Can you drill and tap all oil gallery plugs on a type1 engine as i am currently rebuilding an engine, I have drilled and tapped all oil galleries on four Type 4 cases before, but on the type 4 there is one behind the flywheel that is a little tricky is this the same on a type 1 or should i just D&T the whole lot. Cheers Damo.

So far as I know, You only drill two on the type 1 engine
Oil In & out...
I think I have a photo somewhere...
I hope its a type 1 engine...
with twin relief valves...
I've never seen it done like that before, there is already a hole tapped where the blanking hex fitting is in the pic, on the engine case that i have. I'm sure i have seen type 1 cases where all gallery plugs have been drilled and tapped.

thats different,,,i rekon i would follow the standard practice and do the all the oil gallaries and pump as normal:beer:beer:beer

As I understand it, the oil gallery plugs are removed and the holes drilled and tapped for screwed plugs for two main reasons:
1) The plugs are prone to leakage, whereas screwed plugs seal better.
2) Screwed plugs can be easily removed to allow thorough cleaning of oil galleries at rebuild time.
If you are pulling out the plugs to clean the galleries, you might as well drill and tap and fit screwed plugs.
But you probably already knew this.
There is no reason why you cann't do this to a type 1 case, just like you've done to a type 4. I have seen several books where they suggest this be done.

Looks like that above pic is setup for full flow oil filter.

I'm doing it as we speak you need to drill a 37/64 hole (or 9/16 will do) externally in what would be the pressure gallery and then tap it out to 3/8 npt. You then tap the outlet of the pump hosing to 1/4npt and plug it. don't plug the case instead of the pump. Then get a pump cover with an external port.

Ok thanks people i will D&T all of them, good thing i already have the drills and taps, they are quite pricey i spent all up about $150.00 on these tools but i got them forever now. Also i will be using steel NPT threaded plugs, a) cause their cheaper and easier to remove $8.00 for 15 b) Aluminium ones that i bought from a go fast shop cost over $20 dollars for 12 of them, and they can seize in and require drilling them out. Will post a pic once job is done, cheers for your help, Damo.

dont get too heavy on the allen key screwing in the plugs ,i have seen more than a few cases split because of the taper:beer
