least repainting the body (As you said Barls, it will burn the paint).
Keep an extinguisher handy and there shouldn't be too much risk.
And Jakjones... no offence but read the post a bit more thoroughly:
Quote from Barls:

He gave the apropriate advise to Chris either way.
Thank you.
-Staggers.

barls ·

at least someone here can read thanks staggers, i think hes got something special for me and ripping my advice to pieces because he has nothing better to do with his time, hell both of us almost got banned last time he pulled this shit you would think he would learn as i have.

Volkswagenboy ·

Obviously not, either way if it keeps going on like this in Chris's thread it may be reported...

Going back to the original topic, before someone decided to be rude... My idea for beating the foam war is by using a sandblaster. I've never tried it but I would think it'd work well to an extent.

-Staggers.

bond ·

sandblasting - a good idea but i dont think its a quick budget solution that chris might be after...

i think what KKK said would be more appropriate - acetone - easier applied (though still difficult) but not as difficult as say a grinder or something....

nick

ps. i would even be tempted to leave it - in most cars that section will rust up anyhow from the foam being there for the last 30yrs - like it will happen eventually - why not then when it does happen - cut the section out, clean it up - save a lot of trouble and just weld a new peice in....... just my 2c chris

bajachris88 ·

smart idea. It hasn't rusted yet.

Well, i dunno really what to do. Lol
coat hanger would be easiest. Haven't heard any complaints about taking it out. even if its a shotty job.
but honestly... lol, i have no idea. I got bigger fish to fry than foam, hehe

t2 ·

what year beetles have this foam in them and where exactly is it ? i am just starting to restore a 71 super and if it has it in there some place i would like to try to get it out if its not to good to leave it in there

bond ·

agree chris - once the car is on the road and rwc and driveable then worry about the nitty gritty - one thing at a time my friend - us males dont multitask well... hehe

nick

barls ·

its usually in the rear turret just next to the bottom of the rear window hence why its a spot to check for rust

bajachris88 ·

hey nick, might have a nice line up for a cute little 76 :P

Yes.... all You Beetle owners with the flow thru ventilation vents....
This foam does kill Beetles....

I've seen a few late beetles with the vents closed over...
but You have to be lucky to be rust free....
whatever you do... Now...

The Killer Foam --
because its had years to do its dirty work....

RUST.....

Lee

Joel ·

like lee said its on all 71 on beetles

it seems luck of the draw though i see a hellof a lot of bugs rusted out there but some just seem to escape unnoticed
my 2 74 beetles have never had a spec of rust there even though my 1300 had already had 1 floorpan replaced from rust and the replacement one was stuffed aswell

i think they let the apprentice put the foam in it at beer oclock time on a friday arvo.
it had completley filled the pillar area and expanded down into the engine bay buldging the tarboard out about 3":o

PHARK!
-Staggers.

dangerous ·

My old bug ('60) had a sewn up triangular pillow in there from the factory.

bajachris88 ·

my 69 did too. i still got it! took it out though, along with the sound proofing. Really grotty

pod ·

61 had the pillow and the 69 had some sort of grey and coloured insulation material, all in the bin🤪

vw54 ·

I tried a few other things as well to disolve the foam crap

Acetone, Paint thinners, Petrol, Kero, turps and the like didnt have any effect on the crap.

Carby Cleaner will disolve it but i thought if sprayed into the cavity it would disolve the stuff and only let it drip down into the lower sill area and create a bigger problem

I think manual labour is the best

bajachris88 ·

could u blow it out with a air compressor?

koolkarmakombi ·

Jak, whomever you are, have obviously got that foam between your ears. :alien chill out with the bitchiness.

I have used an oxy to get it out without damaging the outside paint. The trick is the type of flame and you need to get a hole through it first. Anyone using an oxy should be aware of the safety features of ventilation, goggles, gloves etc.

The oxy causes bad fumes off of paint too so the foam is no biggy. Arc/Mig welding the rust will set it alight too if not carefull.

The other non flame heat like a heat gun could work. After heating, the residue is no longer hydroscopic so future rust there shouldnt be an issue.
