I bought a 1967 1300 deluxe and am planning to build up a budget streeter using the junk I have sitting around.
I don't care how bad it looks or how ruff it turns out, It is meant to be quick, cheap, and fun!
So if anyone has Ideas that would be cool, keeping in mind that want to use the crapp I already have.

other than needing to be on its guts with a cool engine up back.

How about leaving the suspension stock and just adding some 6" slicks.
This assumes the rest is in good condition, and aligned.
Also leaving the engine stock internals, but add some springs and some extra oil capacity.
And boost of course...lots of it!

Those chrome rostyles you guys got on the fatty square, dumped, and a turbo 1300 single port. Dont narrow it or anything, just throw on some adjusters, some meaty swaybars, and some decent shockers and torsion bars. Throw in a super diff and bolt a radio flyer to the roof, away we go!

Man I wouldn't do anything to that car that I couldn't undo, she looks real nice as is.I like the old style fenders w/ covered lights,to me were the best looking .I would pull the motor and trans, replace them with better parts(2110 turbo),and keep the originals as an assembly, from what I can tell, she looks pretty original, something I almost never see anymore, have fun with her, also I like the stock wheels, make a hell of a sleeper, imagine clicking off a 12 second pass against some v8,talk about jaw drop

stock height that's funny!
low is the way I like them.
I will put adjusters in the front and might just tubb it while I'm there. And I need to reinforce the rear horns so I may as well raise the engine and gearbox up too. The car is not that good so I don't feel guilty cutting it up. So guys don't stress I'm not wrecking a good car.

good job, very neat mods properly done. what happens to fuel tank to fit it back in?
Boostn ·
O.k Pete here goes.
Cut the tank up to fit the hole. It is also a good time to weld in a surge tank for the E.f.i pick up.
1/2'' pick up to the marine style filter(old school) and the tube is the return instead of running it into the top.
Next I will get that POR 15 tank cleaner and sealer kit for the inside protection of the welds and bare steel.

The tank mods is just time wasting and the POR 15 kit is $70.
It is true that even after a thorough clean you can still loose all your knuckle hair. The most important thing is to burn the vapours out properly before you start but make sure your not building a bomb because it is still a small container. A mate of mine does gas conversions a cuts the tanks up in vans and things like that so he showed me the way. If your not sure don't try it because you can damage your tank or even yourself.
I don't have any better pics of the bottom but it does have small holes at the bottom of the side plates so the fuel level is even, but slows in sloshing away from the pick up.

Hi Nick,
Now I know where the "art" comes from in Vollkommen Art.
I am so jealous of your fab skills.
What are you using to weld with?...as far as wire I mean, it is tig no?
Regards DB.
Boostn ·
Doug,
I have done the internal surge tank many times and many different ways because almost every car I do is either e.f.i or a tuff carbied car that needs good pick fuel up.
I found that it is much neater than an external tank, lines, pumps and all that crap. Plus in a bug space is an issue, so many times we need to either loose the spare or run the spare on the tank.

.6 wire in the mig and just mild steel rod for the tig.

I do not have any IDA's and you are correct about tuning carbies. I much prefer to tune e.f.i. The wiring is easy I have done heaps of Microtechs and found the easiest way is to make my own loom seeing as is for a VW and not a usual car. I am trying to stay away from turbo charging this one because it always get out of control and I find myself doing way too much work on bracing and gearboxes to handle the grunt. Remembering I want to keep it simple.
I could use my brothers 2632cc T4 with twin 45mm perfection injection throttle bodies, 244@50 and 50x40 ported heads but I need to make an exhaust system for it because he has it in a T3. It has been sitting around for about 7 years so he won't mind. The only problem is that I hate those exhaust ports and need to spend money on fresh valve springs and bends for the exhaust.
Boostn ·
The other option is a new 2387cc with ported 044s,Fk 10, 5.7'' h beam rods, pauter 1.4.1 rollers, cb thinline sump, mallory dissy and a comp of 9.8.1.The engine is complete less exhaust and throttle bodies, so I still need to spend money on it.
Boostn ·
The final engine I have sitting around is a complete 2233cc t4 60mm wheel , pauter 1.5.1 rollers, 5.6 h beam rods, street comp heads 46x42 valves(ported) draw through with a single throttle body and two staged 1700cc injectors. This engine drove very well and made 220 kw @ the wheels on 15psi on pump gas. The beauty of this engine is that you don't need an intercooler because it's draw through. Simple!

Some pics of the rear end taking shape
I used square tubing because round is always associated with race cars. So no round pipe or dzus fasteners, just square tube, bolts and nutserts. Plus I'm lazy and square is easier to work with.
The engine and gearbox mounts have been raised up 1.5''
This because I run swing axle gearboxes and the axles must be straight on launch. So if you want to lower the car, this is how you do it. If you raise the engine up any more, you must raise the torsion housing up too so you retain the rear end geometry.
This is my other 1967 1300 Deluxe that has been raised 3'' and tubbed 3''. This also requires to buy narrowed axles.

The ratios are stock for the street, welded 3+4 corse tooth gears and a super diff.
With about 180-200 kw@the wheels on pump gas it should be good for 12.10 even if it is lazy in the top end and does not 60 ft well. A fun streeter though!

