Day of the VW in Melbourne?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/54144/day-of-the-vw-in-melbourne

Menangler ·

Day of the Volkswagen, Yarra Glenn in November???
Just want to check the dates for this, if it is on again this year, does anyone know?

VWMA Editor ·

Sunday November 26th.

Cranbourne Racecourse, South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

Details in the next issue of VWMA due out August 5th.

empi ·

Why cant they do it closer to melbourne?? the 356 concourse is on the same day in Toorak... most of the guys in the 356 seen have vws and most of us vee dub nuts like 356s so why dont we have it near each other ... makes sence . If it was closer to town and advertised properly more people would come and it could promote the enthuisam of the vee dub seen here .

my 2c.

Menangler ·

Thanks Craig,
Think I will fly down this year, just wanted to book tickets for the right weekend.

I agree Empi, the 1st Day of the VW I went to years ago, was in a park, VW's one end, 356's the other, it was great

cool wanted 2 know my self as i need 2 book a head :thumb

PrettyBlueBug ·

Cranbourne this time? Wow. :P

65busser ·

That's a valid question Adam, and one that comes up every year. Could never understand why the Club and the Register couldn't get it together. Would benefit so many, and inconvenience so few I'd have thought.
Any VW Club Vic people here can throw some light on it?

empi ·

The guys at the register have asked my why as well , they are willing to accomodate us in toorak as well.

maybe a poll...

65busser ·

Yeah Flemington's excellent. Como Park with or near the 356's would be ideal. Yeah let's poll it. Go Adam!!

Would we all fit?

empi ·

aparrantly so , there are 4 or so parks the have access to.. why not try it once if it dont work dont do it again.

blutopless2 ·

am a club member - but not on the committee that organises the events so cant tell you exactly why cranbourne was chosen.
had heard that the reason for moving from yarra glen is that it is no longer suitable in size and the pricing etc was going up, so they looked for an alternative...
i dont mind where they have it - i would still attend.

baybuscamperkid ·

i think thats probably the biggest issue, price, by the time grounds are hired for so many people, insurances or whatever are payed, not to mention, i cant vouch for tghe new venue as i havent been there, but the abilities of the old venue to have such a huge undercover trades area, as well as the built in caffeteria and undercover swapmeet sites, are surely things that have been looked at by the club in many other venues, and Cranbourne was found as the most suitable for what has been a very successful and enjoyable show for many years. if its such a big issue, why dont the 356s come to cranbourne? I am sure there are less of them so they would be easier to accomodate 🙂

65busser ·

I think a central location is part of the appeal, but you're right bbck, the club has certainly done it right in the past and there's no reason to believe they won't get it right this time.
It seems a bit of a shame though that the two can't compliment each other. Although the majority of the 356 crew might have trouble with that concept, there are quite a few who are members of both and usually have to decide which event they'll attend.
Even if the two events were on different days...but they're always on the same day and a long way from each other. Not a biggie, but worth a thought.

jnr356 ·

i have involvement in both vw's & 356's
i have spoken to presidents of both clubs on numerous occasions to no avail
both clubs seem to have different presidents each year
and never have any rapport
you are takjng away at least 100 people for each event
madness!!

BenettonVW ·

Every year. Every damn year.

Flemington sounds good in theory, but it is the Spring Carnival that time of year isn't it? If Melbourne Cup is first week of Nov. and this is the last week, then I am just thinking that there will still be races on a fair bit.

It could be fund raising by VWCV to refuse to share? Not like they are poor.. just tight. Purely guesswork.

empi ·

Partition...??? The guys in the 356 seen ask me all the time and are happy to accomodate , lets do it , more central is probally better would enthuse more people and is more accessible via PT (more enthiuasm).

We will make this happen ... if it dont work well dont do it again but we have to try.

CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·

cranbourne is the ass earth of nowhere why so far???????🙅

karmannghia60 ·

I am with you on this one Adam (ie move it closer or to a different date) but the 356 Registry asking?? Very strange. I used to be the Secertary of the Registry before I left Melb and I was heavily involed in the Parade organisation. No way they would have VWs in the same park. Even 911s are debated every year whether they should have them or not. Who from the Registry has asked? If a member, that doesn't mean the committee view. I knwo all the committee members and you will STRUGGLE big time to even get close. Not good I know, but its a fact.
Cheers

Menangler ·

2 Years ago when driving back fro the Day of The VW we were flaged down by a group of Porsche 356 drivers heading back to Sydney on the freeway 2 hours from Melbourne, one of the cars had shredded a fan belt and no one had a spare, we stopped and tried a VW belt to no avail, They were great people and were interested in seeing our VW's, they had stories to tell about their 1st Beelte's etc etc while we waited for another Porsche to cruise past, that might have a spare belt.

