Gearbox bearing replacement question

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/55562/gearbox-bearing-replacement-question

VWCOOL ·

I have a good gearbox that was factory installed with a plastic cage in the larger of the two bearings that are visible with the nose-cone removed. I wish to replace the bearing with a better one. Can anyone tell me - for sure - if the bearing can be pulled (with a puller) off the shaft without disassembling the whole gearbox, after its circlip has been removed? This bearing appears to be a transition/sliding fit into the gearbox case but not sure about its fit onto the shaft

I take it you want to change the bearing because of the plastic cage ???

This isnt a reason to change the bearing if The cage is good dont F.. k with it you need to inspect the bearing race and balls for spalling or flaking to see if it needs repacing

from memory you will have to strip the box to remove

Take it to a mechanic Glen

most times that bearing will need replacment

Dave, I want to put it in my 1916 Oval to replace the 4.1 box thats in there now

I might pull it apart for a look-see next week

If you can find a puller that will fit between the balls to pull on the inner race,
you may be able to get the old one out.
The "fit" on the shaft should be tight, but only firm in the housing.
But fitting a new one will need some support on the other end of the input shaft and some way to get the circlip back on after the concave washer(if it has one).
I do all that in the press with the box half assembled....you could try, but sounds scarey...I'm sure it is possible.