I realllllly don't want to put a cage in it because I always do that and then one thing leads to another and in the end they are not so streetable. If the plan was to make big power and get it run a 10, I would definitely put a cage in for safety and strength like you said, but I think it's cool enough for a streeter.

Doug Sweetman wrote:Just a silly question..... why would you think it will be lazy in the top end with 180 - 200kw ? or do you just mean lazy compared to your race bug......
I can understand why it wouldnt 60ft as well, just curious about the top end thats all.
What I mean is that without the correct gearing it has not got enough power to pull through 4th over the quarter, crossing the line at about 5000rpm. It's all cool for the street but slower over the quarter. The correct 4th would improve the E.T. crossing the line at max rpm.
If you have a street set up in the rear end, it will not 60ft well with 200kw.The theory of VW's working well because of the weight over the rear wheels goes out the window the more power you have. It tends to start just blasting the tyres in every gear. So you need to set it up properly to handle the power or you will go slower over the quarter.

I have a GT2871R and hoping to run up to 18-20psi but do you think my heads will be able to flow this? I understand its all about breathing and I know I can force the air in there but will I be able to get it out with 37.5's? Do these heads get really hot on the street?
Keep up the good work!

OH I forgot, When you step up to bigger port sizes it raises the rev range (Comp Eliminators) does this happen with bigger valve sizes? I would think so but never tested it. I dont really want to rev the crap out of my car was hoping to top off at around 6000 and try to keep it together. Ever used a Haletch E6X... what do you think?
Thanks again,

Boostn ·
OK Heath,
You are correct in saying an engine is just a pump. the more it flows the more power it makes. One of the most important thing is efficiency. An efficient engine will make power and survive. For starters you always build an engine to suit the head, not the other way around. You need to know what your heads flow, so you can know what cam to choose, rockers, rods, springs and even crank to use. There is no point in having heads that flow well @650'' and using a cam that has a .400'' and 230 @ 50 duration. All you are doing is creating a boggy pig for no reason because that port has the flow moved up the scale. It would drive nicer, have better economy and make better power with a smaller head. Bigger is not always better. Valve size also changes the head characteristics. Sometimes if you are not happy with the intake Vs exhaust ratio, you can correct it through cam grind or even rocker ratio.
Boost psi is only a way of measuring air at the manifold. Power is about volume not psi. You can get what ever boost you want that is not the problem, but what does that mean when the engine is not moving it? When your engine starts moving more volume at less boost you need to go for a bigger turbo to cope with the volume.
For example, a rotary needs a massive turbo because the engines move so much air. If you could put same amount of volume of air though a VW engine it would probably equate to something like 80 psi, the fact is that the rotary can move the air and only register 25 psi at the manifold.( just an example). Each turbo has it's own chart on efficiency and what it's designed for.
Basically Heath flow your heads with the manifolds, select a cam, rods, and springs and find out what size roller you have.
The comps don't run hot on the street my heads run much cooler than stock heads.
Dave would be a good person to talk to about heads.
Hellcraps are a good computer but you need to do a fair bit of tuning.

Hey Nick.... Noticed you put a bit of effort into keeping the exhaust lengths close.... There are conflicting veiws on this in regards to turbo engines.... Have you created or witnessed any data to support this?.... I know most of your engine also run the turbo in the engine bay, how as this arrangement effected engine temps?.... The reason I ask this is because I use my cars in classic rally's and track days as well as daily and long distance driving, not to mention the odd trip down the quarter. So the idea of getting the turbo out of the engine bay has been playing on my mind.... Been thinking of fitting it up the 'Woolongong Way' and intercooling which is very similar to the WRX arrangement.... Have you guys ever attempted this arrangement?

If I do it on photobucket, can people save it?
I got it driving and have been tuning on the street with the laptop. It dives very nicely with plenty down low and spools up quickly because of the small turbo. EFI draw through feel very different to a carbie.

I took the junka out to Heatcote on Sunday.
It was very windy and I'm not a geek but a VW with no wing in the top end is crazy so I was restricted to just sort the rear end out.
But the meet was cancelled early after the Jap dude in the Jet car crashed.
Wow, It made us all feel sick and stunned.
I don't think I'll be getting back to the track in a hurry.
I got it all on video and it's not like a crash, it's more like the car disappeared and a bomb went.
It hurts when it's so close to home.

Good effort to get the car there and it's looking good.
After we had the chat about roll cages and then I saw the jet car dude, maybe with that power you should cage the bug. No wing at 130-135mph is crazy in a bug the way they flip over.
See you soon.

I don't think that too many people care about the old days, plus I would really have to do some looking for those pics(pre digital)
There is not much left of that car, I got carried away trying to improve it, It has a full chassis, 32'' ladder bars, wing, glass doors, glass front, plexi windows, alloy motor plates............... get the idea, carried away!
one day................
The black and blue pro streeter is waiting for a new gearbox. I had a bad miss in it which was traced back to the crank angle. It was making the computer think it was at max duty so opening the injectors wide open. This got worse after I put the bigger injectors in (obviously)
The crank angle is one of the first things I changed trying to find the problem, but the one I used was shitty too so it lead me on a wild goose chase. I have inboard footage of it going 11.06 @ 127 but it's missing ,I'm short shifting and pedaling it, not worth viewing.

