this is a pic of a tie-rod in my type3 i need to replace. ive ordered and tried to fit ones the Auto shop gave me aparently suited for 65 models. the taiper was to big on them. this is a pic of the original. it comes off the stearing box to the left. has my front end been moded? or is the auto place retarded or do i need earlier ones.

thanks for any help

Two sizes on Beetle (small link pin and larger BJ - with a one year 'overlap' in '68) - may be the same for Type 3

1500S ·

Early Type 3s have a smaller taper. They must have sold you the later disk brake front end one. If yours is a 65 it will take the smaller ones.

What year is the car you need the tie rod end for

type3hunter ·

its a 65

type3hunter ·

the actual tie rod i need to replace off the steering box in the pic has a round rubber section (for a stering damper?) before its thred. i do not know if its original but its in there.

DallanMulley ·

The pic is of the steering column coupling.

Type 3 steering dampers attach to a rubber bushed hole in the pitman arm. Have a look if there is also this bush in your car.

this is a new pic (up the right way) with notes on it. looks best if saved to desktop then viewed from there.
Anyway, the rubber rubber doughnut bit is part of the actual tie rod and sits between the tie-rod and the tie-rods threded end. the steering damper is there and mounted to the pitman arm a little lower than the top of the tie-rod end with a 'U' shackle thing.
Can you tell im new to VW yet?

DallanMulley ·

It is all part of your tie rod.The rubber is a cover over the ball part of rod and wire just holds it on.Some ends has grease nipples but later none.Good idea to put a clamp on your fuel pipe.

The tie rod end you need is available new from Vintage in Campsie give them a ring 02-9789-1777 they have in stock

DallanMulley ·

Buy a ball joint spliter not expensive.

type3hunter ·

or hold a hammer to one side of the tie-rod and hit the oposite side with another hammer. works great for me.

type3lover ·

I used a ball joint splitter today for the 1st time on type 3 tie rod ends.
Worked a treat and didn't even damage the rubber boot!
