After a long time with no chokes, I've just put them back on and my 1800 kombi engine revs pretty fast when first started. It eventually evens out at a more relaxed pace but i know this is not normal.
Any ideas? (something to do with throttle cams or something?).
Also, my idle speed has become slightly higher. I've tried to slow it by screwing in the BIG idle screw on the Left hand carb, but this bottoms out and doesn;t slow it enough - what do i need to tinker with?
Thanks, Sam

search thru here ,1303 steve (,steve carter)did a really good write up on kombi carb adjustments not very long ago ,if you cant find it go to richard atwells site http://www.ratwell.com/ :beer:beer:beer

you dont really need chokes on solex carbies for most of OZ, they really are a pain in the ass to adjust, usually the heated element on the electric front thingo is stuffed and they cost an arm and a leg to buy, the best thing is to disconnect them a couple of pumps on the accelerator pedal then start with no accelerator until idle comes up, if you can not get idle adjustment then it is either the throttle stop screws on each carbie and or the mixture screws located on the side of each carbie down near the butterfly the www.ratwell.com article on carby adjustment is good if you want to remain stock.

Yeah, whilst the chokes were diconnected I was letting it warm up and then driving off (but in cooler weather it was a pig for the first 5 mins - very jumpy).
Now the cold nights are here in Perth it runs a lot better from cold on the chokes, except for this fast idling problem. Strangely, it happens when re-started from warm as well... takes about a minute to settle down.
I dont want to go through the whole carb set-up thing on ratwell cos i dont have the thingy you need to balance them properly and have never got my head round the mixture adjustment screws (tsch!).

Ok, your duel carby setup has two automatic (electric) chokes. Your adjust how long you want them to be on for by twisting them. Off these chokes runs a fast idle lever. So when your chokes are in action, the throttle position changes. You can adjust this change from 0 to about 1/2 throttle. I cant quite remember but on the inner side between both carbs there is a little lever coming up from the throttle which has two nuts either side of an attachment. Thats what you want to adjust, but dont quote me on it, might be the right thing.... some1 else can clarify!

This all sounds normal to me.
"Revs pretty fast when first started. It eventually evens out at a more relaxed pace" ...... normal set up.
"runs a lot better from cold on the chokes, except for this fast idling problem"....... fast idle? Are you talking after the chokes come off or before??. If before this is normal
"it happens when re-started from warm as well... takes about a minute to settle down".... once again normal. Even in 30 degree heat the bi metalic stip will colse. Closed is its NORMAL position. It drives open when it warms up.
The only thing i can think is maybe you have the bi metalic/spring wound on too far

I had a fiddle with this yesterday
Bizarre - yup, i see your point. The chokes are operating correctly, but its just that the idle speed is TOO high initially, like its racing away at 2000rpm for 2 mins. This is not normal, as it never used to do this before i took the chokes off.
After inspecting it I'm thinking that this is more wrapped up in problems with my (non-choked) idle speed, so i'll sort that out and then adjust the (choked) throttle position as per the other guy.
Thanks for the help 😉

i run all our vws with the chokes backed right off from the factory setting
they dont need to be set so aggressively as the car will idle to high and usually will start to roll abit as it runs rich till they warm up
the other down side is like u said it engages for min or so when u start back up hot as the chokes just cool down alot quicker than the motor
maybe try backing them both off even amounts and see if theres any improvement??
i dont even run with the chokes on my 32pdsits as it starts fine even in 4 degrees just give 2 mins to warm up

Yeah, I ran the chokes from Perth round to Brisbane, then ripped them off when we rebuilt the engine as it was stinking hot and didn't need 'em. QLD, NT, The Kimberley fine, but as soon as you cross the tropic of Capricorn and head Perth-wards again its stuttering again for the first 5 minutes and that means grief from the missus so on they go!
I think the problem is self-perpetuating because when it increases the revs, that causes the vac advance to kick in at idle (which then increases the revs). Just need to adjust correctly