Who estimated the power figure on that one?
I'm thinking about 170-180rwhp max no nos, and about 220-240 with nos. No intercooler and a 45mm side draft are pretty big limitations. I've used the same T3/to4e hybrid turbo on an SR20Det before running an intercooler and with a boost spike to 22psi it made 350rwhp at 7500 rpm, and thats with an intercooler, water spray and mappable ignition system.
Love the roll cage! I need one of those....

Can you make any sort of calculation of hp based on the time and final mph, using the weight of the vehicle and driver also?

Hi, Ian.
The 45mm side draft is not realy a big limitation as every cylinder sucks through 2 x 45mm throats (if you work out the area, it is much more than the compressor intake).
I have seen 350 HP with a 45mm Dellorto at 1.5 bar, without intercooler, but with h2o injection.
Oldschool is not that bad. If you have a look at some of the strongest drag beetles ever, they are almost all draw-through and no electronics exept mabe MSD ignition.
I have done 325 Kw (flywheel) with a 2000cc old school, at 2 bar boost.
Love that car and that wheely on street tyres.:thumb

Wow that's good for a laugh !!!!!!!
Thanks for the comments guys. That was 1997. It took a few years to get to the mag. These days with the Internet we can all laugh together. Love the old skool weber......ssssssssssso much easier these days with EFI.
Power was not the issue with the weber, the fuel would empty out of the bowl when you get close to the 115mph mark. Even with a holley blue with no reg just a malpassi and a 3mm needle valve it would empty. The way of fixing it was an alcohol valve and another fuel pump under the guard sucking out the over flowing fuel.
What a mess, but it worked very well. The alcohol enrichment was a washer bottle. Very simple but effective.
I should have persisted with it a little longer as I think it had a bit more in it.
BTW mixture meters were only for the rich guys back then, we just used a pyrometer in the ass and how good it felt.
Life is much easier now !

Hey guys,
I have been driving the junka around and have found that now that I am older it is pretty stupid. It bounces off the rev limiter at 8500 (easily) on 23psi. The roads run out very quickly even with 4 wheel discs. I moved the rev limiter up to 9000 rpm and the data logger says 8680 rpm. With street tyres it's pick a gear and fry them.
So I have been thinking that I might put a girlier cam in it and tame down the boost. I might also put a wank tacho and boost gauge in so I can try to keep an eye on things.
more later!

Where did you put your temp sensor to allow it to work better for warmup enrichment? I'd tried the sump but it takes too long for the 8 litres of oil m y 2332 had to come up to temperature. I then moved the sensor to the rocker cover where it will be spashed with warmer oil from the heads. That seemed to work better, but if the car was shutdown and then restarted within 5 minutes, you would see head temps around the 115-120 degree mark, because of head soak. Yes it was still mappable at that range though as it did need more fuel because of the heat to maintain a propper idle.
I know a guy in the US that runs a head and a sump sensor and has them wired together some how, and the ecu uses both through a single water temp sensor to sort out what to do with warm ups.
Anyway... i'd be interested to know your approach.
Cheers,
humpty ·
While researching my MS ECU purchase, I have seen some peeps on Shoptalk that run the temp sensor in the air flow under the head (sorta where the thermostat sits).... Granted, it sounds weird.... I asked the question, "Its a standard GM water temp sender right?".... But it seems to work for them....

Custom ground cams are a little out of my skill and price range... Sure glad you can do the R&D for us minnows!
dangerous ·
Over the years I have tried 15 different cam combos in my car.
As you said it is the journey not the destination.
Makes the job a whole lot easier when you can drop the sump and do it in the car though.(always dialed in)
In my old VW days, with mag case, I just removed the one side of the engine and went that way.
Yes I agree, every cam must be dialed in. I used a BIG Scat cam once (292@.050),
and had to install it one tooth advanced to get it in the right spot.
You can imagine how crappy it would have run if I just "lined up the dots"!
humpty ·
By "dialled in" I meant 'figuring out what works for the job'.... Not in the 'timing' sense but in the perfect combo sense.... You dig?..... But you guys knew that..... Its gentlemen like you two (and the Henry's, Michael's, etc...), who go the extra step with your projects, that makes it EZR for all of us 'normal' dubbers to make the right decisions in our build ups....
Keep it up....

Check out the inboard footage, it's not that bad inside. I think it looks worse than what it is. Waynes signature represents Australias fastest STREET REGISTED VW at the 2005 VW nationals , where it was undoubtably the fastest there . This represents an air-cooled VW that is engineer approved , street registed and street driven .

Hey Wayne,
Ignor all the crap, I would rather work together and improve the VW scene in AUS. I love what you do keep it up. We will catch up soon.
My Pro streeter is the other car (black one) and that has a raised rear end but still retains spring plates and torsions and shocks. NO ladder bars.
But this white junka is stock street registered and I have not engineered it yet but is not a problem in Victoria.

