:jesus Problems with our '74 Kombi gear change - had problems getting 1st and 2nd - read on this site about adjusting the stop plate - tried that and no luck - went to VW mech who welded up a bush at the gear box end and said that this would solve the sloppy gear changes - he also found we had a plastic bush missing at the gearstick linkage into the main shaft which he also replaced. Problem... not even 50kms down road the bush is split in 2 halves through the groove and a chunk taken out of it - so once again no 1st or 2nd - any ideas as the vw mech seems baffled..................

more info... dont understand the "welded up a bush at the rear"???
There is a coupling there. That is a clamp that is replaced
WHere abouts are you??
Did it work fine for the 50kms???
Sounds like the bushing wasnt installed properly

The gearlever shaft bush in a beetle is a small nylon sort of thing....
I wondere whether the welding stopped movement which in turn wrecked the small bush which usually lasts about 20-39+ years or more....

Hi Bizarre, the coupling was not replaced but where the inner shift leaver joins into the coupling by a push fit nylon fitting into the back of the coupling housing - this bit of nylon is connected to the inner shift leaver with a metal collar with what looks to have a grub screw holding it on to the inner shift leaver. This metal collar has bee tack welded each side to the coupling housing - so maybe what Lee is sayong makes alot of sense - it restricts the movement by making it too stiff. It did work ,like new for the first 50 or so kms but then failed totally and when I checked underneath - the new bush at the fron of the shatf (below the gear lever) had split in 2 halves around the middle, with a bit each side of the mounting bracket - does this make sense??!! We're living & working in Hobart and lovin it!!!
