I was thinking this morning about a car I let pass through my hands a few years ago.

Was a original black 56-57 for sale in Castlecrag around 1988. Rust free - also came with the 3 guage cluster in place of the speaker vent. Interior was pretty good - it just needed a wash really, and perhaps an engine cleanup. I passed on it, and wish I'd picked it up. Did anyone on here every pick up a black oval from that way?

Anything else that people wished they'd bought but let it go??

My Mums Grandma style Madza RX-3 Savannah Coupe. They are rare as and it would be worth a fortune. She wouldn't sell it to me when I was 16, scared I would kill myself before I was 17. Also had a VG Mexicana coupe (long rear pillars) when I was really young to tow the boat with. Sold it for 400 bucks. It was a 770. It would also be worth huge dollars now. They only made a limited run. Dont know where either f them are now.

The list is long....Toranas, GTs, VWs etc etc but I now have at least one car I've aspired to owning for 15 years!

My uncle's Morgan +8 after he died.

Think I'll regret not picking that up for ever!

When I was 22, after a year working I found a 1985 Audi Quattro Turbo coupe (production version of the group B rally car) in QLD for $19,000. Would have to be one of less than 10 in Australia, and just coincidentally one of my favourite ever cars.

Didnt get serious with it though as I never had the balls to buy it ..... ended up with a Liberty RS tubro wagon instead.

In the early 1980s, in Canberra, I tried to buy a 51,000 mile FJ Holden, two tone green, smelled like a new car, the doors went klunk, full service history etc. It was part of the estate of a old lady down the road, who willed it to her granddaughter, who didn't want it. When it did hit the market I had already bought a 1962 Fiat 2300S, from down the same road, but that is another story.

The one I really regret not buying is a 1930s Jaguar SS saloon (not the SS100 sports car) in need of restoration, but a goer, for $200 in the 1960s.

A mate's story is he was offered a 1920s Cord for $50 (25 pounds) in the 1950s and refused it because he didn't know what it was.

Notch Nut ·

Before I got my notch on the road I nearly brought a 1959 Chevy w/ 460cui big block for $4500. I didn't know anything about cars in my teens (had the cash too!) when a mate told me the fuel consumption vs. my salary at the time. My response "yeah, but petrol is only 55cents per litre!".
Still, wish I brought it. Just to show the grand-kids.....way back when I was a youngster (in the days when a bananna only cost an arm and a leg!), we drove these things on petrol sucking down 8mpg!

G'day,
In 1969 I was offered a 356 Convertable without motor for $400 which at the time was 8 weeks pay, I couldn't afford it and a friend bought it, put a 1300 Beetle motor in it, registered it, drove it for a couple of months and sold it for $700, he kicks himself a lot harder than I do.
Empi, I was offered those as well but didn't have the $3000 at the time, ah well never mind.
Cheers, Ian.

Craig Paton ·

When I was 16 I was looking at a 356b convertable which just had a rebuilt engine and was is good nick. Just needed a little TLC. My mum wouldn't go G/tor for me, the car was bought for $3,500 and a short time later the guy sold it for $10g.

So now I have a '68 Beetle!

phatratpat ·

byronbus ·

Fireball xl5 ·

porsche 911 targa that was offered as a swap for my mini.

frank2112 ·

My folks had a Golden Anniversary 76 Ford LTD. Gold paint, Leather seats,351, power everything, Only 2 of them in Canberra at the time (and we knew the owner of the other one). They only made 500 of them originally. Offered them $3500 in 1984 and they wouldn't sell it to me. They traded it not long after for $2000 on a Honda.

Saw it a few years later with the front end rearranged and stripped of the running gear. Very sad.

Bizarre ·

this Ascort!

Dave has posted pics of it

I could have had it for............dunno, price of a unrestored 70's beetle.

I passed it up only 2 years ago

It was complete - in pieces.
Just needed putting back together. I didnt have the space

I have only seen one other and to call it a basket case would be kind.
I had been cut up to fit on a trailer to be glassed back together later. It was THAT bad.

But this..........:bounce

Oh well....... can onkly hope i get to see it one day

squizy ·

Fiat 130, $2000

The 70 beetle I just sold to David777, I almost bought in 1993 just after it had been restored. It came up again 8 yrs later. Thought about it all that time...

ColumBUS ·

the yellow type three square on here a while back. yellow, lowered on widened wheels with an 1835 running dual webers... went to buy it but had been sold the day before... i was a very unhappy chappy.

i love my columbus though... but i'll always love the squares

shaihulud ·

Oh! Yes!

Then there is the all original one owner (my dad) HT Holden Brougham with a 253 V8 in it. Dad also had VL Commodore. Whenever I visited Perth when I was living in Canberra back in the 1990s, I had a choice between the two and I always drove the Brougham.

I offered to buy it from him for about $3000 and he refused. About a week later he had a head on collision with a Mark 2 Jaguar and it was written off by the insurance company. A young man who works at the local service station bought it for $700 and has lovingly restored it. That's cool as he has done a very good job of it.

From dad's estate I inherited the Commodore. I was double de-chuffed at that.

amazeer ·

I wish I'd bought every block of land and every house that I've stopped to look at in my lifetime. The one I DID buy in 1997 for 110K is now valued at 260K. If wife had let me buy the others..... *sigh*

Starbug ·

the early model squareback that was down the road when i was living in west end... looked a bit worn inside, outside seemed pretty straight though a bit ratty (which is a good thing)...

and it had rivieras...

$1500...

im such an idiot.

stephenianjames ·

I remember about 12 or 13 yeards ago there was a guy in country Victoria (might have been Romsey or Kilmore..somewhere like that) who was producing replica's of genuine beetle convertable's, which included as per factory reinforcements, hood bows and soft top etc etc for about 5 grand. These bodyshells had any rust removed and repaired properly and were mint, and sold for about 5 grand or so.

I don't know what happened to this guy or his shells but damn I wish I bought one!

Someone else may remember these also?

Joel ·