I have the same attitude as you Nick , those who dont consider our modified beetles as streeters are the narrow-minded bunch of people that we have to encourage to get off their arses and support the Australian VW drag scene , not knock it , and we have to keep on doing what we are doing now because we enjoy it so much !!

Who's knocking it?... Not me... I think both of you guys are a total credit to the VW scene in general and the Fast VW Street Car scene in particular... It is guys like you two (and others like you) that give peeps like me the imputus to build tough streetcars.... Dave Butler knows where Im coming from, we've spoken of this before.... I don't knock.... Its all about credit where its due.... And you guys are there in spades.... Wayne has built himself a rocket and Nick has done it too.... Both are very different machines, doing incredible things.... Major cudos to you both.... And to fill you in on whats is in the works.... My last car was quick, but my current project will have the potential to pull seriously good numbers.... I have never had a pauter rocker fail.
I shift this thing as 8600 and the only time I have had a problem is when the lock nut on the cup adjuster came loose and the push rod fell off. My fault because I didn't hang off them like king kong.

Hey Humpty , these comments were not directed at you , but at the bunch of negative whingers that get on this forum and dont supply the positive imput that it needs . We just need to encourage them to explore the boundaries rather than sit on the centre-line and say that it cant be done , or shouldn't be done , etc . Your comments are always valid and reasonable mate .
Hope you get that rocket of your own up and running soon .

Thanks Nick and Wayne... I thought I had said something out of play.... Its not good when that happens and it happens way too easily on forums..... We have to be very clear about what is said at all times.....
And as for my drive line.... I have all the bits I need to finally build that long awaited stroker... Bugpack Pentroof case (bloody heavy they are!), 84mm Crank, 5.5" H-Beams, CB 044 Wedgies, CroMo this and that.... I wont bore you with the details... But it will be turbo'd, efi'd and intercooled.... And hopefully it will run!... Then of course we have the transaxle.... DB has been a huge help in researching that particular element of the car.... As yet I haven't made a purchase in that direction, but now that I have completed my studies, the income is imminent, and the purchase(s) will eventuate in good time... When it does happen, I will post the build up right on AVD.....

So, this brings me to my next question... Where do I source a set of lash caps to suit my heads with my fancy new 1.3:1 pauter rockers? Should I be getting anything special in this area... autocraft or something?
I'm using aircooled.net alloy pushrods, luba lifters and the heads have titanium retainers. I'm not looking to rev past about 7500 rpm.
Reub dude! I think with a set of slicks and a turbo upgrade to a GT28RS-350 or a small GT2871 and you'll be well into the 11's. You'll want to get that gearbox looked at first though.
Cheers,

Hey Nick , are you going to run your streeter at the SUMMER SLAM 2007 at Heathcote Raceway on January 13th .
If you are let me know ASAP so that I can submit an entry and I will bring the oval down to have a run .
Imagine how awsome it would look if 2 street beetles could run side by side in the 10's ........... its possible I think .

How cool,
But I read it and it's a full ANDRA event.
Either we pull the turbo's off our cars or we start welding in cages.
Anything quicker than a 11.99 needs a cage.
10.99 and quicker minimum 6 point cage
but I havn't run tens anyway..........

I read the rules for street RWD and you only require a rollover hoop , 2 rear support stays and a side intrusion bar if you run between 10.00 and 10.99 and under 140mph . 11.00 and slower dont require any rollover protection other than an un-modified shell .
If we both run low 11's ( keep the boost down ) then the cars dont require any upgrade mods , other than radial tyres . No slicks and no conventionals .
You dont have to comply with weight rules for the class unless you want to set records .
You might not have run tens yet .........either have I.........but it wont be long for both of us I'm sure .

where abouts exactly is calder in relation to Melbourne ? Its a long way to go for a single evening of test and tune , but I will give it some thought . Fuel expenses , accomodation , meals , can be quite costly for just a few runs . We can do that type of racing up here at the WSID on a wednesday or friday night , and its only an hour away .
Are they going to make us put the car back onto the trailer when it runs below 11.00 ?
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hi Guys from QLD, don't let safety rules scare you from racing at Summer Slam .Ray Box runs the Jamboree , Compact Attack in nsw ,he is try to get a race series going for sport compact cars in Australia . He is also a volksy guy at heart !
Don't need tech until 10.99 or untill Andra says so for unrego cars ,same for roll cage-10.99 ,4point seat belts are very cheap.
There will be DYO classes and Allmotor as well for cars with carbs.
Check it out on summer slam post.

hey Nick , I went through the rules for STREET RWD category and it states , NO SLICKS / NO NYLON TYRES ........... RADIAL tyres only mate .
I am a little nervous running radials on my oval , however I think I will give it a go . Have been reading a few threads and it looks like 205/70 15 Bridgestone TA's are the go .
Anyone know of any cheap accomodation near Calder ? I still might make the effort to come down , depending on outcome from Summer Slam and finances permitting .

Are you still driving the car on the street much, or has it become too much of a handful to drive in traffic?
One of the dumbest things i ever did was try and drive my 2332 turbo down the esplanade on its maiden drive out. Brand new 4 puck clutch still not bedded in and wouldn't you guess it, i end up being followed by the police. Its was pretty tricky to get rolling without spinning the wheels. Stalled the car once too trying to take off too careully with too low rpm.