While we were there, at least 2-3 more 356's cruised right past after we tried to wave them down, they gave a wave and noses in the air kept going!!!. finally one stopped and had a spare belt.
I am sure VW drivers would never do that.

So I am sure some 356 owners would like to share the park with the VW crowd.

empi ·

Well lets stop talking about it and do it. Raf i was approached by the president and another high up member of the 356 register about this, and i know the porsche people would want to seperate the 356 from the veedubs but that is no reason not to have the shows in the same more central place and then everyone will be happy .... logical.

mscabrio ·

It doesn't matter where it is it will never please everyone.

65busser ·

The fact that every year for as long as I can remember the two events have been on the same day, and as far away from each other as possible??? Can this mean there's a CONSPIRACY????? Now I think we're on to something.!!!

empi ·

it true

SPRINTSTAR ·

So far, there's about 8 really nice cars I know of that won't be going due to the new location...what's scarier is where to next? It is always easier to whinge but I'm sure there's a lot more important factors to consider if I was an organizer for the event.

[ Edited on 13-7-2006 by SPRINTSTAR ]

VWFOOL ·

it wouldve been good to catch both shows wen we visited DOVW last year, we got caught up in a huge convoy of 356s on the way into melbourne and they seemed like nice ppl, asking about our bugs and talking about their first VWs b4 they moved onto 356s. would be great to see some of those rides close up, nothing like having 20 schmick 356s roar past you on the freeway.

Hertz ·

I caught the 356 guys out on a run on the saturday before Dovw and got heaps of waves from them. I think its a great idea, and also think the Karman club should be involved too, its all good German heritage.

GASBNR ·

Its fair to the say The Karmann Club of Vic, always attend the DOVW in numbers, but last year it clatched with an Invite to FED square in the City, and at that time DOVW was going to be on the Earlier weekend.

They have there National day in FEB 07, then it won't affect either event!!!!!!!! LOL

blutopless2 ·

has anyone actually spoken to the VW club committee members about it?

i would assume that coz its a large event you would have to get these ideas in right at the start of the planning stage.
i'm sure all suggestions would be welcomed.

65busser ·

Who's coming to the Club meeting on Tuesday night? We can get it straight from the horses mouth.

empi ·

I will if we can do something about it.

blutopless2 ·

i doubt you will do something about it this year but at least they will know for next year.

or you will know why it hasn't happened in the past etc..

[ Edited on 14-7-06 by blutopless2 ]

empi ·

Dont want excuses just a reason... and if that reason aint good...

blutopless2 ·

yep and im sure they'll give you a reason.
has it ever been brought up before though?

aggri1 ·

Mmmm, Cranbourne, one of the three corners of the Eastern Bogan Triangle.
We'll have to be careful of the lowered commodores with home made spoilers being driven with loud barnsey music and no fear stickers, if ya know what I mean. Hehe, I've only met friendly people in Cranbourne of course, they just have an ueber-bogan reputation.
Lets see what the racecourse is like hey?
(This thread is so early, I've even got time to grow a top mullet mate)!

Hertz ·

I love those totana lights, i thought they were cool.

Mr Bubble Head ·

Aldo I thought you said you liked my torana tailights on my oval maybe you mean just on later big window cars ? I recon its a shame theres not as many cars runnig around anymore with them, there much safer than the oval taillights and I get indicators too:thumb

quazi ·

But I think we are entering a new era ,.....when torana lights are out .....
and the y2k beetle tailights will take there place.

Now theres something to look forward to!

We could always call ourselves the Wagensville rejects ?

ren ·

Like you've mentioned (adam), I think it would be great to have small monthly or bimonthly meetings at various car washes/car parks/parks etc etc...where peops can rock up for an hour or 2 or 3, and check out how each others rides are coming along and what not. A bit of part swapping could be part of it, and coffee could flow freely! Some could be during the day on a Sunday, and some could be on a midweek night, with a cruise thrown in for shits 'n giggles. (PS my vote is for monthly!)

Disclaimer - All ideas above are those of El Presidente Empi.👍 and strongly supported by the Ren/Ruckus household.

^ I like it

oldspeed any other ideas??

