How do I hotwire a bay?

Yep... you read correctly... I want to hotwire a 1700 type 4 motor in a '72 bay. 😂

No, I don't intend on stealing one to add to the collection, it's just that this particular bay is an abandoned project that I can get my hands on fairly cheap but the catch is it needs a lot of work...

Being a half done project, the electrical system from the firewall forward is totally FUBAR!... both ignition barrels (yes.. there are two! :duh) are as good as useless, and I dont feel like fecking around with trying to work out somenbody's bodgy wiring just to see if the engine still runs! 👎

Pod briefly skipped over how to do it in a thead on BWM, but it didnt make too much sense to me... can anyone give me an idiot-proof and detailed account of precisely what i need to do to start this sucker (hopefully!)?? 😘

run a posetive wire from battery to posetive coil.Crawl under and bridge the starter so it turns over.If it's in gear you will get run over.Always easier with 2 people, one to work the throttle and the other as road kill.

Hi Michael,
Its a bit dangerous to start the engine under the car...
I jacked My car up to do it, first time I had it on the road
wondered why it was trying to get off the jack...
Turned out it was in gear... [auto lock out]
Lucky I'm still here... Lee

Yes,
as Micheal said, hook the + on the coil to the + on the battery..
that will get the ignition on... hopefully the fuel cutoff on the carby is connected to the coil...
then run a wire from the small terminal on the starter motor solenoid...
when You touch the other end of the wire on the + on the battery...
the starter motor should work...
and hopefully it will start OK...

I presume You don't want to use any switches to do this

Hence "ROADKILL" ...with a Kombi if yer not a phat bloke like myself you can actually lay lengthways from the back as a safety measure,so if it starts it only destroys the house in front of it ,but you won't get hurt, unless you're not the owner...common sence prevails with this one guys/girls unless you wanna be a "Darwin" award winner..:sandrine

Thanks lads... you guys rock! :kiss

Yeh Lee, no switches works for me... installing switches takes extra time heheheeh. 😂

thats what i meant ^^ on the BAYWINDOW MAFIA thread😏😏❗❗❗❓❓❓

i know batteries are right beside the motor in a kombi but in bug to save running a wire alway the way from under the seat just go from the B+ on the alternator to the coil 15 conection
this only works on bugs with alternators tho
in which case u'd have a steering lock to contend with aswell

are the wires from the ign switch still there?
u could just join the battery lead to the ign lead then touch the starter wire to it to kick it over

used to regularly loose my sbugs key LOL

Not on my '59, it has an alternator but no steering lock :P

That's a very handy tip, thanks!

Hi

If your car still has the VW diagnoses plug wired up you can then bridge the starter from there. #50 is the terminal for the starter solenoid and battery power is availble at terminal +

ah cool!... now that IS an interesting piece of 'fo! 😎

after only ever working on bugs with gennys i found out hard way when taking the air cleaner off when i first got my 74 home
rubber boot was missing off the B+ terminal and me not watching what i bumped the socket on

u work out the rest LOL

Now I know what the rubber boot is for Joel...:P:P

I was going to suggest the alternator + bolt
but it may not be even connected to the battery...
this Isn't a road going car...
it has two ignition switches ...
and neither work....

the other way is easiest and safest...

although standing behind a VW that starts off and goes down the street... is pretty Safe..?

leaning over the battery, while the VW goes down the street, isn't :P:P:P

Anyway,
Any Kombis gone missing yet ?? :P:P:P

rip out the wires that go into the ignition, then start touching them together, one by one.. thats the way to do it in a hurry.