But seriously.... The Junka has a lovely note.... And the track commentator highlights what must have been an awesome ride....
I have never really seen any footage 'down the barrel' of a drag strip before Nicks few flicks (all have been along side the track) and I have noticed that the cars do seem to move around a lot.... I have done similar speeds (120mph) on the 'flying mile' at GinGin Airport in my old Bug and she sure was moving about!!!!.... Must take a huge amount of skill to keep it on the straight and narrow at those speeds, time and again in the quarter!!!.... Hats off to you Nick.

but like Dave, I like the build up, I would much prefer to have a driver that could drive it well and cut good lights but most importantly let me know what the car is doing. That is why I have the video, to study it afterwards. Maybe just one pass though.
BTW Dave, I would not just hand the car over if I didn't think you could handle it. It's a big ask to just jump into a foreign car and do a good pass......I hear ya!

Hey Wayne,
Once again sorry I couldn't get it happening 2 weeks ago so we could play.
from day one I have been trying new cam combos with this thing and it has always made the power but have had issues getting boost off the line. It is only a 2233cc and it is crucial to get it all right. I am getting there and feel that it has a bit more in it with more playing around. The aim right now is to get the 60ft more towards the 1.40 mark. one tenth in the 60 ft is worth two tenths in the top end!
Warrick would be cool but I will see how work is going closer to the date.

I've been waiting about 10yrs for this to happen.
Your dedication and persistence has finally paid off.
You have put Melbourne on the map.
Just a little suggestion, how about a cage for safety's sake.
Nathan (Higgins) and I want to Heathcote a couple a weeks ago, and on the second run, at half track (113mph) he blew a cooler line. Needless to say the car spent the next 200+ meters snaking down the track and going past the finish line completely sidewards.
He was extremely lucky to miss the wall, but at the speeds you are both doing safety is of primary importance.
Sorry to sound like your mum, but watching something like this makes you think how quickly shit goes down.
On a brighter note I fixed his car, he changed his underpants and he ended up doing a PB of 9.6@144.

Hi Guys,
I booked the dyno because we had to do a few pules in Johns (stylin) bug because of some changes. So decided to take the junka down for another play seeing as I am waiting for my new bender to make a cage for it. Finally the old turbo gave up with heaps of end play in the shaft. That's what happens when you ask for too much out of a small turbo. But more importantly we found and ignition miss that has always bothered me. The crank angle has a small spasm at around 8000 rpm. If you watch the inboard footage of the 10.44, you can see the tacho fluctuate occasionally. In first gear it runs out of power like it's hitting a limiter. I will try to sort this problem out as I am loosing some HP. The car won't hit the track for quite a while so should have it all fixed by then.
dangerous ·
So is that an electrical or mechanical fault Nick? (the miss)
Are you using the dizzy to find that crank angle or do you have a crank trigger?
Boostn ·
It's a dissy 2/24 megnetic type.
so I'm not sure if the shaft is moving around at high rpm or if the magnetic charge goes crazy at that speed?
I might have to modify the pulley and go 1/12 off the crank.
does anyone make a chopper plate for a VW 1/12 ?

I know zero about EFI stuff Nick, but I know that "h" who gets on here form Europe,
uses a Cv joint(ABS) trigger from a Commodore with one tooth removed, and a sensor off a vectra.
He mounts the wheel behind the pulley.
is it legally registered with the displacement and turbo etc? just am curious as am wanting to go a similar way....

Thanks dude,
not sure on the rules in QLD, but in VIC no probs with engineering a turbo 2L.
Kadrons and an exhaust is not legal without an engineers certificate.
Hopefully I will have it ready for racing for Warwick and you will see that it is nothing special.

Hopefully I will have it ready for racing for Warwick and you will see that it is nothing special.
nothing special ? dont kid yourself Nick !! This car is a credit to you , and just how many street VW's have been capable of running 10's in the history of VW in Australia . In the past 50+ years , only 2 that I know of . Now thats pretty special mate .