PHAT BUG ·

If people want something different, why not join the Volks club of Bendigo, were only an hour and a bit up the road and we have monthly cruises, monthly meetings, seasonal social nights, weekends away plus more!

empi ·

How about " Achtung!!"

jenz58 ·

...I've come in here a bit late...but for what it's worth

The club is always very mindful of the club members feedback....

The clashing of event days is always an ongoing issue it seems, I've only been fully aware of it over the last couple of years. The VW Club of Viic is more than happy for the 356's to have an area of whatever grounds we use so that the events are in the same place

We had outgrown Yarra Glen as wonderful as it was there. Last year was very hard on the judges as all Types were intermingled, and cars in the same category may have been on opposite sides of the grounds. The condition of the grass areas is always a concern considering Melbournes unpredictable weather

A large undercover area for the traders is a must

VW Club of Vic committee members went to several venues to check out facilities, suitability and cost. Cranbourne came out on top...Flemington was out well of the clubs price range as they are not wanting to spend all of the clubs money on the one event, and Cranboure actually worked out cheaper.

There will be plenty of room to line cars of in their Type and category which will make juding so much easier

There will still be lawn areas for people to picnic and relax during the day

Facilities are all there and plenty of undercover areas

It actually works out cost efective to hire these type of grounds than hire marques, toilets, tables and chairs etc as we have done in the past

The clubs books are open and all is there for members to see where their money goes, and members are always able to ask if in doubt

The club has given a lot back to it's members, providing food at events at Kennet River, Picnic at Hanging Rock and several other events. There has also been General Meeting Nights were the club has put on coffee and biscuits at the RACV rooms for members

The Day of VW is fast approaching again...so please if you have any questions come along to the meeings and ask them. When opened a discussion on this topic after the last DOVW for members to have their say

65busser ·

The Club organises heaps of events and cruises throughout the year and deserves to be congratulated. I reckon they do a ripper job and I'm sure Cranbourne will be brilliant. I just can't see why DOVW falls on the same day as the 356 Registers event each year. Is it just coincidence?

[ Edited on 26-7-2006 by 65busser ]

jenz58 ·

I don't exactly know how it all happened and who started their event first...it seems a longish history.

The club did look at inner city venues but they were either not suitable for the size the DOVW has grown too or just too expensive..

The club has found it is so much better to have proper facilities and sheltered areas and at a reasonable price. The accommodation prices are more reasonable on the edge of town as well for the country and interstate visitors who come, and better for getting cars ready at than inner city accommadation places

Hopefully it will work out OK at Cranbounre...I know they are not wanting to loose the great relaxed, family friendly atmosphere that we had at Yarra Glen

PHAT BUG ·

How bout a rat look catagory this year?
The style has got a huge following and I really think it is a must.

jenz58 ·

... I know they were talking about different categories this year to clear up grey areas...write a letter to the club and ask...maybe if someone familiar with rats could set criteria and judge them...and there may be a sponsor interested in donating a trophy?

You can email club committee members via the club website...but get something decent together so that it sounds geniune and a serious request from a group of like minded dubbers

I love rats and a lot of you do have sweet ones out there

Hertz ·

Rat class is a must, its getting too big not to recognise it. Its a whole lifestyle choice the world over, so as a progressive club, it should be high on the list of new catagories, otherwise people will just stray into other groups, and away from the Vic Club. That said, at the recent Eltham concourse, the reception towards our "rat" cars was very welcoming, and I felt that the club truly put on a great little event, despite the small numbers and bad weather. If the rat scene is embraced by the club, I'm sure the members would be surprised by how many new names they see on their membership list, and also the friendly laidback helping nature of those involved in the rat scene aroud Melbourne. My 2 cents.

62deluxe ·

A rat catagory would be great. Gonna be tricky to judge though. Everyone defines a rat differently...

65busser ·

Maybe for a bit of audience participation you "peoples choice" it.

blutopless2 ·

i agree... definitely a need to recognise the rat category.

