does any one out there in dubb land know anything about fibre glass body kitted beetles? I've just bought a 1970 beetle ( my third ) and it looks like the back end is porsche 911 the front has square headlights but I think it is meant to look like a slant nose 930 if I'm not making much sense check out the attached photos

Thanks for the warning guys!!!
I actually drive the green soft soft thats my avator
this one came up at a cheap price and i have only ever seen one before so i grabbed it to play with :bounce
just trying to find out some history about it as it apparently belonged to a member of Western Australian VW Club
VWCOOL ·
As far as I know, this kit was made my a mob in Adelaide in the 1980s. They did a Poraga - yours - and a Porerra, which was a non-convertible kit with 'conventional' 911 nose and rear styling. The company also did a fakey Rolls Royce on a HZ Statesman/Kingswood
Hope this helps
sinecure ·
I actually like the Porerra and Poraga. There was a business on the Gold Coast where two (one of each) were parked for years while I was at school.
Nice looker yours, too.
N.B. deep breath, now I'm prepared for attacks and abuse
[ Edited on 20-8-2006 by sinecure ]
fenrayer ·
So far so good no abuse as of yet LOL
engine blew up an hour after i bought:cussing it lol explains the cheap price
in the process of putting a working engine into it and gonna give it a fresh lick of paint purple and black
I didn,t even know it was a poraga when i bought it i just liked the look of it so joining in here I have already learnt something new
PrettyBlueBug ·
It looks kinda cute in an ugly sort of way... 😂
It's different, and I'd love to see how it ends up! 😉
fenrayer ·
She lives again 😂
took hubby 5 hrs to change motors
next step rubbin her back LOL i mean sandin the paint off with a lot of elbow grease😀
does anyone know of anyone in WA who has a Poraga ?
pete wood ·
Well there you go, someone who's proud to own one. Good on ya, I wouldn't, but then who am I to talk. I too butchered a beetle to make my buggy.
As you're about to repaint it, can I make some suggestions?
The thing the poraga suffered from more than anything else was bad proportions. The porrera was even worse. There are some simple things you can do to help the situation.
No.1
I'd think very seriously about chopping the winscreen an inch or two and adding a straight top edge to it. Like Karmen convertables. This will sort some of the clash of lines out. You could also lower the rollbar to the appropriate height at the same time. This may also mean needing to lower the seat mounts.
No.2
The car would really benefit from some big wheels and low profile rubber. Poragas came with big fat guards and poxy steel powercoated rims. Why? What you want on there are some 16" and fat ones on the back. Then lower it a little more and it should look a lot better.
👍
Just my opinion though, do as you please. 😏
fenrayer ·
thanks for the advice pete
all the chopping is out of my areas of expertise as me and my hubby are doing the all the work ourselves , but the fatter wheels and bigger rims are on the plans LOL
cheers
Sharon
p.s love zak's colour
pete wood ·
ta. It's Ford Mulberry. Has a slight metalic glint in it too. You can buy touch up cans at the local Auto One. That's why I picked it. 👍
baybuscamperkid ·
i gotta say, that matt black looks better on it then anything i have seen!
fenrayer ·
ford mullberry is a cool colour when I first got my green bud it was orange and blue (yuk) so we painted it ford mullberry
pete wood ·
cool, i don't blame you for changing to green though. seems to suit the car better.
fenrayer ·
yeah it suits her thats why she called toula from fat pizza , she is loud short and bright
LOL but now she is my husbands car 🥲 he wants to call it Habib
yeah its the only porrera i have seen for sale , but still a little overpriced i think
crewcabconnection ·
stop it.
fenrayer ·
Stop what crewcabconnection!!!
fenrayer ·
any info at all concerning the history of poraga who started making them , how many were made etc ,, any info at all would be greatly appreciated THANKS IN ADVANCE
🙄
2slow ·
I remember going to a motor show of some description in the 80's and seeing both versions of this car and thinking it would be my dream car. I can tell you there were heaps of people going all over the two cars as well. Could well have been why I got into VW's in the first place. This was a trend and as with everything trends change but it's good to know there is still peole out there preserving a bit of Aussie VW history.
Good luck with it.
Bobby
fenrayer ·
thanks bobby
i have just enetered my poraga into a show,n shine revheads in narrogin but she isn,t ready yet still got to paint her and stuff , hopefully i wil get some interest and someone will know something there but doubtfull gonna be mostly V8,s and turbos lol , got a bit of competition there!!! but i bet mine will be the only vw LOL
cheers sharon
Have another look at the info on the car in this link. It appears he has the moulds as well. Might be a good contact to look for some history, maybe.
fenrayer ·
cheers sinecure did that this morning found out quite a bit even got sent a scanned pic of the original sales brochure for the porrera not quite a poraga but close
crewcabconnection ·
Tha hall of Fame, the 49er looks shmick...but I was crying with laughter too much to get to the bottom of the page...(kidding).