That is just being silly from a crap car.
Plus I will have to do something about all that extra weight being added for safety.
10.80's..................
Boostn ·
Well I was planning on putting a cage in it and racing it a bit more, but was not planning on getting it ANDRA tech inspected because I still want to drive it on the street.
I was not aware that Warwick was an ANDRA track and I am cut that I cant come up to have some fun. I have not touched it now for a while until I work out what to do.
I am thinking of maybe canning it and getting back into my pro streeter that has a cage and all the safety stuff done to it, so I can come to Warwick.
What do you guys think?
Dave, Wayne, Adam.........anyone?
dangerous ·
Go for it man!
Anything you need for it?
Dak-A-Tak ·
Tech isn't that scary to do and get when it's your butt or
safety issue's.To go that fast even on the street, safety
must be part of it.
There is lots of cars in vic with drag racing tech and going faster than yours that are driving
around on street.
I wouldn't race any car or at track that
lets 10sec quicker car out to race.!!!!with out tech! think about it !!(life)
Please don't get me wrong but you new this car will go fast.( power, weight of car ).I think you need to decide on
what you want! race car or street car.
You could race at warwick with no tech (was a few last year ) but safety first (yours)
I would like to see you there but in a safe car.
[ Edited on 7-4-2007 by Dak-A-Tak ]
OwenMM ·
Is the issue the fact that andra does not allow a bolt in door bar for 10.99 and quicker and Vic roads wont engineer a welded one? Have heard thats the issue in NSW.
Andra tech inspections are a joke anyway, A certain top fueler was and probably still is going down the track with front tires that have perish cracks going right around the sidewalls.....
Boostn ·
Yep exactly my point
This is fast street car and I don't want to start adding bars and ANDRA stuff.
If I do that I will have issues with Vic roads. The only way around it is to get it engineered.
BUT It would be easier to engineer my black one. The only diff is that the rear end has been raised and tubbed, but the rest is all stock. So I guess what I am saying is that I am over the Junka.........
dangerous ·
Boostn wrote:So I guess what I am saying is that I am over the Junka.........
Noooo!
xornge666x ·
I think Vic Roads and the TOG Police would have a few more issues than side intrusion bars with that car!!
Its street legal until they see it on the road dude... Ive been put off the road for WAY less.
It sucks, but thats the Vic road laws...
Looking forward to getting my car here in the US so none of those issues!!
Boostn ·
Yes you are right but I can engineer the car and as long as it still is road worthy the togys can't touch me. I have done heaps of customer cars this way where they are radical and still legal in Vic. Just not sure if it is worth it with this car.
2443TT ·
Hey Nick who does your camshafts? And would you share the specs of the two cams you've tried in your 2233 turbo engine?
I'm guessing around 278 at 0.050" with a 114 lobe seperation.
I'm about to start putting my new engine together and want power to peak around 7500-8000 RPM.
Cheers,

It so is worth it Nick.... This car (and your efforts!!) are an inspiration to many of us here.... The development of this car, whilst keeping the concept pure, is what makes this car so unique.... You simply must keep the furture development of this car alive.... Its a ground breaking Aussie built rocket that simply must continue!
There.... I said it.... Now go and 'take out' some superbikes damn it!
Boostn ·
Thanks Humpty for the positive words, but i think you are over doing it slightly.
The car was a joke from the start and I ( and plenty of others) have done a lot more and better work on better cars. My other 67 is a much better car but also a fair bit heavier. Why is the junka the fastest? Maybe because it was just slapped together to have fun with and it got out there. Basically it was fun but by continuing development means a full cage and more for ANDRA tech. Now it is getting serious and missing the point.
Boostn ·
After sitting for a while not knowing what to do, I have decided to prep it for thr VW drag day at Heathcote.
I have fitted a 1.00 4th gear (thanks DB), installed a launch control MSD, popped the guards out a little more to fit a 26/8 MT. Last time I fitted The t66 and turned the boost down and it made more power that the T4 that went 10's. On less boost it blasted the 6'' slicks stupidly, so I might not have a good VW drag day but it will have to do!!! The more power I put into it the more it twists the car up and I am constantly casing my tail.
humpty ·
Well Nick... Im sure most will agree with me on this.... While you say "The car was a joke from the start and I ( and plenty of others) have done a lot more and better work on better cars", the single thing that has taken everyones imagination is the fact that its not a purpose built racecar... Its a ROADCAR, that goes like a RACECAR!!! We all know that the efforts that you and your brother have put into many cars over the years, defines your business and your approach, this car takes it all to completely new level... You have proved, as others have, that a 'simple' (and I use this word advisibly!!) concept and thorough execution can yeld mind blowing results.... Where people like Dave Butler, Henry Spicak, Rod Penrose, Pete Page, etc have done phenominal things on the track with purpose built rockets, its guys like you, with cars like this, that make for real world relevance with maximum impact.
Plus I must say, that I prefer the look of your car to!!!! I know Im not alone in this view.... Thats possibly why this particular car has grabbed our collective attention....

humpty ·
Top work Nick..... Thanks a heap for the flik.... Now I wish I could save it to my HD...
hypo-vw ·
Hey Nick , great to see the Junka out on the track again mate . From the incar footage I am very impressed at just how stable your bug is at 130mph , as this was very evident by the lack of corrections being placed on the steering wheel in the braking area . My oval danced across both lanes in the braking area last time I ran it on the quarter .
It is also great to see the new cage has been fitted . I have just fitted a cage to the oval and find the launch from the start line to be much straighter and with little twist in the body . I am going to take the oval to WSID in a few weeks time for its first run down the quarter with the new cage and wing . Will let you know how it goes mate .
Really wished that you could have made it to Warrick this year , it was a blast !! Hope to see you there next year .

It has had one freshen up in ten years. The only thing needed was a new set of 044's, the old ones were a bit sad and we switched from a side draft 45 W to efi.
It has gone through a few gearboxes and clutch combos but has been VERY reliable.

Very inovative using a single injector. I always wondered how well that would work. I was going to do a simular thing using a single 1500cc as a staged injector for a turbo'd v8 I was working on a while ago.
Does it have a rough idle at all? I figured getting the pulse width small enough to idle nicely and with a good AFR might have been an issue.

