upgrading 1300 to 1641

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/53739/upgrading-1300-to-1641

blutopless2 ·

am thinking of upgrading our engine from a 1300 to a 1641 with a piston/barrel set and recoed twin port heads.
Is this a simple bolt on thing or should it be done by a mechanic?? (and mscabrio can just shuddup right about here :P)

also i want to change to the carbs that sit on the sides rather than on the front of the motor... so how do i know what would be the best set up for the carbs??
Do i run two single barrell carbs, two twin barrell carbs??
would the twin barrells just be too much for a 1641??
Any info would be appreciated or a push in the right direction....
Thanks.

I have seen twin carburetors on single port 1600 engines
so it should be OK for a 1641 twin port engine..

I'm not sure about the best twin carburetors....
I've been told twin Kadrons are too big for a 1641 engine.
so, its webers of some sort or twin Solexes...

cheers

You've been told wrong
Kadrons are PERFECT for a 1600-ish engine

phil ·

i run 1641 p&c and kadrons with cheapy extractor exhaust on an otherwise stock engine and have been very happy with the difference it makes.......except for a running problem just recentlly ie popping back through carbies when cold...very annoying...but i will figure it out eventually and all will be well

blutopless2 ·

sorry but what is p&c?
you run two double barrel carbs?

Bizarre ·

Pistons and Cylinders

Kadrons are twin single barrels

If you can get hold of a set of IDF 36's they are brilliant.
Its a bit Ford/Holden with the Weber/Kadron thing.

Never had Kads but i loved my IDFs on a 1600

your 1300 is a twin port already isnt it??

Do it yourself - well there is no machining, so i guess its a bolt on/off affair.

phil ·

from what i understand its a price thing with carby kits...when i bought my kads (prob. 10 years ago now) they were half the price of anything else and although i would like the webbers.......history now and i can't complain, the kad kit has been reliable and easy to maintain and fuel consumption didn't really change
if the 1300is the same size barrel like bizare says its really a bolt on thing....but don't forget to factor in distributor, replace other old parts,do the clutch while your there...etc

Special Air Service ·

I have been told that the valve sizes in 1300 Twin Port heads are smaller than those in 1600 heads, someone may correct me if Im wrong.

Cheers
Brendan

Bizarre ·

That is true - but i dont believe that is necessarily a bad thing.

The 2L square port T4has smaller valves than the 1800

Has all to do with port velocity and stuff i dont understand 😂

Speaking of 36 IDF's....ask EMPI....he has (or had) a pair he wanted to offload....

If you use your 1300 twin port heads you will need to machine the heads so the barrels will fit, the 1300 barrels have a smaller top than the 1600s.

I would use new "040"heads, and split the case and do the bearings while you are there, but depends on how much you want to spend.

Bizarre ·

Dave - what about using the smaller valved heads??

I heard they were good on the 1300 - what you reckon on the 1600??

VWCOOL ·

I had a Pobjoy 1640 years ago with 043 (I think) small valve heads and it went HARD

valve size is not as critical as other aspects ofthe engine below 2 litres and 100hp or so

.

IT NEEDS TO BE DONE BY A MECHANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't appreciate the nice big oil stain that is now on my driveway thanks to your tinkering !!!!! The neighbours hate us and our VW collection enough now without making the street look messy with an oil saturated driveway!!!!!!!!!!

Bizarre ·

I have advice for ya Blutopless2 - but i dont think someone is gunna agree 🙅

Come on man - its time you started building engines on the kitchen table.

Why do you think God invented the dishwasher!!!

Hose the rest of the driveway down with oil and it will all look one colour!

Come on Mscabrio - get over it!

yes it is.

part of the deal is with recoed heads to suit 1640.

blutopless2 ·

what do i need to consider with the distributor?

Bizarre ·

if you can get a vacuum signal or not.

If you can (Kads with a lot of work) - you can use a stock dizzy

IDFs you cant get a signal so you need a 009

blutopless2 ·

thanks,
will leave the techo stuff to the mechanic. 👍

for crap's sake Rod, buy a torque wrench! They're not that exy...

blutopless2 ·

hahaha... buy one???? you're fricken jokin aren't ya??? why buy when we have them at work 😂.... i dont mind bolting the motor together... just the shit with the carbs and what extra bits etc i need i will leave up to the mechanic... then i know it'll work... :thumb

i gotta pull all the tinware off so i can get it all powdercoated etc... then gotta work out what to do with the firewall etc...
will also do the clutch while the engine is out, thrust bearing etc.. did all this on the oval so no biggy there.

i had 1641cc with kads. went pretty good for a small capacity engine.

also had extractors, and a 009 with pertronix.