BUGBOY ·
I have to say i like this sort of stuff!
You don't see to much of it now days but time is money and not many people have both so you don't see these cool things being built.
I think the first vw i liked was a poraga back in the 80's.
fenrayer ·
the guy selling the porerra in the links in this page , kindly shared this with me so i thought i would share also

trying to add the last page lol

if ya check out the for sale section rexy is selling a a porrera no lights and irs but the floorpan is rusted , i was gonna buy it but transport was too much
you should check it out , otherwise mike is selling a licenced porerra and has porerra and poraga moulds for sale aswell
be a good buy
or by the time you've blown money adding porsche bits, details etc., repainted, got to doors to fit, new hood etc., then you could probably get one of these ...
Then you would have JUST another devalued Porsche with the wrong body on it.
Dont think 75's came with the fat bumper. Pretty sure they were later???
Done properly the Porgs did look ok/good
AND if the motor goes your not up for a $10k rebuild!
aussiebaja ·
i think the car looks great ,,,,,you dont see many off them anymore ,,,,,,,,paint a nice colour and give it a nice sound it'll be a real head turner
crewcabconnection ·
yep, plenty of mid 70's 911s got tarted up, especially in the early 90's due to the sky rocketing prices at the time ... and this is over priced...but 70s 911s are pretty cheap, personally I'd go for a 912...but that just me.
You have to do what you like at the end of the day, if it floats yer boat, buy it ... just be realistic about the resto costs, so you don't get a shock...
fenrayer ·
crewcabconnection wrote:or by the time you've blown money adding porsche bits, details etc., repainted, got to doors to fit, new hood etc., then you could probably get one of these ...
a few points I'd like to make ! you dont add any porsche parts at all just poraga or porrera. you use the original doors so making them fit is not an issue.
the Idea is to make an original car not an exact copy of a porsche and if you do it your self you end up with a car that is how you like it and mechanical repairs are just the same as the stock beetle. body is fibreglass so repairs there are also easy and cheap.
I guess if you don't get the idea of making something personal and fun (fun being the most important part if your not having fun why bother) you just don't get it ....sad really
Joel ·
ive seen a few with major rust problems
once the kit is on there is no way of seeing rust developing in the body underneath let alone having access to fix them
most of them would have been beach cars as well like 90% of vw convertbles which wouldnt help the situation

But thats what makes a good one worth more money.
It like all things we hated, roofracks, headlight stone grills, old kobis that drive shit, under powered beetle and to hard to see out of the back window, cheap fibre glass buggy etc etc .......................................
If you kept all that stuff you would be a rich man! LOL
koolkarmakombi ·
Creative Cars were an Adelaide mob in the early '80s. Did a ferarri out of a TA22 Celica, various porches, the owner bought a ultra rare 959 or something to base repro's on. Statesmans to Rollers, etc they made lots of moulds for those bedford van A-team mockups, spoilers, really really 'lightship' panels to turn sandman type hq on vans into buck rogers space wagons built to deflower tasty morsels of the day.
Was the local dream yard for many a schoolboy like me.
ppl used to have the cc logo drawn on their skoolbags- kind of like orange county shockers now.
aaah the memories!

Oh boy what a weekend , finally got my poraga into the shed and started stripping her down for respray , :cussing AHHH my hubby broke the windscreen , I guess toula my grren convertible is doomed to be a donar car 🙁(( as she has already given her heart ( motor to poraga ) and now she is about to give up her windscreen 😢😢

Cool car... Remember different is GOOD..
I'm currently thinking about painting my car as the 10K price tag is too much in my option. So I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out..
Can you please post when you have finished what produces you used to get the finish?
Was the fiberglass harder to paint then the steel bits etc..
Cheers

the paint does look pretty good in the pic , unfortunatly there are a few runs in the paint she needs to be sanded back a bit and another coat put on , then figuring out where to put the purple highlights lol
black is a horrible colour to paint with you really need a 100% perfect base

Love the primer on the wheels. She should come up a treat when finnished. Good luck

