VWFOOL ·

u have split the rubber axle boots

wacked1 ·

thanks mate

wacked1 ·

are they hard to change??

VWFOOL ·

i wuldnt know, i sent mine straight to the mechanic coz i thought id finally killed the tranny, oil was everywhere.
boots cost $18.
labour was $45.
lecture for slamming the shit out of my bug... PRICELESS.

Chewy ·

No theyre not hard to fit but it is fiddly. They are split so they wrap around the tube and the seam bolts together. Use some sillicon gasket sealer on the seam.

best way to do the boots.

ive done two sets now and i have another lot to do now.

you think u have issues with lowering, when u jack it up the boots rub on the frame horns something chronic.

if you jack up the car then the axle will droop back against the frame horn making it impossible to get them off.

so you can either jack up the axle with the car (dodgy at the best of times)

or use ramps.

if you dont have access to ramps then park your car with the arse end over a gutter or some sort of drop off.

try to get german boots.

Someone told me a while ago, to stop this you wedge a bolt in between the springplate and the lower stop, before you jack the car. Apparently he had done it a number of times and it works well.

Have not tried it myself yet as I was told after I did my first set of boots with the axle tubes down against the frame horns. Will be doing a set soon when I am allowed to get greasy next, might try the bolt trick. Will be lowering the rear first, just so there's more clearance between the tube & frame, not for any other reason :thumb