Let's see if I make it?

We didn't make it to Portland last year after a mad week of getting the car ready, but after looking at the axles it's probably better that we didn't make it.
Boostn ·
I am now improving the rear end with shorter stronger axles.
Getting the rear end ready for more power to go straighter.
The original CAR and rear end work was never meant to go so fast and never meant to get a roll cage in it. I am now going to do it properly and tie in the cage as part of the rear end. So instead of starting another car I cut a lot of the work out to start again.
I am also going to change the engine combo so it should be good with a bit more juice!

Mark [A 1200 is slow] just made my new gearbox mount.
It still needs to be folded at the edges for that box strength.
Bolts up to the bottom horns and to the new 4130 top horns boxing that section up like I had done last time, but it's tied to the cage this time.
Thanks Mark it fits perfectly and is awesome quality.

Well after all that work to get the car to Portland it was an awesome weekend. It was good to catch up with everyone again and I have already started improvements on the car now to get it all done for Warwick.
I am happy with the rear end as it went straight as an arrow, but being the first time out we spent Saturday sorting out the launch with out bogging on a VERY sticky Portland track. I am not familiar with such a good track so we were struggling at the start. Also I still have a slight miss in the top end after changing a few things on the car. The miss is the reason I pulled out of Warwick 2008. I am now changing the hole intake system over to blow through and a water cooler like in Marks green slime.
On Sunday I think I shifted a bit too aggressively that moved the shift fork between 1st and 2nd ending my weekend.
(driver error)
The car felt so good that it felt really slooooww and was 3 tenths and 4 mph slower than it has gone.
So the best of the weekend for the first time out was a
1.83 60ft
7,05 et
100.22 mph
Boostn ·
And a quick thanks to Dave B, Rod P and Mike K for all offering to help get the car back to racing on Sunday.

Hey Michael,
When were you thinking of going for a pass?
I am doing more R&D with my thing so I am about a month or so off.
The test mule 1835 is going in for a dyno session or five and if it survives I might run it for a laugh.
Boostn ·
Thanks guys for the positive comments!!
Cam the stig can drive.......

Nick
Iam easy mate, I haven't done much to the car since Portland except a bit of lightening. Test&Tunes are on 10th and 24th of May and the 7th and 21st of June but I'm dying to have a run on the 1/4 mile. I might head up on the 10th so let me know if you want to go, that goes for all other interested punters you are welcome to join me as Heathcote is a great place to race and they love the volkies
Michael
sauron ·
Sorry just realised the 10th is Mothers day, that might be pushing my luck a bit if I go racing 😂
Michael
Stanley ·
But, what a great mothers day present. Free entry to the drags....😁

You got style Andrew!
Boostn ·
No good for me MC,
best was an 11.2 @124 mph
I popped it out of 1st gear just after a 1.57 60ft and them put it into second slowly pulling through the gear building up speed again. I'm not sure why I pulled on the stick just shit driving I think......
The turbo feed line burst in the top end spraying oil on the header system crating a cool smoke cloud.
Boostn ·
Seeing as Mark's car has run a 10 with more in it, it's time to pull my finger out and step it up a notch.
I will finally switching to blow through that I have been talking about for a while. The set up will be all new for Warwick so should be fun to test out on the 1/8th first.
This is the new tank before I weld it together.
Boostn ·
This is how I will set it up.
Stanley ·
Good stuff Nick
A 1200 is slow ·
Looks good Nick.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Very Nice mate. good work!!
sauron ·
Nick
those bends are cool, what thickness aluminium are you using?. I am building an air box for the carbies at the moment, I am using 1.6mm sheet, do you think it will weld ok?. How did you cut out the holes? forgive all the question. MC
Boostn ·
Hey MC,
I give Mark cardboard templates and get the good stuff back. A million dollar machine punches it all out perfectly. Pretty awesome to watch.
It is all done in 3mm because anything thinner is hard to weld.
Boostn ·
Check out how I partied on Saturday night.
colonel mustard ·
nice welds sir.
Boostn ·
Thank you !
westi ·
looks great, but were's the pic's of the other stuff your workin on,i can't wait to see the new set up.should be cool.
keep the pic's coming.

Holy crap Nick..... This thing is nuts!!!.... Interesting placement of the injectors..... And do you think you have enough of them? 😉 Looooonnnngggg runners too.... How do you think this will effect response?.... And what the hell is that TB off?.... And is that another squirter on top of the centre piece?.... And you said an intercooler was going into the mix this time too.... That box you built is the meth tank right?.... Or am I missing something? And, and, and......
matberry ·
Woo Hoo
Awesome work, some fun to come :-)
Stanley ·
good stuff Nick....keep those pics coming
chunks54 ·
Very, very nice work there.....
Boostn ·
Thanks guys!
Dynoed the new package today and all is ok for Warwick. The engine sounds good but with a few dyno issues we are not happy with the power. Should be cool for next week though. A few more things to go to finalise it before we cruise on up.
back to it.
Beetspeed ·
Very impressive set-up indeed!
So what fuel do you use?
(and what were those dyno numbers? 😎)
humpty ·
Damn.... And I thought my engine bay was crowded! 👍
reub ·
A 1200 is slow wrote:I like the stiffening job on the horns...Should work good, and looks neat too.
I bet you $100.00 you end up painting this car!
Just going back through this thread... Did Mark pay up?😂

was it nearly 300kw at the tyres?❗
reub ·
Did anyone have video footage of the really impressive burnout?
dangerous ·
There is good footage on the Warwick DVD,
but have not seen any on youtube.
reub ·
hmmm...still waiting on my dvd to be sent up from tassie...all in time 🙂
Boostn ·
Never seen it before?
Try again.
colonel mustard ·
ouch.

those input shafts are indestructable!
Well i thought they were until today
Does breaking one deserve a "well done"...?

