SCAT lifters - good or bad??

What experience does anyone have on SCAT lifters good or bad.... this is not to start up a slagging session, it is to be based on experience.

I am personally looking at using some in a 2276, large cam (berg 319A) with 1.1:1 rockers, Steve Timms 44x37 heads, Lightened flywheel, 40mm Dellortos, 1-5/8" exhaust, Electronic ignition in Bosch 009, Scat pro comp crank, stock length rods.... and I want to be sure of some life out of the weekend driver with the occasional long drive.

personally id stay away from them i havent heard a good thing about them. you should try the same question on shoptalk and see what answer you get there

toplessbug ·

what barls said ,stf has a lot of derogatory comments about scat valve gear and most directed to lifters ," loose" a lobe in particular:beer:beer:beer

hellbugged ·

still a 319 with 1.1:1 rockers...........🙅

if your getting a berg cam, then use their followers with the extra groove between the rings.SCAT , there is no need for wide base lifters etc on properly designed cams, hanen't heard anything to good about them yet.

you coming to Valla? ,i have someone who wants to sit you down and have a proper chat about cams.

read this......

take note of the regularity of the rebuilds and extreme lengths you have to go to, to cure oil starvation at such high revs

your choice, but the 319 is a DESIGNED all out race cam, for RACING, if you like putting your foot down out of a corner and the engine going blurp, blahp, blahp, putter putter UNTIL you reach 4500rpm, you'll luv it. they run from 4500rpm up, but barely at all under that, not streetable!

to run in the range suited to that cam, you will need venturis bigger than what you could ever hope to fit into 40mm dellotos......

long traveling with a cam that literally hates being under 4500 rpm....that would be interesting.......

I have used Scat cams and lifters in the past with no problems.
But that being said, I would personally avoid them at this time with all the bad publicity that is
about....unless you can find some old stock.
In the past you could rely on them to be a very hard and light weight lifter that was the "sure thing" when it came time to pick the lifters for your engine.
I have used all brands of lifters and cams and provided they were run-in correctly, and didn't have too much nose pressure, they were fine.
The groove that berg cuts between the rings on his lifters can be done at home, but is only
there to supply a continuous stream of oil up to the rockers.
The groove is of assistance if you run a bushed rocker & a small base circle cam profile...or any
profile for that matter, that puts the lifter in a position that stops the flow of oil.
Most of the Scat lifters had a head diameter that was only about 1mm bigger than STD, but if
the cam lobe has fast ramps, large base circle, or lots of lobe lift, a larger head diameter may
stop edge riding of the lifter.
I normally check the pattern of contact and then reduce the diameter of the head to what is
needed. This can actually vary depending on which hole and lobe the parts are in.
As for the engine combo above, it will run, but the carbs(and especially the manifolds) will
restrict that engine, but that cam may be better when you upgrade the rockers and intake.
I would personally choose a cam that is designed for stock rockers, eg W120 or W125 or
equivalent in your favourite brand. I like the C95 but it is a little noisy.
My favourite is V26 Engle (not VZ25!!!) with 1.4 or larger rockers..it is an uncommon profile,
but Berg sells them.Very smooth profile and can make good power with the right heads(which you have).

so chalk up another vote for a re-cam to the berg 309/Engle V26......

310 would be nice too.....but stick to a 300 without ratio rockers

to run the 319 with dells, you'd be looking at 42mm and up venturis

Thanks for all the comments guys.... seems like I am back to the engine builder..... or the bank manager 😂

oh yeah, get the followers machined under the head for clearance over the case lifter bores. you will need this with high lift and should save you having to cut the bores down
