What sort of carbie is this?

If you read this post about "My Motors!"

I'm trying to figure out what kind of carbie is running on my 1600dp. Its something I've never seen on a stock VW before and its not actually working properly.

Here is a pic:

When the engine starts, it just roars. It doesn't idle. What can cause an engine to do this? And what is that muma of a carbie on my 1600?

Thanks

That appears to be a progressive weber or solex and is non standard as is the manifold.
They can be difficult to jet correctly but not impossible.
It should not "Roar", that is probably a fault, rather than a jetting issue.

VWCOOL ·

Yep, looks like a progressive Weber (32/36 DGV or DGAV with a water-operated choke 😂) off a Ford Cortina or something

Way too big for a 50bhp engine, IMO, but should be able to be made to work thanks to prgressive design and small-ish 32mm primary throat

Doug Sweetman ·

In my experience, the 32/36 DGAV is a great fit for a 1600 tp - it give you comparable fuel economy to stock whilst driving on the primary throat, and with a mechanical secondary, the advantage of more power when you need it.

It should run great as stock - if its giving you issues I'd strongly suggest putting a carby kit through it, change your points, check your timing etc do all the basic and simple things before starting to think jet sizes.... check for stuck throttle linkages too

Bizarre ·

Should be a 32/36 DGEV witk electric choke??

OK carb - great to learn jetting on. Can be made to work better than a solex. I wouldnt rush to get rid of it

No heat risers but should be an issue in Qld.

Sounds like something is jammed open.

Better build quality than Solex.

Have a look at

http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/Table_of_contents.htm

couple of good articles there on the Proggy

BTW
Looks like you have no support for it
You need to brace it as you dont have heat risers the manifold will spin in the ends.

have a look in the pic

My uncle seemed to think the problem was caused by a massive vaccum leak. What symptoms would a vaccum leak give?

Bizarre ·

yes - a vacuum leak will make the revs go up

Like when you shut the fuel off on a lawn mower, just before it stops it revs its head off.

Check the rubber joiners on the manifolds - they could be perished and cracked.
Easy fix.

Make sure everything else is done up tight and gaskets on carb are fine.

Bizarre ·

How are you running this??

just on the ground??

Get some hose and join up those air outlets on the shroud like in the pic above.

Rubber joins are good, nice and tight too. Its currently running out of the car on an engine stand, but for the next week its at my Uncle's place in Toowoomba, so I woun't be able to get to it.

He was a VW mechanic for some time so he should be able to sort it out.

Thanks for the help though.