MISS VDUB ·
WA Day of the Volkswagen 2006
The WA DoVW this year will be held on Sunday the 3rd of December at G O Edwards Reserve in Burswood. That is where it was last year.
Entry will be off Hawthorn Place from Burswood Avenue. This may change. I'll keep you posted.
Entry will be from 9 a.m. The show will commence at 10 a.m. and finish at 3 p.m. Trophy awarding will start at 2 p.m. To be judged for an award your car must be there by 11 a.m.
Entry will be free to all people. Cars $5 each. Private swap and sell stalls $10. Business trade/display/selling $50.
The usual classification for trophies will be there.
There will be a new rat classification. Because of the controversial nature of the definition of a rat, a car will be in that classification if the owner says so.
As last year there will also be two classifications for buggies. On road/off road registered and off road only unregistered. Bring your off road racing buggy. It must be VW based or derived from VW.
See you there for another great day.
Ash x
fenrayer ·
ok cool sounds like a goer

hubby pulled apart my motor i thought it was a 1300 but then maybe a 1600 it turned out to be a 1641 after measuring the stroke and bore
explains why my bug left others 4 dead hehehe
fenrayer ·
eeeek
shattered a ring 😬
i guess it was on its way out anyhow , got sum new ones on order
and just found out i have a big bore kit in my motor
why cant a SIMPLE rebuild be just that 🙁
fenrayer ·
putting on a brand new shiney exhaust while i am at it 🙂👍
fenrayer ·
well my engine got pulled out and stripped down but its stalled on the rebuild , got the parts just , have to suck up to the ex :vader to get him to put it back together , maybe i can bribe him with sex and beer

fenrayer ·
Damm sex and beer didn,t work mota still in bits , :vader i,m losing my charm
ending up trading my 10stack cd player and dual subwoofers for him to put it back together , damm my ex drives a hard bargain LOL now just got to get him round here to do it 🙄
he promises it will be done by next weekend
Bizarre ·
He took a sound system over sex and beer??:alien
Strange guy 🤪
Pity your in WA 😀
fenrayer ·
well he been with me for the last 15 yrs may be i just aint worth a mota rebuild any more LOL
i,ve devalued with age LMAO
fenrayer ·
:bounce woohoo engine is back together after a few dramas
shattered one of the new rings , and had to use spacers in between the rings as i had ones that apparently not made any more
but yay she,s 2gether just gotta get it back in now
Sharon
fenrayer ·
Apparently beer and a roast dinner works , :P plus payment of the sound system 😁
fenrayer ·
okay well i am still waiting for my motor to go back in
promisies it will be done this weekend , but in the meantime i needed a car to drive cause my toyota tarago
decided it didn,t like me and engine got a combustion leak so i traded her in on this new beast

so wish me luck as i have major plans for my whole car

The porrera * factory * mold is in Perth ( hard roof one ) I know the guy that has it as well as the body sitting on his lawan thats for sale
fenrayer ·
what is he selling the mould for the porerra or a porerra body?
very interested in a porerra body , would love to have one of each
fenrayer ·
ok here are a few pics of my poraga as she is today, theres nothing really wrong with the way she looks but I am fussy and i dont stand out enough LOL
so this will be the last time anyone will see her looking like this , as she is going into the shed and being stripped , and rebuilt
stay tuned in a few months she will be a new car

Claudius ·
All I can say is.....
fenrayer ·
hmmm still nothing done to her , i have to move house owner is selling and i cant find a suitable house for under 250 a week so my baby will have to wait till i move , thinkin about changing her name from sway to borg or hybrid or junker lol any suggestions ??
Sharon
fenrayer ·
hmmm still havn,t moved , running out of time havn,t found a house , but........................... my bug got pushed out the shed today and hosed off ( very dusty ) and we bought some bolts to bolt in the engine , started raining lucky the roof was on her , so gonna have to wait till 2morrow to fit the ej16 into her 👍
at least its somethin LOL
fenrayer ·
just thought i would let you know a ej16 does not fit in a unmodified beetle engine bay
i am in the process of trying to put mine in and it needs some major cutting to fit
so i am rethinking my whole ej16 project ,i was expecting to cut a little !! but i dont know if i want to cut so much out of my engine bay ,
it may cause structural damage
Sharon
Sioux ·
i was told that an ej20/22 is quite an easy install. is there any specific difference between an ej16 and an ej20/22 that makes the 16 harder to install (different cooling configuration etc .... ) ?
fenrayer ·
no the ej16 is easier because its a little bit smaller , i am told the cooling outlets etc are the same , just need a throttle body invertor and custom made sump ,
still attempting my install 🙂
Sharon
fenrayer ·
ej 16 does fit I retract my previous statement.
just got to hit the enginebay a bit with a hammer.