*did* ·

i am a member of the vw club of vic and i am in support of the club events that occur throughout the year.

in the uk and us there are a huge number of car clubs, many localised clubs with regular 'gatherings' and less formal events. i for one would love to have such a thing here and through my discussions with other keen veedubbers, it seems that many would like to be members of both the victorian club, and a local club for gatherings.

local gatherings could be organised through the vwcv but there would have to be a number of regions or something like that so that people can have their own gatherings and not just club events rotating locations. localised events already happen as part of peoples free-will and friendship groups. putting it under a name would help to put it out there as something for everyone to be a part of and not just friendship circles.

in regards to day of the vw, it is a great event and i have no issues with the location. there seems to be some sort of history with the 356 club that causes their dates to clash with dovw every year. whatever the issue is, resolving it would be for the benefit of both clubs.

now, we all know that the vwcv is run by volunteers who put in a lot of hard work. so i'm not saying 'this is just not good enough' or anything like that, just stating the issue.

this is just my constructive feedback. if no-one gave feedback (and that includes the members of the committee) then the club would go no-where.
that said, we all appreciate everyone who puts in the time to keep the club moving forwards and i look forward to one day having the time to lend a hand too.

jenz58 ·

It would be great if VWCV members particularly the younger ones gave some input as to what type of monthly events they would like so we do have a mix of cruises and events...even if you can't make it to meetings email the social secretary who would put all of the ideas to the commitee or even run with it straight away if there was nothing else planned and it sounds a goer...and if there is time to let people know about it via the newsletter and website

We know not everyone is into lunches or dinners, or are not able to make the trips that mean planning time off of work over a few days...your feedback is valuable but once you have said you would like a particular cruise or event we would also like you to show up

The committee is happy for anyone who can't commit to a committee position, to come along when they can to committee meetings and run with something that interests them and others of like minds, or to help with the planning of a cruise...it is always good to have new blood with fresh ideas...just let them know if you are interested

There is a cruise being planned for September to Eildon where it is BYO food/BBQ and drink ... it will be pretty relaxed and a nice long cruise...if peple are wanting something shorter or close into the city, and you'd show, then please let us know

...and as it has been mentioned, there is nothing stopping anyone organising your own cruise via AUSSIEVEEDUBBERS .... plenty of people have done it and it's an excellent way to meet up ... people just have to be mindful that it is just a group of friends driving and you are not covered by insurance as a group event should anything happen

Yes if you here of another club running an event and it sounds good go for it...that's what keeps dubbing alive ... plus you make new contacts and friends ... all good stuff ... there's no monopoly on any of this so go for it

farkengruven ·

define a rat.
Is an artificaly aged car a real rat?
Not trying to be a smart arse....just trying understand the rat concept.
Should a rat have original old duco, or should it be sprayed with rattle cans?

jnr356 ·

i am putting my hand up and will sponsor
a rat trophy at dovw

and that is why rats are so good because there are no rules and new idears pop up for them every day and can be built 2 any budget:thumb it must b a class :thumb

jenz58 ·

jnr let the committee know...that would be fantastic!! Run it by the committee via paulkinsey@optusnet.com.au he is the president and will bring it up it at our next meeting...or I can while I'm still there jenlittlechild@optushome.com.au

So who will go judge of this category? All you rats fans will have to get your heads together and decide what you are looking for. If you are wanting a Rat Class at shows then we need guidelines to work with and to build on in the future

The DOVW is getting very close so really get those heads together and put something up to the committee

jenz58 ·

p.s. PHAT BUG it sounds a great day...pity I have other things happening 😂

Yes there will be a club cruise to Castlemaine that day which includes a train ride to Maldon for those who want to do it, but there is no stopping anyone joining our cruise to Castelmaine only and moving on to Bendigo

We will meet at the Mobil Service Centre on the Western Ring Road, Nth bound, at 8.45am for a 9.15am departure 👍

Hertz ·

As Cam said, its not about the cash you spend on them. Its not what you roll, its how you roll it. If you turn up with a car painted with a roller and house paint, you might not get a second look, but if its on a 7 inch air beam, on OG sprints, scraping the pan on the gravel then it just picked up my vote for best rat. And by the way, whats wrong with a rattle can finish. Theres no rattle without rat, it just becomes tle.

65busser ·

Rat judging has to be down to the public doesn't it? It's an artform and no one or two or three people can decide what's best. It's up to the individual as to what they like. Condition is relatively simple to judge (with respect).
Has to be peoples choice surely. Bit of fun too!

Hertz ·

Peoples choice for sure Brad, its totally fair, and as you say, its fun seeing peoples reaction to rat cars. Some people get it some dont, but if you lined up 10 or 20, everyone could pick a favorite, even if they dont know a thing about the rat movement or VWs , they still have taste, good or bad.

joseph ·

Good responses jenz58.
I don't understand the bitching. VWCV meets monthly, there are good reports about welcome and interest experienced at club events, and your responses evidence that committee members are open to feedback and suggestions.