Yep. Well done Nick.
Seen one before, V8 Off road racer in the eighties.

I think Vintage did one like that last year at portland from too much clutch.
Weddle Albins?)sell a 300M one now, that also is designed to twist a little.
Bear swears by them.
The other thing worth a look, is that many input shafts have some damage at that point of failure.
Usually from a past where the TO bearing shat one time.
Car sounded awesome n the vids dude!
hellbugged ·
Portland onboard.........looks like i'm getting first view
and now i've watched it........"BLOODY HELL!"
Boostn ·
Yeah, I spoke to Dave B after that last year asking him what clutch they had because they broke 2 bus boxes. I told him to speak to you and I think they have sorted it now?
I spoke to Ross F and Rod P and they were both puzzled.
I think it is a case of pre existing damage or just bad luck. I have used this one for years now and never broken one.
BUT the thing that amazes me is that I need more clutch because it was flaring with all the extra torque.
I will upload a inboard vid soon so you can hear it.
Dave I have lost your new e-mail address, send me one.

Jesus I was uploading as I was typing and you beat me to it !!!!
Bug_racer ·
Do you guys heat treat the shaft at all ?
hellbugged ·
oops........yeah was wondering about the clutch.....nice to see a decent burnout too!
Just read the entire thread again and then found a brand new vid as i finished....happy days!
thanx for the update on everything, always great to find out what the latest is from your stables!
Bug_racer ·
After reading the whole thread it was good to see your a hardcore racer from way back . I remember reading about your car in fast fours and making it in the top 20 fastest street 4's . Now thats quite an achievement !!
Im curious about your injection set up :
Why did you go with the single 1700cc injector set up ?
Why not go down the traditional quad injector set up ? Or even duals . I would have thought the atomisation at lower rpm levels wouldnt be too good .
Are you running wideband or narrowband ?
Do you have the turbo specs ?
Do you measure the Intake air temps ?
Pity you broke at Portland , your passes looked seriously quick when you ran . And your not afraid to burn some rubber 😂
vwfastback ·
Got to love that view of the shift light coming on during the burnout. Well done Nick on the mild pass to warm it up.....
coletrickle ·
Hey nick what a read should have done it way earlier absolutly fantastic,I could of got you to cut all that really nice fab work out a bit nicer it would have looked great in my bug!Instead of the scrap bin,but i know you'll say I've thrown away better😂Also i noticed in your orignal post you mentioned nitrous kits yet i see none? That being said how big do you want the stickers? The 2332 will be going back together in the next month or so depending if work keeps up so i can cam it and gap the rings for gas if you want?and a run to melbourne would bed every thing in nicely!prior to fitting gas😁P.S.what size t shirt do you wear getting some made i think you'd like.later dude
humpty ·
I seem to remember you speculate that the input shaft may have broken.... Man that's a tough break.... No pun intended.... Awesome vid Nick.... Lighting the tires in second and third by the looks of it.... Crazy stuff!
reub ·
Great vid dude... and wicked ride for sure😉
essex ·
Nick, these were spectacular burn outs & passes at Portland! Great to watch.
20bkombi ·
Slipping the chutch most of the track, and braking the input on another. Must have been its time.
(Good work)😀 Back when i had 354kw (475hp) 2002-2006, big skids, lots of runs, still never broken one.
Just bung another one in!!! How many could 1 person brake in a life time?

Hey Col ,
I have a turbo style kit, one fogger and a set of solenoids, one line, bottle and brackets. You will need foggers and the lines that run from the solenoids to the foggers. If you run a decent hit you will need another set of solenoids.
What's the tee? XL for me

Yep that's the go Aaron, I will not look into it too much because it shouldn't have happened. I will throw another one at it.

Love the article in VWMA too!
Here's to more volksie race cars.
westi ·
nick you know why it broke,it's so obvious.
it's to damn heavy.although there is lots of rust, there is way to much steel in that poor old girl.
it's time to call jenny buddy.
it was good to catch up with you guy''s ,hope to see you soon.

Hey Westi,
She is fat alright, I have been thinking of giving it the abbo treatment. The only problem then is where do you stop?
But I'm still loving Pete's package with Rod's engine. Nice and light and fast!! and the engine came out in 10 mins?
I have been thinking.................
maybe a new car, super light?????
It was cool catching up and hearing the goss.
Have you checked out Mike Moran's pass?
www.moranmotorsports.com
